having great day so far my name is
Ronnie Gunny
I am originated from Jakarta I was born
and raised and I’ve been living in
Singapore for the last 10 years while I
also work as professional animator
working on this projects I am very
thankful and grateful to be involved in
this project that has been released a
worldwide and has been viewed by
millions of audience around the world so
today I’m going to talk about being an
animator and what is it that we pretty
much do so I’m pretty sure a lot of
people have heard the term many mirror
and and I think it’s quite a holiday
like a popular kind of term but what
most people don’t realize is that any
mirror is kind of similar like actors we
are responsible to bring life into the
characters inside of a film so the
difference is that while actors act out
the performance in front of the camera
while it’s rolling and recording we any
mirrors need to channel those
performance through medium so as it was
straight it here this medium is what we
often call digital model or we can say
puppet which basically is a mathematical
calculation computation done inside of a
computer of course and it it’s it’s just
a spherical object it has no life it has
no soul and our main responsibility as
any mirror is to
to breathe life into them so that we can
make them appear to be alive
we also have to make sure that the
performance that we are giving is
suitable to the character so for example
if we have a scene where a person
accidentally accidentally bumped into
his friend his old close friend on the
street the performance will be different
if we have the person to be a more open
and outgoing character rather than if
the person is a more shy or close and
yeah a bit awkward kind of person maybe
the open and outgoing person would be
shouting his friend’s name from across
the street like hey Johnny long time no
see man how are you doing blah blah
while getting attention from all people
surrounding him and which he doesn’t
care at all because that’s how he is and
that’s the performance that he’s doing
but rather if we’re talking about like
the other guy who is more shy and more
close he probably just gonna make eye
contact from cross the street and then
just give a little head gesture and and
that’s already big enough for him to say
hi right so yeah those are the
difference type of performance that we
have to think and beside and design of
which which is the most durable to give
to the characters so aside from the
performance we also have to deal with
the physicality of their motion so as I
mentioned earlier the digital model is a
nonliving object it won’t move until
someone is moving them right so it is
our task to give such a movement that
that is believable that is replicating
life so that the audience when they saw
it in a big screen they become convinced
that it is actually
they’re actually these puppets is
actually moving by their own will not
because of someone moving them from
behind of a computer in order to do this
we any mirrors have to really really
understand about the physicality of
motions and most importantly the human
body mechanics works in real life so
that we can then apply those
understanding all those concepts upon to
the digital puppets so here’s what we
basically do there’s an image of three
different person here which has each of
them has different characters as well
we’re going to start with the the left
one so a guy with with with bigger mass
I say with with heavier weight they they
tend to have like their their center of
mass of their body is tend to be lower
which makes them to appear like from the
way they stand it’s more grounded it’s
bringing all those body mass a bit lower
and closer to the ground and also if you
notice this type of person also need to
tend to make a wider stance because the
area of their body mass creates larger
fall area so that needs to be supported
by the by the very both of their likes
to as a supportive structure
imagine if with that white area and he’s
standing like the person is standing
like more of a cloud close like every
time we get pushed but just by a little
it will make him becoming really
unbalanced and could like fall over and
then on this second example the guy in
the left which is visually more I’d say
athletic it can it tends to make them
their posture to be more heroic
like if I mention earlier this guy on
the left as a lower-body
center of gravity this guy lattic ones
it tends to have like a higher one that
the center of their body masses is
relatively higher which which around in
his chest which you can see makes his
posture to be more like open chested and
they tend to move like more upright and
then leading with the chest kind of
motion so this this kind of physicality
is important if we talking about have to
animate like either the character is a
hero character or is it these are normal
people or is it like a villain or how
how to appear themselves through the
motion to build those characters and the
pose if we’re talking about post body
pose it’s not only about physical like
this guy for example from all the three
guys he’s the one who physically the
skinniest but from the posture is the
most heaviest it seems it’s like all all
of his body is dragging him down which
makes him like super bended on the spine
this also reflects that a post doesn’t
only determine the physicality but also
about the mental state or the emotional
state or the psychology psychological
state of a person so we can assume by
visual of course we can’t just randomly
ask and big are you ok but we can see
from the physical that maybe this guy is
having a bad day or a rough day which
makes him kind of like a bit depressed
or something that makes his body during
that time feels like much more heavier
than than than how it is in normal
situation also we have to understand the
balance concept that’s happening within
a motion like for example this guy
his his doing his spinning action and
all the time that is spinning in in
spinning movement his point of balance
is located at the at the point where he
planted his hand as soon as the frame
stops as soon as the the rotation is no
longer working the guy will fall so yeah
there is a different concept of balance
when a person is in motion compared to a
person is standing still no I’m trying
to I’m trying to illustrate or do a
demonstration like how we have to really
tackle or understand this concept of
physicality I’m going to explain what is
happening actually happening within a
human walk so from a standing position
which is balanced I’m standing really
bad in a balance in a really balanced
pose here my body weight drops along in
between my both legs as my support so
from this poise I will never be able to
be moved because I’m balanced what I
have to do is create a momentum and and
creating momentum often or not even
often always got to do and relate it to
gravity so just by leading my body over
here this portion of my body now is
being affected by the gravity which is
going to create a momentum that goes
this way and the more I pushed that way
it would create motion right so a human
walk basically in the simplest form is
the control fall we as we grow up as
human being we get the more sense and
understanding how we how we how we
continuously falling ourselves and
catching them so that we don’t trip
see again example from standing balance
pose I’m gonna fall myself into the
direction that I want to walk say form
walk backwards I’m going to lean
backwards like so and then I have to
catch myself so that I don’t fall and if
we will go forward you wouldn’t lean
forward and this going to keep going
until I until I decide to stop and what
happened when I stopped I then throw my
legs further away so that the momentum
that goes that way is being against by
the by the muscle of my legs and that’s
what actually gonna make me stop so yeah
it’s a bit more complicated and I
wouldn’t say boring it’s it’s it’s
really interesting if we’re really
getting into it and we have to really
master this thing in order to create a
believable performance and animation now
I’m going to show you a short animation
clip that I did which pretty much can
summarize everything that I did I just
how I find him enemies in stock with
audio you sit there with a mass murderer
a mass murderer your heart rate is
jacked your hand steady how I feel
I didn’t start by finding a performance
he said yeah after the character with a
mass murderer what is it that you say
your heart rate is whom that he is
saying and what is actually being done
during the conversation is steady how I
feel after that I put those poses in
those performance you see the puppet
mass murder it’s looking at how dead
right now can we we definitely can tell
that someone is moving them steady but
as the perfect regress now we have you
more life into it he said I have to play
with the free mass like we we decide
what mass my facial and lip sing the
harmony is checked your hand and by the
end if my steady mission succeeded how I
feel
how I feel you sit there with a mass
murderer a mass murderer your heart rate
is jacked your hand steady you will no
longer think thank you you will no
longer think that someone is moving that
puppet from behind of a computer but
rather than it’s actually behaving
responding to a person in front behind
of a camera telling the memories that
his experience in his previous life
situations so yeah that’s pretty much
what our creative side of being an
animator but now I’m going to tell you
that the journey I have in becoming an
any mirror isn’t all well and smooth
there were definitely a lot of
challenges during along the way and we
will try to entertain you with the story
so that is me a much younger version of
me I’ve always liked to draw on any
kinds of mediums apparently including my
mom’s wall and then as I grew up I also
started to to fix up the reading comic
books right I’m sure every one of us
also most of the time have this face in
life where we like to read stories we
like to look at pictures and drawings
for me I was really amazed by the
drawings and the art of it and also
quite really deeply absorbed by the
storytelling that is happening inside of
the comic itself and then carrying on
this all of this process kind of
triggered my art sense and I’m starting
and I was starting to fantasizing to be
I’m an artist for when I grow up to be
to be my profession but then what like
like what happened to most childhood
dreams of course reality started to kick
in when when was the time for me to
decide like which major should I choose
and what profession that I want to be
and so on and so forth I was being faced
by this social situation where where the
the argument is is saying that arts is
nothing more than just a child’s play
especially if we’re talking like a time
in Indonesia in the context like ten
years ahead from now I saw it before it
is even more hard for us to propose an
idea that we want to become an artist
because the major opinions would say
that art couldn’t couldn’t provide is
not a real job and it’s definitely
couldn’t provide stability either
financial or whatever but then I have to
deal with it and then I didn’t want to
fight it as in like I didn’t want to
make a scene and and and argue and
create a fire or something but I have to
come up with the solution so whenever
you encounter problems we have to find a
way around it and and then instead of
clashing with it but we have to make an
effort of dealing with it more
persuasively and which I did I then
thought that maybe if I combine arts and
engineering we can get
architecture so that’s what I decided
maybe if I propose this concept they
could see me becoming an engineer but I
also can channel my arts actually which
I initially wanted so I did that and
then I went to university of in media
and and become a Bachelor of
architecture but during the time that I
studied it didn’t seem to go along like
the way I expected and I was sad and
then I was again lost in direction and
then I thought that I really think that
architecture wasn’t really for me but it
wasn’t all bad because luckily during my
study in architecture we got to know
about this thing called 3d softwares
which we heavily used to visualize our
designs assignment and then I then
discovered that this 3d software is
actually being heavily more being more
used heavily in animation and visual
effects industry and then I guess from
then on that that I kind of like decided
and and triggered my my hope again on
towards arts okay there’s still a chance
here it’s not a dead end I’m gonna keep
looking for like which way to go
and then I decided that okay I’m gonna
try my best with this opportunity that I
have so I said my heart I decided okay
I’m gonna finish my study as fast as I
can
and I’m going to learn animation and
become an animal but with that decision
itself after I graduated I still being
faced by rough process which which by
then there wasn’t any really school or
educational institution that can really
teach things about animation or how to
become an animator and I have to get
everything all by myself I get
all the things that my hands can get so
that I can practice day and night and
until finally I finished my any mission
portfolio by then and then I started
just bracing myself throwing them those
application everywhere to to all this
animation studios that has openings
until one day I finally got my first job
and becoming an any mirror to join
animation studio in bottom and that is
when my that was when my career as a
now I’m going to take us back to this
image this image really reminds me
strongly about the struggle I have when
I was studying it when I was trying to
make myself to become an animator and I
still feels that it’s still relevant to
the situation right now where a lot of
people who I know that they want to make
a career in animation or wanna try they
still struggling to find like which
channel or which proper way to do it and
by by this situation I kind of like
motivated and think that maybe they they
can be a better way they can be a better
situation and I’ve been working in the
industry for 10 years what is actually
that I can do to to give something or to
be a part of the solution of the problem
and then I decided that maybe I can do
something that contributing to the local
cg communities or CG means computer
graphic or animation communities it’s I
think it’s time for me to give back what
experience to the community so that I
can at least help some people to start
off their their journey
therefore I initiated oh so yeah that
was me struggling every day a night so
in in the year 2014 I initiated
something that I called banker Anna
Massey Bank on a massive calm it’s an
online course animation course workshop
Indonesia and participant to who wants
to study animation and really make it a
career out of that
so here’s a little preview of how we do
our things
we do everything online so the teachers
can be elsewhere and the students can be
anywhere especially with this time which
all technology and internet really
support us to be able to be me teaching
my the class of consisting so I started
by giving them explanation of material
concept and then we continued on giving
them assignments and exercises which
actually a simulation so that they can
practice and apply all that knowledge
into the art world
[Music]
and then once they do the assignment we
can create like an online system online
review system where we
giving inputs on their works what can be
better what can be pushed and then which
direction is not moving and where do
they need to go to make it better and
they are
so again it’s all about getting the
Philip the least ability into the motion
of the physically feel needs to be right
all the performance to one
everything being split up so this is the
student
allow me to post my presentation today
by saying that it is very important for
you to find what your passion is and
truly believes in it because once you do
so once you’ve found it
no matter how many obstacles and
challenge that comes and hit you along
the way you’re just gonna fight it
you’re gonna make around it make way
around it and make it work and learning
any thank you for your time [Applause]
