[Music]
there are some people
so me people there are some
[Music]
so many people
[Music]
why can’t we why could be what can’t we
why can’t we
gingy wanna see why can’t we
[Music]
this is crazy
it’s the first time it’s writers in
public
[Applause]
thank you it’s awesome that it worked so
thank you
events like these are about sharing IDs
so I thought why not start by sheriff
feeling and make some music together by
by singing together um music for us
personally is rooted deeply in our daily
lives but I think it’s safe to say that
music is of great value to the lives of
many people
music surrounds us basically everywhere
there’s background music in most
workplaces in every shop in the street
sometimes in our homes and our cars and
we might not always notice it there but
on the other hand who hasn’t been
touched by a song at some point or is
there a melody or a rhythm that stays
with you and every time you hear it it
evokes a certain feeling or maybe a
memory music can affect us tremendously
emotionally and sometimes even
physically did you know that every
culture every human community worldwide
knows some form of music I mean some
form of sound expression that transcends
the merely functional so the desire to
express something within us seems to be
a universal human impulse so the song we
just sang together was originally
written for our project sound of colors
and we know it’s not easy to suddenly
start singing in public and maybe you
were a bit shy or felt slightly uneasy
but your instinct told you it’s okay
everybody’s singing along and feels
pretty safe to join but let’s look at
music from a different angle even when
we experience music passively there’s a
lot of chemistry going on in the brain
and it has been scientifically proven
that when we listen or play music
there’s an increased release of dopamine
in the brain
and this increased release of dopamine
gives us gives us the feeling happy
impulse which you also get when we hug
people or kidding like some Facebook
which as we know it’s highly addictive
but it feels really good right but
there’s also something else at work
oxytocin this powerful hormone plays a
key role in acts like empathy and
generosity it directly improves our
ability to trust and to be open towards
one another and this specific hormone
hormone is released instantly while
playing or listening to music and we
can’t do anything about that it’s just
nature but the thing is this weird
chemical process suggests that
essentially music can music is a key
factor in strengthening our social
connection so the sound of colours
project five years ago we were not
thinking about this chemical brain stuff
or any other explanation when we kind of
by accident stumble stumbled upon this
idea one night in a bar we were four
friends for college friends all studying
music at the conservatory again and we
were inspired by the colorful cultural
and ethnic diversity of the city and we
believed in the potential of music to
connect people so after some beers hours
of brainstorming we came up with a wild
idea why not try to connect musicians by
recording them playing all over the city
and bring this together in a music video
the plan wasn’t crystal clear at that
point we wanted to capture live and
honest musical moments and the only
thing that the musicians will get from
us was a demo song that we wrote as a
blueprint for the whole recording
process after a very extensive search
for musicians both professionals and
amateurs which travels through the city
with our mobile recording studio
carrying microphones a bunch of cable
all kind of recording equipments laptops
camera all powered by a car battery a
lot to carry around but it enabled us to
record the whole musicians individually
anywhere we wanted so not only in their
own living room
but equally in the streets on a rooftop
in a church or any football stadium we
finally recorded so many musicians that
we ended up with more than 15 hours of
music and video footage to go through
enough to make a full-length musical
actually yet we had to size it down to a
song of only five minutes so we spent
hours and hours on editing and killing
or darlings and finally after a lot of
discussions and delivery foods actually
we made a song that made it all
worthwhile
a colorful mix in which all musicians
virtually played to get him and so son
of colors was born an audio-visual
project that aims to unite people from
different backgrounds living in one city
with music as a universal language we
were overwhelmed by all the positive
energy that was generated by all these
wonderful moments and warm reactions we
got from everybody who was involved in
this project but also the people who
watched the video afterwards convinced
us that it had so much potential to
inspire people and this this motivated
us deeply so the next three years we
took this mobile studio and went to
different cities in Belgium but to make
that more clear we’d love to show you
this short compilation we made for you
of a couple of thousand cities
many people as well so many people
singing different
[Music]
it is just a field let me give me your
fellow man and if you believe in a
future with people from all regions
different than you it seems like it’s
impossible but my friend I’m telling you
that is
[Music]

this project feels so good
you know music connects it builds
bridges and for us it’s a kind of social
glue that binds people together when we
write a song for sound of colors we
always intentionally leave open space so
the musicians have the opportunity to
tell their own musical story and to
improvise freely and and this is one of
the most beautiful aspects to the
project at least to us it’s like we only
sketch a framework but the outcome
always remains unpredictable at least
more or less what I think is a very
important aspect of the project sound of
colors is by by recording every video in
one city we are not only aiming for a
virtual connection but we create
potential to develop a genuine one in
most cases those musicians are though
they live in the same city
hadn’t met before and they surely didn’t
know what the end result would look like
so the video release is the moment when
everyone finally comes together it’s a
moment to meet face to face a moment to
watch the video that everybody has
contributed to and I’m going to make
music together to jam and always again
this is a truly beautiful moment we do
realize that sound of colors or the
project it’s only a small step but we
believe it’s one in the right direction
to at least
inspire people into bound people we are
actually thinking of ways to create
musical interactions like this and so
many cities yet to discover and use this
project just to spread the idea imagine
we could go to Paris or to London or
wouldn’t it be just beautiful got to go
to go to molenbeek especially in these
times when the intertwining of cultures
is becoming a defining feature of
societies all over the world
music has a potential to make us feel
connected and we believe that music can
bring people together that it paves the
way to empathy social connection and
Trust and after all it’s just fun thank
you

I even fell down
