On the Blacklist | Christopher Shin Packard | TEDxSNU

good afternoon my name is Krishna
Krishna backer and I own and operate a
little bar and for the first time in a
long time I have my family a puppy and a
project very I’ve had a bit of a journey
together in this journey today is
November 10 tomorrow is the 11th which
was better today a day with those who
served in the armed forces are out there
I felt obligated to mention this day but
this talk touches many issues faces of
those who have served mainly that they
killed themselves that rate exceeds 20
veterans a day let’s get into I was born
and raised in Toledo Ohio beautiful
childhood there’s not too much to
complain about following a family
tradition I joined the United States
Army in 2004 I was in the United States
Army for around 50 months all those 50
months I spent 25 months in Iraq Baghdad
in 2005 in northern Iraq in 2007 I came
home a different person there were so
many things going out of my head that
after a short honeymoon period being
home and being a civilian I began to
blame family and close relations for my
yaaaaaay self-imposed seclusion I
purposely drove up those closest to me
in physics though I was not working
I was drinking for too much I was not in
global University all in all that was in
a very dark place an effort to escape
this feeling the musicians that I was
experiencing the Black Hawks in
particular I decided the best thing for
me to do was to flee to California you
start from my life leaving the
unhappiness behind sell the truck learn
this burger buy a motorcycle and go to
college coast with retrospection I can
now tell you that merely relocating your
problems is no solution as my time in
California grew I remained antisocial
and separately I did not involve myself
to the University and I made no effort
to expand on a very small network of
friends I was dark and depressed as I’d
ever been in my life
while I lived in that sunny state my
decisions and my mindset during this
California period made my mental health
deployments I began to plan my escape
from this from California and my
continued unhappiness on my motorcycle
prepare to prepare myself for my next
move I began with promises sobriety for
a calendar year I would not drink or
smoke I figured by quitting cold turkey
on all of my favorite substances and
getting on the move
I would be healthy enough to find a
place where I could be happy my search
took me from coast to coast and up and
down for seventy three hundred miles in
three months I spent alone
[Music]
I was looking for a place where I could
finish University and maybe just maybe
find it one of these the forced
isolation traveling solo did my head and
no favors it was during this time that I
went weeks without speaking to anyone
other the gas station attendants there
are many times where I considered ending
my road trip in a permanent fashion
bridges and cliffs they began to take on
a certain appeal the only thing that
stopped me from giving in to these
motivations was that my journey who did
so when I finally pulled into Bowling
Green Ohio and found myself driving down
Main Street USA I immediately felt at
peace something about this small farming
town felt right so I rented a house I
enrolled in university and it just so
happened that 365 days of sobriety had
passed and I was due for a whiskey I was
made to feel welcome at a local
establishment and it was that moment
that I pinpoint as the beginning from my
path back from the desert I felt so
welcome that I became a became a regular
patrons hang about so much that they
eventually hired me after a semester
working in security
I moved behind the bar I learned the
trade out of our tent tending bar forced
me to leave my self-imposed isolation it
made me drink socially and not alone it
reminded me of the happiness people have
in their lives and by providing the
service as just a small part of their
happiness I could share it enable all of
their smiles and maybe just maybe I
could make someone feel as welcome as if
myself was made to feel bartending
forced me to do something that I had
voided for the years since my separation
from the military was something I had
long avoided I was becoming a member of
community when you’re a bartender you
cannot help but being forced out of my
self-imposed isolation was a blessing it
made friendships worth having
relationships worth pursuing were
Danny’s late nights actually motivated
me to take out a bigger course loaded
versity graduate a bit earlier and by
making a few drinks talking to a few
people I was able to gain a bit of
perspective on just how crazy I’ve been
being around others at the bar help me
put away some of the sadness I had
carried with me since my separation the
travelling blog hit me again after a few
years of doing this small town slow
college lifestyle and so back on my bike
I took off again but the difference this
time it was not a blind flight like my
original trip this was seeking the next
stop on my journey this trip ended and I
seized an opportunity to come here to
guess my first and only other job I have
held here while bartending was at my
friend’s establishment Liberty after
learning Korean cocktail culture at
their establishment I opened blacklist
in November 2016
the goal is provide a space for people
to spend time the way I like to spend
time with good friends and good drinks
in a comfortable place November 19th of
this year will be day 1 year 3 and
blacklist and each and every day at the
bar has been evolved to me it has
provided the purpose I was lacking in my
life
it helps me maintain the social
interactions I’ve used to avoid the bar
keeps me so busy that I cannot struggle
with my memories and so when I make a
round of cocktails and witness a family
having a reunion when I pour a couple
they got a wine and watch that man
and hopefully the except when I’m
celebrating with the mocktail for the
newly expecting couple these are the
moments that make my work a pleasure
these are the events that provide me the
purpose and I attribute these
interactions that keeping the darkest
event so I thank you very much for your
time this afternoon I hope to raise your
glass with you officers [Applause]
