My Crown | Ruqiya Althalmi | TEDxKids@ElCajon

do you shower with that on
do you have hair under there are you
bald these other type of questions I get
when I’m wearing my a job imagine every
time you leave your house you know you
have to be ready to expect hateful and
cruel comments thrown at you hey there
i’m Makia I’m an ordinary young girl
living like I am full of dreams that
will hopefully become true I’m a hijabi
that means a girl with a scarf on her
head I came here to talk to you about my
life as a hijab’ one afternoon after a
long exhausting day of school I came
home I had a feeling me they never felt
before I felt confident and strong I was
eager but at the same time proud of
myself the feeling was so amazing words
can’t explain it I was ready to begin a
new journey and my life I knew it was
going to be rocky but I think I was
ready for the level of commitment and
dedication I needed for this journey I
was ready to begin a new chapter in my
wife a couple weeks passed by and I was
still wondering and questioning myself
should I consider wearing it or should I
just wait on a Thursday night I went to
my mosque there is this really inspiring
an emotional lecture that I heard the
man speaking to us call they say it was
telling us about how this girl got
bullied but then he told us how God was
still with her and that’s what made a
strong girl that really gave me strong
feelings that made me think harder
at that point I was officially ready
before I went ty mom I went to my older
sister my older sister is inspiration
save her struggle through hard times
made me think of myself in that position
seeing her happy made me happy too but
as you know who we are siblings we don’t
always get along I told her I need to
talk to her she was shocked I guess
because I don’t usually tell her I need
to talk to you so I started off by
saying so um do you know that about my
age as she started acting maturing
wearing the hijab well I think I’m ready
what how do you know you’re ready um
hello wake up I was born ready after
that conversation I was officially ready
to tell my mom I told my mom and guess
what she was so proud of me that tears
are gathering up in your eyes there were
tears of joy it was the first day of me
with my head job I was not used to it
but trust me I was going to get used to
it like music to my ears someone said
you’re pretty I felt like a queen not a
princess but a queen at that time here I
discovered Malala yep Malala is designed
my one and only inspiration she makes me
feel thankful she got shot by the
Taliban just for standing up for girls
bright I adore her quotes won’t cut the
I love is one child one teacher one pen
and a book can change the world
impressive right
she makes me feel confident and strong
like right now I am standing in front of
a big crowd explaining my life so that’s
my story do you visit me a different way
Oh
or am I still the same I have been
wearing this crown for about two and a
half years I feel confident and strong
when I get compliments trust me it
always puts me in a good mood okay I
know you got a mouthful of questions for
me but just one more thing I want to say
do what you believe in and never ever
give up fighting for your rights
thank you
