Poetry as emotional Catharsis | Saima Afreen & Akila Gopalakrishnan | TEDxVNRVJIET

now talking about catharsis it’s true
poetry it’s telepathic both to the poet
and to the readers do you know that in
Exeter University London the students
are asked to go to old age homes and
read poems to the old people because
research shows that when people come
across the million lines
it helps curing dementia has become
reconnecting the old memories that they
have otherwise lost and it’s also the
patient as the poet himself who often go
through a lot of internal conflict a lot
of day-to-day stress a lot of demons
that literature presence of self that
cases images come to the mind of the
poet and the images can be from anywhere
of course nature is the primary source
and through nature the poet picks up two
words that flow onto the paper like
flowers now talking about flowers let’s
pick up an image of water water in many
religions in many myths in many cultures
is known to be significant to healing it
takes a lot from its idea it takes away
the pain it washes away the ions of
darkness the other kind of frustration
that is sitting deep inside of you
that’s what a lot of people love to sit
near the riverbanks put this field in
the water and feel afraid a different
kind of feeling which work on
subconscious levels so for a poet when
he or she goes are never banks and on
the beach it’s a very different feeling
and when it come across poets you will
come across some sea poems some ocean
oil or some river boy so the point that
I’m going to present I wrote it on the
beach of inland ocean
I had gone to meld a certain assignment
homage of the stars of a profession so I
present a poem it’s called the ocean
never returns our names I wrote our
names in cursive curliness Alec
clinging to each other tightly
infinitely kissing shells and in these
steps of coral reefs stories the ships
that starfish bring to the shows the
ocean polishes our names
gently strokes the forests within the
morphemes where Memphis rain mingling
with the green waters bleach in our
hearts of pain of past raised histories
they bow holding the letters on their
foreheads still back rise and Adam nails
the treasure the history is paratah
Peterson and the stars that
waters waiting forever for laila-majnu
his are still named none of us can deny
that nature can be very encompassing and
and just England’s us in its fools in
fact going ahead from nature it’s also
our own experiences and our own moments
if you go down your memory lane you will
have enough instances and anecdotes or
moments where you connect and it’s just
enough to bring a smile yes and a smile
sometimes it’s just about enough to tell
you that fine
move on you will come to terms with it a
very simple example could be childhood
now how are you first here I’m sure none
of us yet still I would like to ask how
many of us will deny that any time you
pass a child be it to the neighborhood
or the trains and the buses or wherever
you go and you see the child indulging
in his innocent antics you can’t resist
a smile none of us can deny that we
definitely go passed by a smile of
course so long the child doesn’t poop in
your lap but can’t be anybody’s child
also never say but but when that luxury
of not pooping it’s not available to a
mother so what a mother does like I I
have a seven-year-old daughter so along
with the boobs of the peas and
everything as a as a dutiful mother who
looks forward to collecting memories of
the child I dutifully note down all the
milestones she walked she crawls she
babbles she giggled and everything and
somewhere in the process there are
stories she you know she just spins and
spins and well there’s a huge collection
to that sometimes going back reading
themselves I have a habit of noting them
down and reading them just Kindles the
smile that just you know lightens your
head and you know that let’s move on
this time too shall pass and we’ll
overcome whatever is there right at that
moment so there is this small poem which
I wrote for her she is my little fairy
so a fairy steal Karis in the middle you
bend your head backwards
fishwire Karloff’s to kiss your knees
you wish to say them and body pink I
undo a lot of strands slowly one by one
your tales fantasies and dreams you
narrate the story of Rapunzel in plush
shades of a new vocabulary and combo
rainbow cocooning me in you never great
all it takes is a brushstroke and you to
paint the snake head children and no
matter how old we are the child inside
us never ask
never sleep it’s always waiting to come
out and when it comes out the fullest
many trains outside especially all of us
who are confined into nine to five jobs
or worse 2014 to seven jobs like me I
have to run on a call being in media and
always up there for a story so what
happens when trains outside and get
chapped you’re trapped inside a cubicle
bitter skull silent what you hear is
only quits a clatter of the keyboard
your mouse is moving and it’s raining
outside
and everything is washed with clarity
and it’s dancing and people are enjoying
what they do there you just go out you
see my going out you can’t go out
because your work is calling you and you
have to stay back in the office it’s a
couple of years back I was working on a
report and I was filing it and it
started to rain I so badly wanted to go
out I could not
so in the middle of the report came this
form I’m talking about childhood it’s
our mother tongue also which sticks back
to those little tiny years that the
teacher comes to your house
teaches you maybe Hindi Molly
go English to do whatever my mother
tongue is Aldo and I also speak a lot of
him dates so this point I wrote in Hindi
and although and it’s on rain the title

Cathy bull honky Arjun sa kill King
Ashish a key barometer of the hair
bodies to see very oxygen this is the
beauty of what mother tongue does I
didn’t get any caps so this is what
happens when we try to face our own
emotions in order to deal with them
especially our own personal experiences
but how the thought that you think it
would be if you are put in someone
else’s shoe and to experience what
perhaps you have and they don’t have a
small example of that could be what if
you have to spend a few hours being
blind
one of the major senses I stock I speak
eyes dance I sing
that’s what eyes do to us and we had a
dancer before us who demonstrated that
it’s so beautifully what if I have to
tell you that try to experience if you
are blind
what does that experience teach you now
how many of you have been to this
restaurant called dialogue in the dark
quite a few number I would recommend
that please go and visit the restaurant
simply for the experience of it now when
I went there the the menu is set that
there are blind Stephens blind on
blindfolded blind Stephens who has
fought you inside make them make you sit
and serve the
it’s absolutely dark pitch dark an
experience of what or how that world
could be now how do you take this as an
experience for me personally speaking it
choked my senses
I couldn’t eat my food properly but when
I came out there was a sense of
realization that perhaps we get too
bogged down by our own troubles and we
feel that why am I the only one of the
receiving end when perhaps there are
people who are trying to view the entire
world or live that entire world with
just a few of those senses which perhaps
with which I am gifted with so this was
a poem I wrote after I visited the
restaurant called dialogue in the dark
and it’s titled eclipsed dark darker my
eyeball splits superlatives I follow you
behind a shoulder leading me leading the
other the other and the other was
sandpaper my fingers weaker deeper into
activity of room in looked inky I taps
it on a powder coated chair trace brains
of varnish on the table curving at the
corners and count the chirps of a bird
faceless and nameless you serve me the
menu order drink porcelain of a
partition plate as a Briton runs along
with my finger drooping wrong doom on a
coarse circular mat the water bottle
tricks clutched in my left hand which
dark black out I sit now on the other
side a whiff of steamed rice sits an
assemble on my tongue said I waited
loves a push down my throat I would have
otherwise dissected mash and flush them
amiss the tenderness of crunching
cucumbers and tap dance to music seeping
into the Soraa the scent of bond line
soaks the oil from a hands do you dream
do you cringe do you fear
do you fatty shadows high breathe to
your voice miles a diamond ring your nan
sightedness syllables a mirror my own
become
of judgment by sight I returned holding
the empty water bottle to become
gadadhara again in the light of 100 Suns
thank you talking about catharsis
putting yourself in somebody else’s
shoes
sounds more easy and tough how about
like she said that being a blind person
and you go in darkness and see that
they’re funding that a lot of objects
around you that also serves a sort of
catharsis because we all are struggling
they were stressed day to day right
basis and we have a lot of problems are
all but I won’t say it’ll disappear you
can minimize traffic but thinking about
somebody else who is struggling with a
much much bigger problem so talking
about people who do not have vision I
have a poet friend called Joseph Anita
and she is also a professor in Delhi
University the points that she writes
about are full of light colors she
writes about a lot of flowers a lot of
butterflies rainbows a lot of clouds the
sunshine early morning daytime I just
found that certain feel how she might be
feeling when she is just in the pond
especially when she’s writing about
colors and what colors seem to her so I
just asked her what do colors mean to
you she said I just go and ask rose it’s
the name maybe the road is telling me
and black I go ahead and write it as
black now how beautiful is that
so what she experienced was of pain what
I experienced here in this wing that I’m
going to present is of joy because
whatever this lady
who is a poet and is visually she is
troubled she can see things in her own
light which I being a sighted person
cannot see all of things mean very
distant to me and very different about
yet I see her very happy she is full of
life and she smiles and she talks about
a lot of joyous things it’s titled sarah
necrosis of channel one after the Cermak
was fortunate because they just come
from a village of andhra where the
ceramics factory are there and she has
experienced a lot of dust a lot of
problems and the way she talks about is
it’s very different and her next book is
also titled that Cermak evening so it
isn’t a point ceramic positive Shailaja
Senna necrosis of general shape the
streets of my childhood a kingdom of
clay cups hinged on a coin the sleeping
trees gifts green shadows to puddles
paper goes the spa foreign forbidden him
to the light confined in rainwater tiny
was less than a reed man back of the
lips to the sunlight and rapid7 colors
and no
that lights cannot erase darkness the
black stars within the goal of dawn
covering kingdom of darkness is a myth
its denizens don’t care to pay golden
slippers they have the legend saved
buried in onyx t fossilized roses more
ancient than the dancing girl of one in
Japan the dark mouths of genomicist ring
the day the red clay in their beliefs
Devon Mobile’s crossing Ganga and
sharona’s flashing with ugly their
kingdoms are now faded blaze the past
from photos dreams to justin fingers of
jokes now who strokes but curved shape
the tiny handles the Bosque feel she
pops her Birds advice go to that space
it is a cool shadow under the scent of
Patna trees Schiphol Zeon’s sits and
it’s sweet darkness
whole happiness finally if not a
conclusion that’s what we see at the end
even through this journey of emotional
catharsis so this car the ladies
compartment because they middle yourself
with the co-passengers well it’s not
only for the ladies I hope you even
think men would find themselves
mirroring themselves as co-passengers
where we all are somewhere together with
strangers still sharing a bond somewhere
so this is the ladies compartment we are
a boutique travel to the handbag laptops
and land banks spotting IDs of rings and
torrents barring dark circles for
unmatched conversation of etc in food
fabric penance family we manage up
safety and freedom in lipgloss songs
Tina cones and swipes of Facebook and
whatsapp on the phone nasal calls a
peanut and samosa vendors are flip by in
bookmark pages hoping that one day a
rainbow would find the eyes
gazing emptily
at the window a laughter indulges an
anonymous company of dry sweat and aura
for a litany we was with a body mass
index pH of pimples dimples and wrinkles
on pedigree of sandals prat flippers
stiff joints and and um lower back we
are one in many many in one soon we
would slumber to forget songs leading
the lady in the valley Compostela near
the door to rattle alone
with empty shadows tomorrow will be a
new dawn Sun screamed with another
ticket for this daily slope in the
ladies compartment a water journey and a
journey we take every day and the
journey of life that we are progressing
ahead so through catharsis we learn the
progress ahead in a good way and you
fight both with a wisdom and angel at
some point of time sometimes they have
to make choices sometimes they have to
leave something behind and what better
way to do this than to have poetry in
your hands maybe a song maybe a couple
it may be a poem or just browse through
some Nursery Rhyme furniture that is
also very beautiful foil and that awaken
the small child within you and takes you
forward so I ask the people to keep
fighting the demons keep smiling keep
traveling and keep progressing ahead and
I conclude this with a couplet I wrote a
couple of years back Joe Moore Doris
Day’s and Ayoka to suffer up knobhead
