Making of a comedian | Anshu Mor | TEDxFMS

I love noon before I start I just want
to quote a very famous guy who said this
can you guys read everybody right it
says if you have a crick in the neck let
everyone know ok and this was said by me
in the morning today because I have a
crick in my neck and if you see me
turning beard Lee that’s probably
because of that so I just want to let
you know right so this is not how I
normally move around but today I am
alright just to just to begin the entire
show you know there was this nice
introduction out here about me coming
from the corporate life I’m going to
give you a flavor of what happened after
I quit my job left corporate life in a
sense it was this what had happened to
me what you see up back on the slide for
44 years after being born I was
attempting to be somebody right went to
college did my MBA started working got
my promotions kept working kept for more
money better recognition etc for 44
years that happened till last year where
in one night I decided to drop
everything and become an absolute nobody
alright and that happened because I went
and watch this movie called tamasha I
don’t know why they make such movies I
really don’t know but they shouldn’t but
I saw that movie and the way next day I
went to office and I design right to
follow my passion and this is what I’m
going to talk about in the next few
minutes would be about what happened
after that
after becoming an absolute nobody hoping
then to become somebody in life at the
age of 44 45 I’m gonna use a weird kind
of slide so just bear with me I’m gonna
use a lot of dates again so this is Jan
18 2016 this was the first day after I
had left my company I picked up my bag
in the morning as I used to always but
then I didn’t have a job so I went to a
coffee shop and I sat there and I said
okay this is the start of my startup
life so to say and you know I’ve been to
that coffee shop many times ok many
times in my corporate life I’ve been
there and done meetings etc but I went
there and I went to the counter and I
asked I asked that lady I said can I
have a cappuccino please
and she said of course and I said how
much and she said 175 rupees and I was
like what you know this was the first
time I realized the cost of a cappuccino
not that I couldn’t pay but I had
suddenly become a startup guy okay so I
was worried about everything and I was
like I’m supposed to sit here every day
now and I’m gonna be having 175 rupees
coffee every single day and that was
that was really really weird for me that
was the first moment and I still
remember that moment very vividly
because that’s the first time I realized
I am a startup nobody’s gonna pay money
to me now I’m not gonna get a salary
anymore I you know I need to do
something for money to come in right and
I didn’t know at that point of time
really what I was supposed to do so a
quick one for you on on how I left
Microsoft I knew that I would be on
stage I knew that I would somehow be
related to the entertainment industry
but on this day when I went to Starbucks
I had no idea what I’m gonna do my
entire business plans honestly speaking
no exaggeration my business plan read
like this let’s do something in
entertainment space okay without any
understanding or knowledge okay so when
that one 75 rupees happen it kind of hit
me really really hard but then I start
sitting there okay and I said sitting
there I said you know first order of
business was to write because as a
comedian you should write comedy okay so
I started writing and I start writing
this web series I don’t know why I
thought that suddenly I will go and
produce this web series and I will
become very very famous I thought that
was the easiest part to do it so I
started writing these web series and I
spent many many months and weeks there
just sitting at Starbucks every single
day for about six seven hours I would
sit observe people and write the web
series so I had written a character the
character was based on my life
you know so simple but a guy who left
corporate life to become a comedian and
I said let’s do a web series around that
all right so I started doing that well
the interesting thing that happened
during that time was that I used to
initially in the first two weeks I guess
I would get calls from a lot of my ex
colleagues or my friends right would
call up and ask me how things are but as
I went along in the third week fourth
week next month those calls stopped
coming okay because suddenly I was
irrelevant in the scheme of things and
that’s the harsh reality of it right I
wasn’t working anywhere nobody had any
business with me and those calls really
stopped coming and then I would just sit
alone and I was wonder where I would get
my first two rupee from without knowing
how the industry actually works
that was my second learning right second
learning about the craft of stand-up
comedy in terms of understanding the
audiences Friday was a different
audience
they got my jokes Tuesday was a very
different audience that came right and
that’s when I realized that you can’t
just write material and go perform it
everywhere and anywhere right you have
to write Universal material the material
needs to be tested a hundred times
before you go up on the show to be
confident that that material would work
right that was my second learning then
oh so this was May last year and then I
start performing I start getting my ten
minutes slots on a regular basis I would
sometimes get about 15 to 20 minutes to
perform it somebody else’s show in Jan
2017 Jan 2017 I was given an opportunity
to go and perform at canvas slav Club in
Mumbai now that’s the mecca of stand-up
comedy okay it’s a room which is like
320 seater room and that’s where comedy
was born in this country so to say this
kind of comedy okay so I was given an
opportunity to perform and I spoke to a
few comedian friends and I was on the
lineup so I was on the poster okay along
with two other comedians one of them was
a guy called Daniel Fernandez right so
if you would have heard about him now
Daniel Fernandez is one of the big
comedians in the country and he’s very
very famous he’s also very young guy and
he has a huge fan following so a bunch
of comedians in the deli circuit told me
that you will
be killed on stage because all of them
have come to watch Daniel Fernandez
alright and you are like 40-plus and the
crowd there will be almost 18 to 20 and
they will not understand what you’re
saying and you’re gonna have the worst
week possible okay I was performing
every night for a week along with Daniel
Fernandez and rightly so I went there
the first evening we have this show I
went up on stage before Daniel Fernandez
obviously but I went up on stage and I
was very very conscious very conscious
okay because I knew I saw the crowd
there all young kids sitting there with
starry-eyed waiting for Daniel Fernandez
to come right and I was very conscious
and for some reason I don’t know why I
changed the way I was delivering I
started using words which were not in my
set just to connect with the younger
audience right and rightly so I bombed
okay dramatically a few people were
laughing but I bombed overall a bomb by
the way now in our in our industry is
when you have a really bad show light
dead silence kind of a show so anyway I
bombed I went back to the hotel that
night and I was thinking to myself I
said what went wrong I was doing fine
I’ve done this material before in daily
circuit and people were laughing what
went wrong here and then I realized my
third big learning in this entire piece
that I wasn’t being myself on stage how
many times have we gotten up on stage
and realized that you try to be somebody
else you try to talk like somebody else
because you’re on stage and that’s what
I was doing because I was worried that
the fan base is all Daniel Fernandez fan
base right and the next day next year I
decided that irrespective of who’s
sitting in 18 year old or a 14 year old
I will do the material the way I want to
do it right the way I have practiced it
for hours together and I went ahead and
did that
and I killed that show killed means I
had a great show that evening then I had
a great show next evening ok brilliant
show for the same crowd and this is what
happened with Daniel Fernandez this is
what he tweeted on the third day and for
those who can’t read it
he said just going to say how cool it is
that Anshu Moore who is just six months
into his comedy career is killing it at
canvas love love right that was my third
learning just being myself
was so important to the craft that I was
getting into and frankly in every stage
of life that you would be whether you’re
a student or working or in corporate
life or wherever right being yourself is
the best that you can possibly do right
and that was my huge learning that
happened there the recognition in the
and and the stuff that you get from the
audiences the love that you get it’s
almost like a drug okay you take that
away for a day and you feel very very
weird and I was not used to it in any
case right it’s not that I was born in
this industry I was just not used to it
and I went into this very deep cycle at
that point of time trying to figure out
how do I come out of it and suddenly I
couldn’t for days and weeks together I
was getting up on shows I was refusing
shows imagine I’d worked so hard to get
these shows I was refusing because
suddenly I was not confident I did a
corporate show where there was dead
silence in the room a corporate show
which used to be my forte because I was
from that world right so I would do good
comedy for them because they in that and
Mixon was completely missing for me and
that’s the time when I started looking
at myself okay very very deep because I
had lots of time you know in any case so
I started thinking about what I was
doing why I was doing it and that’s when
I realized another big learning stand-up
comedy was not about being a celebrity
okay stand-up comedy was about getting
up on stage and saying things that are
deep and personal to you stand-up comedy
is baring your soul on stage and making
people laugh and for that brief
one-month period I had taken my eye off
that ball
and I had started looking at stand-up
comedy as this whole celebrity status
that I would achieve very very soon
right and that was a huge huge learning
for me in May and June I spent two
months I stopped doing everything I
almost gave up all my shows and this is
this May and June I gave up all my shows
I was doing a bit of consultancy with a
few agencies just helping them with
stuff that you know they would pay me
money for I stopped all of that I bent
back I bought a diary a very big diary
and I went back and I said I’m gonna
write comedy one more time right so I
gave up whatever I had done till then I
released all that material on YouTube
which meant that I couldn’t perform it
again and I had to write a new one or
special now again to give you a context
with most of the comedians writing a
one-hour special means about six to
seven months of work okay but I decided
that by June I would be back on stage
saying things in a very different way
the way I want to say it as a comedian
not as a celebrity not as somebody who’s
getting photographed and you know
appearing in newspapers but somebody who
would want to really say things and
that’s when I spent tremendous amount of
hours just writing non-stop I would
write sometimes for 7 to 8 hours in a
day
I just keep writing not typing not
dictating writing on a notebook right
kept writing kept writing just to work
on my material and in June I came up
with my new special called wait there’s
more okay and the whole idea of naming
the special wait there’s more was first
it kind of resonates with my surname
second the idea was that whatever I have
done if you thought that was good enough
then please wait right there is more
now the comedian is coming out all right
so I was when I turned reinventing
reimagining or read whatever I couldn’t
think of a third word so I just put it
up there but I was reinventing and
that’s that was my last learning right I
mean till date at least which was about
finding your voice who are you and this
is not about stand-up comedy think of
your sphere right whether you are a
student or Ian’s corporate life who are
you what do you represent when you walk
into a room what do people look at and
think about you not in terms of an
impression but what would come out of
your mouth what is that brain thing that
would come out that people would
associate with and it is such a huge
thing and it is ironic that I had spent
18 years in corporate life without
knowing who I was 18 years can you
imagine 18 years because I was just
pushing for next promotion and the
bigger job and a bigger salary and a
bigger car but I wasn’t really
introspecting of who I was and it took
me two months to sit down write about
myself I wrote about things that you
know about me like just about how I
think why do I think like that why do I
behave like this and I wrote all of that
just to figure out who I am to represent
that person on stage and this is what
happened when I came up with the next
special wait there’s more now I’m on a
tour doing this special again and again
now
and kind of going well so in summary
very quickly these are my learnings okay
these are my learnings and I just go one
by one and just kind of relate it back
to whatever I mentioned the first one
was when I sat in Starbucks it was about
running my own shop okay and this is
very important especially for those who
are in corporate life even for students
out here
this was my huge learning running my own
shop can you imagine if you have a kid
on Aikido Khan and that is your duquan
right that is your shop would you not do
everything possible to run that shop you
would you won’t blame a manager you
won’t say the company policy is bad you
won’t say I am demotivated because my
manager is bad you would just run the
setup and analyze this is what I was
doing with my entire life now I didn’t
have anybody that I could blame I would
get up in the morning and I had to move
the needle right so one big learning
second just staying focused that list of
10 things trust me just try it I would
just love everyone to do this you know
if you can just make that list go back
to that list every single time put it on
your phone if you have to right but go
back to that list and just focus on that
10 things the simplest 10 things that
will help you in your job or whatever
profession you are in right that was the
second big learning third was just
learning the art and craft right from
writing jokes to performing jokes I have
just you know I have tried to learn from
people who are like 21 year old
comedians I’ve tried to learn from 16
year old comedians I wouldn’t have done
that in my corporate life actually you
know because I had reached a certain
stage sure I was heading a business if a
young kid from college came and joined
the company he was supposed to learn
from me not the other way round right
and that’s the mentality you build in
corporate life but here I was learning
from even a 16 or 17 year old coming up
on stage I would look at something that
he did and I’m like why can’t I do this
why can’t I think like that how did he
construct a joke
how was he we know moving around and
stuff like that right so that was the
other thing that I learned of taking
risk whether announcing a solo or
announcing or show off your own or just
doing what you know I started doing
another big thing and I would I always
keep saying this right in today’s world
it’s very very different from what it
used to be 20 years ago today you can
pick up whatever you like you will make
money in it hundred percent you remember
when I mean a lot of you are very very
young but when b1 in school in college
length which is like two three decades
ago you know people used to say that a
good party Nina to check you to con
colligate that’s what they used to say
today there is a child somebody said hi
a child I am a cold at all
that guy is multi-million dollar
fundings right now right so you can pick
up and do whatever you want just the
ability to take risk and not worry about
where your next EMI would come from or
where you would make money from just
forget all that just jump into it you
will make money that’s the world we live
in staying sane you know if every time
somebody would come and take a selfie I
would really you know I would think I’m
like Shahrukh Khan or somebody seriously
you know if people would stop me saying
you know I I’ve seen you except when it
used to go to your head it does even in
corporate life it does right every time
you do a great presentation you get the
next you know next big appraisal or you
get that promotion or the next level it
goes to your head you suddenly start
thinking you’re very big bigger than the
rest of the folks you are with and
that’s such a huge mistake
because you really are not like none of
us is bigger than the next guy who’s
sitting you know next to you then we are
not and that was a huge learning finding
my voice again keep saying that finding
the voice is so so important in my field
obviously it is the most important thing
but in every other field just looking at
what what you represent right who are
you is so important and that gives
clarity of thought in terms of where you
want to be in the first place line and
as you would have seen this entire
presentation was a little haphazard and
that’s because I made the presentation
in the morning and that’s been my last
learning the latest learning has been
next time you’re doing TEDx prepare
better all right so that’s it for me
thank you so much
you
