Maths phobia – are you infected? | Chris Gallagher | TEDxChelmsford

[Music]
[Applause]
so I’m going to talk about a virus virus
that I think he’s widespread and cuts
across gender and class and it’s math
phobia it’s a bonus that they spread
from family to family from the teachers
to children from children to children
I’m going to talk about what it looks
like my experiences of it and how we can
put into it I wonder first of all if I
were to ask people in the audience to
turn to their neighbor and just quickly
do this for us and have a discussion for
10 seconds only 10 seconds and then come
up on stage to talk about the Arts or
wonder what reactions I think that we
maybe three kind of reactions the first
reaction would be yes fantastic doing
maths maths and it’s fractions of these
speakers never doing maths and
expressions it’s unbelievable or you may
be the and this was quite common a
second type of person you may think just
suspect
I’ll get back locally by Tomica vacuum
of sharp where you’ve got with a golf
and I can relax again and that way all
the time the situation’s got past it
again and every fine
or you may be in the third category the
private drain from your face you go to
your vital organs and you were just
failure
you just think maybe to be funny you
ain’t just faking fraud that’ll be
difficult sitting down and saying this
to be quite frankly if the slump board
and go sideways to be on the floor
because that there is a lot of this
about there’s a lot this man so unless
you here for my introduction I do maths
training in schools and a lot of people
this an interesting figure here
two-thirds of Americans fear and loans
the thing is about culture of English
people who don’t care for it much but in
America they fear loathing you hear it a
lot used on I see a lot in schools now
what am I talking about what qualifies
me really is the fact that I was a
little extent that’s been phobic what
about the hair not laughing I will be
all here and if you’re too much
regulation in the census Christmas
decoration the most watching that kind
well I had no problem with number at all
to us very certain definite point those
squiggly lines are were letters and
those squiggly lines of numbers work
well for fine money they were fine until
time for taking tests
titanium testers came along and all of a
sudden things became a little bit
anxious and anxiety started to raise his
head and I didn’t have much time to will
have a comfortable relationship with
mass now this is a chenille tablecloth
it used to be curtains at least we’ve
dog code my mother used to keep this
this curved stroke Tobin drop in the
drawer it wasn’t the food time for food
this was a special occasion tablecloth
generally homework tablecloth so this
temples will get wheeled down usually in
two weakening dollar piracy because it
was always the particular problem I had
in in which there year six was the long
division now I was talking on division
by somebody standing at the front with a
piece of chalk on a blackboard so again
showing me the algorithm the method or
the written method you might want to
call it and then said what they’re
practicing fifty times and I just it was
just by another language I had no idea
what was going on I don’t conceptual
understanding of this of this method and
so obviously this got back to my parents
and then we’d have to take across ten
profit coming out and it would be okay
so we seem very calm
and then super exit is fine so if we’re
in this year now many tops they’re doing
okay fine
this take this away what you take it
away why we take it away cause I told
you we’ve got to see how many times it
goes in then we put those damn they got
there don’t understand why because I
told you they’re falling down rotatable
what and so went on and it really really
increased their anxiety the phobia that
I had from that already just to a new
level and I know I’m standing here
talking about maths my career is permits
now but I avoided no division without a
calculator for the whole of my school
life hosts were managed to get cost if
there was if there was a point in school
what to do long division because I was
so ashamed so ashamed of not doing and
the exact anxiety of it now I hear this
a lot
I hear this a lot I go to school so I do
training in schools and I’m often shown
into a into a place in a school by
someone from the office and if they say
there’s a training on maths miss I don’t
a mess oh I don’t do math you don’t do
that’s what you should go shopping you
might have a car you got a bank account
we don’t do maths Quinta to parents
saying to children and saying appearance
evening I will always never really good
at maths so it’s okay for you to do what
they really say is the virus it’s the
virus putting a big shield and the virus
puts up a shield so you don’t do mess
when you get asked to do math it’s okay
to get it wrong because you’ve already
said you don’t do this and maybe they
won’t even ask you to do grass because
you’ve sinned
now angling schools a lot but why math
where’s the anxiety come from from
that’s what does that originate why do
you have people with scoring job with
experience put me anywhere near New
York’s lowlights there’s me angry
walkways I hate them they’ve talked to
me about oh I don’t do talk to me and
similarly you don’t get that in you know
in English there’s this time this luxury
of time to do things in English people
with terrifying what is it about math
what do we do to children and their dogs
took to cause this now I think this idea
this is how I believe this for a very
long time I couldn’t do miss the people
didn’t my classic junior school they sat
on their their table where they did all
the really exciting that’s cuz they
enjoyed it they seem to be laughing and
enjoying themselves and and thriving
under the change where I was seeing with
my pizza mats they don’t remember speed
that’s simply what being massive
climbing through endless tedious max
which we know was resourceful but there
was no point we Detroit because I bought
them at Jeana I wasn’t mad see I
couldn’t do miss that was for the the
those guys on the mess courts or the
mass girls table
thank you the Mets I couldn’t do this
and this this is pervasive I think this
idea of the gifted child romantics
pervasive it was just a film recently
convicted you’ve seen in the tabloids
all the time about people being gifted
you know it was something else
both of those things in this enlightened
age to know about the ideas for fixed
mindset and if you’re not familiar with
this I urge you to go away but
essentially it’s a wonderful theory by
Carol Dweck about intelligence having
you know two perspectives on the one
hand if you think the growth mindset
believes actually forget about smart and
dumb that doesn’t exist we exists is the
attitude to learning of perseverance and
resilience and trying again you can’t do
it yet so it’s not about having a
pattern in bills Jeanne now we find an
onus of the school we need to embrace
who was defeated by English and he
decided he was watching this fire day in
the corner which were an exploiter kept
on swinging and kept on screen and it
came up with the Magnificent phrase if
at first you don’t succeed try try again
and that’s all overheard try try again
try again
the problem was I even got the gene I
hadn’t got the genes that didn’t matter
about trying to gain because I’m God I
couldn’t do it you know there was what’s
the point in trying again what we need
to do we need to slow down now I know
I’m a lone voice saying yes we need to
slow down in our schools address we need
to slow down take that for off of the
wing tunnel that we create where the way
we talk about mass and we don’t do
anything we don’t do
isn’t that time thing that what we value
in Matthew speed and if you’re fickle
fast then you’re a fabulous
mathematician well there are lots of
other things it doesn’t have to be with
that speed there’s also all sorts of
research that suggests that anxiety
interferes with your working memory and
there’s lots of very current research
this this as well it’s disappeared
but basically anxiety interferes with
manipulation the mums and she gets in
the way of working memory there’s not so
recent studies to suggest that so what
we normally see if we know that speed
has an adverse effect why is it you go
into schools and the teachers appraising
children for being fast and everything
is about speed think about that because
that’s that’s prevalent in a lot of
places I think and this is my personal
view that it harks back to our
industrial age at colonial past where we
needed workers to churn out to work in
factories and offices and all through
the other tire I think you saw Bob
Cratchit types that needed to be fast
and efficient and we’ve still kind of
gone as a hangover that thing where
maths we know what computers we
calculate who doesn’t there’s a lots of
other things we know the anxiety that
starts with times tables and the
research suggests that it’s not just my
experience then let’s think again about
it as we turn it off generations and
generations of children from a wonderful
exciting beautiful subject so my
antidote
these disappeared but we’re indeed oh
he’s daily daily mindset a sort of daily
dose of nineteen schools until I
understand to slow down let’s think
about being creatively master
about the beauty of medicines a
wonderful exploration yes it is
difficult yes it is hard you might come
up against dings you know that that’s
what the nature of might see is humanity
is a tricky subject to me to note that
they need to know in this world of
prefixes of instant information Google
internet actually lets you know all the
cards and make lots of mistakes forget
to keep on so wonderful new ideas we
need to think about children connect
deeper with they’re doing it so it stays
with them and also you know the other
things that are speed there are lots of
other things in maths already quite
important you know you don’t I don’t
know means of 20th century philosopher
or think of that who’s known for 12
years in two weeks
just while I’m not quite wide open
create this thing about their speed ease
of everything speaks the most important
thing
yes it’s important but it’s important
along with everything else
by working together by organizing
looking for patterns like generalizing
by making mistakes like going up blind
alleys all those things that are
important not just speed so he said he’s
a he’s a key aspect is one aspect so
together take contain there today and I
believe that we will kill the virus
