Our Addiction to Instant Gratification | Taesun Shim | TEDxChadwickSchool

today the plebeian means to constantly

hear how lazy narcissistic and I’m

entitled for generations and the sad

truth is that we agreed order the late

nineteen eighties nineteen nineteen ISM

perhaps through the early two-thousands

my generation or Millennials is most

college grew up in the advent of spawn

was in the Russian Springs for as

infinite technologically we grow

protected and entertained by 24 hours EP

networks and aided by the understanding

that the answer to everything lies our

pockets but that very technological

rather than our society as painting a

very harsh in autonomous we’re called

generation me lazy selfish and narcissus

and I’m just doesn’t make sense we split

our owns two massive stores with

pictures of our own face a cute dogs

resident years ago people would upon the

family of gorgeous ones which of our

stats our calories blocks we took the

number of likes on social media daily

noting that some people even my

followers unless their social accounts

but perhaps more significantly evolved

least and more time than any other

generation in final America but of

course we do we grew up with Google and

smartphones with computing power greater

than when entire compute at just a few

years ago with that lovely convenience

of having all the information we need at

our fingertips we don’t have to go to

the library to sift through thousands of

dusty books because the library travels

with us we can find the answers we want

with just a few clicks in fact if I

completely ignore the power

very attentive I would probably be more

dumb and smart so my generation in other

words as a bar to expose to instant

gratification with technology I have a

question I can go online and finally

find the answers immediately is my acne

normal how do I do well on the SAT what

should I do to get a girl to like me I

can do all of that and get my answers

right away not only bad waters her brain

was doing anything for their community

service or participating as in club even

my watch tells me great job for walking

around campus instant gratification is

it an addiction we can no longer escape

and it’s an addiction because it feels

good it feels good to receive

compliments if you look good to receive

likes and comments on social media

that’s why we go on our phones over and

over and over again instant

gratification is an addiction you can no

longer see and it’s just not funny now

I’m the team in here now and if you

years ago I started talking with the

town show Chase Manhattan receiving

thousands of Lights in a week dumping

day after day every day

instant gratification I post a picture

and then the response I get the legs and

in the comments I get the followers but

as the pilot that posted less frequently

maybe a few times a month and as a

result the lights and comments of

followers also slowed down as well and

as a result anyway I waited my

successful account that I initially set

up to showcase my passion to others

solely for the fact that I was getting

it’s a gratification maybe pursue

photography for the wrong reasons my

Instagram account was supposed to be a

simple

volume what I love to do but instead it

turned into a medium of some trails and

another example ever the prospect

I’ve been running across country for

five years now and the first spirit I

was I was so but I still got some medals

my first year I ran being announced at

cross-country Invitational easily one of

the biggest prospects Phoenix in the

world

and I don’t remember the details but I’m

pretty sure there’s an even mirror to

finish the Rings

I still got a special achievement met

it’s to that occasion I do something I

instantly receive my prize regardless of

performance that’s complex don’t get

medals for losing anymore

it’s the winning despite losing and what

now confronted with the hard loss no

prize given well as hard night but what

most do not realize that they call the

buggy was narcissistic and entitled is

that behind our outer image is that we

are extremely sensitive and extremely

fat and that area fertility comes from

Irish to instant gratification well just

look at you can’t even wait a few

seconds for a page to load online but

those extra seconds they’re nothing when

the Wi-Fi is down and we absolutely

cannot get what we want

whether you want it all hell breaks

loose my generation is so addicted to

[Music]

it’s ratification and when we are

confronted with hard reality life 70

becomes to be put on that tech tip that

we can do what we want

pew who we want to inject what we want

when we want it if we believe enough bad

news it’s not that easy and that abuse

is it so easy for us to realize either

because we turn negative in our pants

and ran max take the workplace for

exactly well we’re the most educated

generation as 27 percent of a bachelor’s

degree or higher in fact our median

earnings are about two thousand dollars

less than our counterparts in 1980 so to

be honest the lowest value lifestyles

that incorporate work with our

passionate activities on other’s work is

no longer everything for us we adopt a

work to live not live to work and tell

us we want to make an impact to work

that gives us a sense of achievement but

then again we also want to include

comfortable chairs in context but it all

ties down for this idea it’s an instant

gratification we choose the work that

gives us that that that’s what we want

to make an impact because when we do we

get that sense of achievement we’ve been

chasing or a lot of us but the issue the

biggest issue is that this to that

education is now all we were system we

want more I was magic dopamine releasing

madness so we sleep with that woman

who’s next to our backs we sit in

classes in meetings with their phones on

the table not tucked away because we’re

awaiting another text or another like

another notification and that’s also why

Millennials 40%

of Millennials today we initially

promoted regardless of performance every

two years we’ve grown up not having to

wait for anything

and from our addiction to crisis and

life’s there’s another problem other

than the fact that were so annoying we

have started to learn who we really are

in order to fit the image of someone

else you see to get more instant

gratification from our daily lives we

try to change what minutes we are to get

one Prince and to get more response we

think that we are not up to par and as

I’m classmates and friends we think that

we’re not smart enough you know athletic

enough not able enough to pursue what we

really want to do and in the end we end

up pursuing someone else’s because

history gives a more less than one pop

that we end up pursuing someone else’s

dream because she gets more prizes

morning jobs more confidence it’s

astonishing how quickly we have got this

foreign dream as our economics the hard

work and patience are important values

but we end up choosing what feels good

in what’s easiest in the moment and many

times copying someone else is easier

than it is to develop our own character

and personality

so the narcissistic image of millennium

was therefore is one of them retired

people call us containment nice

because they were obsessed about us

that’s not true

well oftentimes we think be honest we

don’t like when we are recessed

antechamber ourselves and putting on a

false aside for more less and more

attention and that’s not right that’s

what we all need to realize it’s time to

take a break it’s time to slow down and

think about the long one of the most

valuable lessons I’ve ever learned is to

domain my immediate responses you know

the in other words it’s stop and think

before launching exact I think you can

power of social media we’ll get to more

friends and in our real own conversation

and it doesn’t stop there and we also

realize that we don’t need to fulfill

this addition to its to ratification our

being someone we’re not to impress

others we can fight for your happiness

and written fulfillment developing

character will take a really really long

time but in the long term

we’ll just really be ourselves after all

if we spend time trying to be someone

else

Oh Ruby yourselves be worth therefore

the greatest happiness in greatest

success lies in pursuing who we are to

be honest we can overcome to an extent

our addiction to instant gratification

just thinking

you see the long not just as lectern and

for me at least when I keep my phone

away at dinner table at school days and

consciously remind myself but there is a

greater meaning pursuing real

relationships and take much longer to

develop than a spy prank or a double tap

sure I won’t get an instant response

that I would have gone online but in the

long run in the long time this is worth

a barrel [Applause]
