“Not my vice, but my future” | Maraha Hernandez | TEDxChallengeEarlyCollegeHS

[Applause]
as a child I grew up around drugs and
alcohol but mostly alcohol I come from a
family with a history of drinking and
smoking I saw a few of my close family
members abuse drugs and/or alcohol
people who are loving care for so much
when I was younger I never really
understood why they abuse these
substances but I knew each one of them
had their reasons as I grew older I
learned that that was their advice that
is a word I would always hear everyone
use oh it’s my vice a vice is a moral
depravity or corruption substance use
disorders are characterized by recurrent
use of alcohol or other drugs or both
that result in significant impairment
about 1 in 8 children age 17 or younger
lived in households with at least one
parent who had a past year substance use
disorder that is 8.7 million children
about 1 in 10 children lived in
households with at least one parent who
had a past year alcohol use disorder
that is 7.5 million children about 1 in
35 children lived in households with at
least one parent who had a past year
illicit drug use disorder that is 2.1
million children and the number of kids
who live in a household where a parent
has a substance use disorder keeps
increasing when you live in when you
live in that environment and you are
surrounded by that lifestyle most of the
time everyone assumes that you’ll end up
like them that one day you’ll end up
abusing drugs and/or alcohol yourself
I’ve always liked to prove people wrong
after seeing everything for his hand I
knew and told myself that I would never
want to end up like them being affected
by their actions personally made me
realize that the lifestyle they had
chosen to live was a lifestyle that I
did not want to live despite others
actions you shouldn’t let them let them
determine your future or how you should
be or the way you should act people’s
actions can have an effect in your life
either positive or negative life will
teach you lessons will keep learning
every day so accept your pass handle the
present and be ready to face your future
it is very important for everyone to
identify their vice because we all have
vices and they can impact others in a
way we might not know now I want
everyone in the audience to ask
themselves will I let someone’s vice
determine my future thank you [Applause]
