Polyglotism As A Superpower | Mubarak Showole | TEDxAPUKL

hello everyone and my name is Moe Berg
Shirley I’m 22 years of age
Nigerian by transport Muslim by religion
and human vibrates you must all like
asked why I explicitly describe myself
like that but that is connected to the
end of the presentation so please pay
close attention how many of you all
knows what a polyglot means so just a
few raise of hand so I’m going to
clarify that out of the way so polyglots
polyglot isn’t I’m going to clarify that
out of the way a polygraph is someone
who speaks more than a lot of languages
to speaks more than four to five
languages so that’s a polyglot so
someone who speaks more than four to
five languages and I personally speak
more than seven
[Applause]
but before I continue event ask most of
us are like to say most of us are
bilingual so due to the – due to the
error of Technology and due to how the
world has become much more connected we
really need we need more than one
language to survive so that’s usually
our mother tongue and a complementary
language probably English so here in
Malaysia it is there three races so
Malays Indians and Chinese
so it’s probably Malay in Malay Indian
and Chinese and then English so we’re
mostly fighting for but I’d like to see
our area raise of hands how many English
speakers we have in the hospital it’s
probably obvious but the resonance is
good for the camera so yes English
speakers Malay speakers
Mandarin speakers Arabic speakers you
see and as I go on and on
Swahili speakers French speakers Somali
speakers as I go on and on you see that
I raise my hands
usually and but for Chinese of course I
can raise my hands so high because I
only speak a little bit of matter
started learning and as you speak this
language when you start speaking much
more than three languages the language
is really connected you find the
connection so but of course except
Mandarin because yes it’s the hardest
language for reasons
so I’m what I mean by it so you don’t
find you don’t see a connection between
Nina sharps monitor what I mean such a
bar or intern and I watch on Nigeria or
something like that you don’t find a
connection that connection with other
languages for example nama to mera naam
kya hai or Messiah or
dunya in dunya dunya dunya so which
means walk so you find those connections
and it makes it easier to learn but that
doesn’t mean it’s very easy it just
makes it easier to learn
so anyways my discovery to polyglot
isn’t the discovery or as I call it the
discovery of my superpower because I
find fully proficient as a superpower it
started four years ago when I finished I
was already by Namco by the time I was
um I was six because I’m your bar by
culture and so but when I finished my
primary school my father immediately a
week after that my father said I’m going
to the north of Nigeria to continue my
secondary school my mother was very
confused why are you just going to throw
my son all the way far away from us just
to continue the secondary school but of
course meant but I had this one
attendance no there has to be a magnet
so yes so that happened and within three
months I could already speak the
language almost like a native so and
that’s what you call a hyper pointer so
for example in Malaysia
reading within three months after I
speak Malay so 7e check out the language
[Applause]
famous cellist Philip in Yemen white and
an salafiyyah
this is now and I became a high
performance so I learned Arabic in Yemen
there was no school trip and my father
thinks my father he paid for the trip
and which was to learn Arabic in Yemen
and within two months and a half event
Arabic came back to Malaysia where I
continued my high school when for when
for our big debates competitions one has
semi-finalists and top five best speaker
[Music]
by my Kaufman in Malaysia I could all
speak the same language and I started to
pick up some and rain events more people
picked up so he picked up Samadhi picked
up friends because I met someone special
yes and but the muscle because most
people know me I’m very jovial person I
tried to speak to you in your language
because that is just what I do
and the question that most people asked
me is how to speak this many languages
so which will make this next next slide
the fundamentals of learning any
language they are poor therefore make on
my main points are like to address
according keys I think you need to you
need to understand in order for your
journey to learning languages to be easy
easier so number one we have to be
humble so components and humility
you have to be humble enough to realize
to accept that you’re in different
countries things have done differently
different culture different mindsets and
you’re willing to learn the way they do
things that is no more you have to be
humble enough to realize that
place number one number two
inquisitiveness you have to always keep
asking questions like you don’t just
expect to know what the name of library
in malay if you don’t ask or so purpose
the quran or what canal can you just
have to keep asking questions no matter
how stupid you might think your question
is but you have to keep asking because
you don’t know and the cure to ignorance
is asking number three remain fearless
remain fearless because this that’s the
most this is what I find most difficult
for people to let go in fear of making
mistakes despair of being loved that
they fail bit insulting but you have to
just let yourself go and yes people
might laugh when you ask them or when
you when you say some things right so
for example Apple him in Arabic means
too far huh but you don’t pronounce it
right you call it too far up you don’t
even pronounce the ha correctly and
people’s might laugh or people might
laugh when you don’t pronounce humble eh
what’s right so but just let go skip
learning is accepted embrace it and be
better because at the end of the day
they’re going to laugh you’re going to
take learn their language they’re going
to remain but they’re going to only
speak their language anything at the end
of the day you can speak in their
language with that number the next one
has practice you have to keep practicing
of course practice make makes perfect as
we know
might not come easy for some people like
it does for me but the effort is what
mattered you have to keep practicing so
for me the way I usually practice is
that I put myself in situations in my
head I just put myself in situations
when I’m idle and try to get off of
those situations in different languages
in my head yes and the fourth is repeats
to go to the new place become humble you
staying positive
you make Paris you can practice in and
there goes on and on but granny
languages and you can all the language
involved is almost pointless because the
most important language you can speak of
that I speak it’s your character the
most important language you can speak to
anyone it’s your character
your ability to see people not for not
for their race component skintone not
for their color not for the gender but
just to connect to people based on a
personal level based on their
personality that that is what I call the
human language so your character is the
most important language you can speak
these people having a great character
meeting so let me give you a slippage on
how I usually introduce myself when I
need to be without speaking of work
which means nama saya Mubarak done
Sayid nice guy my name is Navarro and
I’m a nice guy that those three things
though so the first one the second swap
and the green breaks all lingual barrier
between of communication and lingual
barrier between myself and the person
I’m trying to establish a genuine
relationship with or genuine
communication with so
there are my ex housemates Chama Felton
myself and Joseph little story about
Joseph Joseph used to be my housemate
and he was we fought twice now as I told
you guys I’m a guy who’s very jovial
I tried to make everybody laugh I try to
make everybody happy
I try to you know I try to comment I’m
very apologetic when I when I do
something wrong but Joseph both times
have been thoughts just like one on the
past how did he mean he apologized first
both times that is the character I would
remember Joseph or for the rest of my
life not how fluent is English was but
help you went normally is know how
fluent Arabic is but how much of a good
character you portray how much how much
how much love and care hands and how
much personality is shown over my time
with you my time of being with you so
that it was out remember for the rest of
my life and that is what I call the
human language because once you’re in
once you’re able to portray a good
character you have spoken every single
language in this wall because we joined
by Passport
Muslim by Europe by religion but human
matrix we are human by base and we all
have feelings for your Latin emotions
and that is really what we should talk
which leave me to end this with a
picture yes as we all know speaks a
thousand words and a picture speaks a
thousand words as we all know let’s
remember that you are young artists and
your character is a picture that you
think your characters other pictures you
think so please please
