Science, industry, citizens and crafting public policy | Miriam Holladay Juckett | TEDxSanAntonio

[Music]
you hear about that student see
something on the news or franchisee
animal or maybe a public meeting so you
decide about that some information you
go in the Internet in the ground and you
might find something so you might go to
the website of the project
hello I am so excited to present to you
this new innovative amazing technology
that we are going to your community it
is safe it is reliable we’ve partnered
with the best scientists and engineers
across the country superior do this to
ensure that your community will be saved
unlike dirty fossil fuels this is carbon
free energy unlike solar and wind it’s
reliable all the time not just one
sunshine through wind blows and it can
give a whole out that space we’re
thrilled to bring in this nuclear power
plant
okay peer-reviewed science okay so let’s
look up some of the science so you get
on the internet for those websites and
you see okay a 300 megawatt Berlin’s
double blue below design grade the
seismic hazard structure to a 1 times 10
to the negative 7 probability of
exceedance and it shot a reduction in
the regulated by 10 vitória the type of
tool that it uses
so you might go to publicly and you can
regulate and they get up and they say
coop welcome to this public meeting
please the defeat regulatory agency are
going to make the decision about this
power plant based on a security is
pursuant to title 10 of the Code of
Federal Regulations parts of the Jew
according to such as one of three atomic
energy so what we do
so I’m a public meeting that’s coming up
residency and it’s someone from the
community I accept
because they are telling you why am I
telling you my radionuclide but what
does that mean it means radioactivity
did you know they’re telling you in the
States
carbon free but they’re not telling you
that it produces a toxic waste and
encrusting radioactive they couldn’t
tell you if you’re doing something will
kill you did you know that they’re
learning on place of quitting simply
sitting there on site for tens of
thousands of years and when they do so
now you’re at the point when you’re
hearing one of this maybe you identified
more with one group than the other but
nonetheless you have found yourself if
it’s very complicated intersection a
science society and government and
industry there is no nuclear power plant
being sited in San Antonio right now
how you feel about that
take a moment some of your rig disciples
some of you may be disappointed it’s
important but nonetheless maybe we don’t
have money coming to San Antonio right
now but we do make other decisions all
the time
Raven if you have to decide things like
in our minds whether or not each other
in the bigger picture they’re big
projects that happen like how we do our
cities and whether or not to sideline
these are things that come up we’re
going to come across these entities how
do we navigate them there’s three things
to try and keep in mind the first thing
is to try to separate that entity so
then the door there’s no nuclear power
Mike honey that’s a fact how you reacted
to that is your feeling and their
behaviors that feel a little bit
different about that because of your own
internal biases your own experiences
that you’ve already had so it’s
important to remember that just because
a fact makes you in a certain way
everyone else may not feel the same way
but that you have to separate them they
give you another there but we had a
excellent time earlier about our main
part how many of you in here are afraid
took July show gets nervous laughs this
is a
did you know that when she dealt with a
knight so now they’re just not going to
signal death attributed to a US
commercial airline accident at one and
then in 2016
[Music]
you’re totally find it funny that they
my numbers and the great thing about
that’s the great thing about objective
science it is true whether you believe
or not but it’s how you react to that so
that’s a worth keep in mind the facts a
family’s second thing understand that at
any given time you’re not hearing every
facet of the truth so I give you four
different sets of information
what’s because each party is going to
give you the information that they want
to hear what it is there’s to give so
you’re advocacy group right here
power plants provider they want you to
see that’s very best so they’re going to
do great things about country the
regulator is going to tell you the
information that they can give you which
is here’s how we’re going to probably do
it okay that’s helpful but it sustain
your lane kind of information it’s not
really addressing all these peripheral
issues that finance this is going to
give you the data they’re going to
certain things about it
and then the concern Simpson is going to
give you a piece of the truth also the
public want you here but it is still
true but what they are not telling you
and the despite the fact that it
produces this radioactive waste several
ways of handling that too and it’s also
incredibly well protected so every piece
of that comes form the every piece of
that helps put together the picture so
there’s a lot of different but separate
facts and feelings the third thing the
people – that’s why it’s really
difficult if you don’t know how to feel
about things and you’re getting
information when people use truth in a
way that’s unfair or it remitted of
reality so I can tell you that there is
enough water in the air to join me in
that room well technically yes if I were
together having three water molecule in
the room
we have to consider not just whether
something is actually true but how its
presented and are these things that
could actually happen so when someone
gives you information and they present
it in a way that’s unfair
or representative of some other version
of truth or some other reality that they
want you to see a lot of times I come to
because they use emotional arguments
right so getting back to the back to the
feeling thanks to the internet and
everything somebody who really know
something maybe about credentials they
believe the same thing we do rather than
perhaps having a conversation with
somebody who does have credentials we
know we have that person on my wife who
we lovingly disagree with right
but regardless there is sometimes just
misinformed
arming yourself with all that truth that
you got first they are learning to
separate those facts and feelings none
of us none of this even matters if
you’re not going to succeed and open
mind if you’re not willing to consider
other points of view if you’re not
willing to recognize when maybe you need
to consider something else there’s
something to say that brings in air as
opposed to truth maybe that’s because
all the conflicting information maybe
it’s because we have so much grown ass
all the time presented in such a
convincing way that but really we do
have lucked out we had a lot of big
seconds and next time you’re faced to
the decision your timing in your own
life
or maybe you’re trying to help your
community make a decision about
something these are the things that you
can keep in mind you can separate facts
from damage arm yourself with every
thought so the truth you possibly can
use that to separate up enough
information and then YouTube in my
manage being complicated intersection
