we will go home over mountains we will
go home we will go home we will go home
over mountains we will go over mountains
we’ll go home we will go
we’ll go over mountains and stories lead
us home
may peace be on your heart and stillness
on your tongue for I tell you a tale
told long ago the tale worth telling and
in the long ago there was a man
[Music]
and he was known the countryside round
for the beauty of his cattle and the
sweetness of the milk that they brought
oh he does the best he can to stay
humble with a treasure like this on his
land round his property every day day in
and day out
but you know a time comes when the man
notices a change
for it begins to seem to him that the
cattle are giving less milk and less
milk you know he’s not the kind of man
to sit at home and fret he’s not the
kind of man to sit at home and worry and
wonder no he knows how to take care of
his own and so he decides that he will
spend a night in the field with the cat
he goes out with nothing but a blankets
and he sits beside a great stone he sits
still as a stone still as a stone
and as he sits there he watches in the
moon she Rises the moon she travels off
the moon she sets and as he looks above
his eyes they are filmed with an
unceasing dance of wonder
[Music]
well his eyes they begin to open wider
and as he looks above for it begins to
seem to him that one of the stars above
is blazing brighter than it had before
and he watches his eyes growing wider
and wider and wonder for it’s not his
imagination no the star is blazing soon
it is blazing right over his field right
over those beautiful cattle and as he
watches to his great amazement ah the
light of the stars it begins to weave
itself into a set of silver stares
and the last of the starlight it weaves
itself around a figure that is
descending those stairs the figure comes
down plants two feet strong on the
ground and the last of that star light
it weaves itself into a silver mantle
round her shoulders he cannot believe it
for there in front of him is the most
beautiful woman he has ever seen his
mouth hanging open the great grin on his
face
well gradually he begins to be able to
pay attention to the world around him
again he can hear again something
stronger louder than the rhythm of his
own heart he can hear the cattle
sounding and you know they’re not
sounding in fear no they’re familiar
with this they’ve seen this before and
it all comes clear to him in a moment
and he looks at her and he says it’s you
you are the one who’s been coming and
taking the milk she laughs out loud she
says yes my sisters and I we have heard
the song of the cattle we have heard the
people singing of the sweetness of the
milk
night after night each of us in turn we
have come down we have tasted of the
milk we have found it was greatly to our
liking
he cannot believe this but his heart
feels bold and the presence of this
beauty and he looks at her and he grins
and he says you are so beautiful
she boughs her hand and accepting the
compliment he says would you be my wife
things move fast in these old stories
[Music]
he says I promise
to be kind to you I promise never to
beat you and I promise that you won’t
have to sit with the cattle all the time
of the proposal like this how could she
say no she looks at him and she smiles
in return she says you please me I will
be your wife but it will take one more
promise and she moves aside that silver
mantle and she brings forth a small
softly shining basket it’s covered over
with a cloth radiant like the Stars she
says my condition is this all that I
have all that I am I have brought with
me in this basket and you must promise
to leave it to me never to claim it for
your own never to touch never to look he
smiles and he says of course and so
began the greatest joys of his life
for the two of them are wet
and all the loving is so sweet
the laughter fills their home
and he cannot believe that his life is
so full he wishes things could be the
same for always
nine months pasts with this great joy
and there comes a day where he finds
himself alone in the small cottage
so his wife is down with a cattle and
his eyes they range around their home
and he begins to think over the bounty
in his life beautiful home the beautiful
cattle
his beautiful wife and his eyes they
range around their home and he sees for
the first time in all these happy months
the basket in the corner covered with a
softly shining cloth and he wonders
[Music]
what is in that basket and he begins to
think in the way that a contented farmer
might think he says to himself well
after all this is my house
those are my cattle she is my wife
I guess one could say in truth the
basket is also mine
and before he can really see where this
is gonna lead him this thought is
leading his feet across the floor and
before he really thinks too much about
it he’s kneeling down he’s lifting up
that basket and the cloth it falls
crumpled to the floor and he looks
inside and for a moment he’s silent
anypercent laughing and the laughter it
grows wilder and stronger soon the
laughter it’s got his feet moving his
feet they’re moving him round and round
and round their cottage the laughter it
leads him to a wild dance as he says to
himself there’s nothing in the basket
nothing in the basket absolutely nothing
in the basket
[Music]
down in the field his wife
she can hear this commotion coming from
the house because she wonders to herself
what on earth is he doing up there and
her own curiosity pulls her feet up
towards the house she opens the door and
there’s her husband she’s never seen him
like this before
laughing early dancing then she hears
what he’s saying and her eyes they
rained round their home and she sees the
basket with the cloth rumpled on the
floor and all she stands still as a
stone
[Music]
still as a stone
and she says three promises you have
kept and one you have broken you have
looked within the basket and he laughs
and he says there’s nothing in the
basket she stands still as a stone still
as a stone she says I have to go
[Music]
and all he realizes in an instant what’s
just happened and he looks at his wife
and he says oh please don’t
and she says I’ll tell you what I
brought with me in the basket what I
brought with me in the basket was spirit
and it’s just like a human being to
think that spirit isn’t nothing and so
the silver thread of the story spins
itself out but you know that story
doesn’t feel finished for house it’s up
to us to find the way to finish this
story properly by holding strong with
the people beside us what they hold
sacred
[Music]
