Make Impact with Experiential Learning | Ravindra Stephen Goonetilleke | TEDxEdUHK

[Applause]
thank you very much Dylan
it’s a pleasure to be here so I’m gonna
talk about experiential learning and I’m
gonna take you back to the mid 60s
so here’s a little boy who in whose
house all the furniture was custom made
today you’ll think you know it’s very
expensive to get custom-made furniture
down but at that time custom-made
furniture was the cheapest way to go so
there was a carpenter who would come to
this little boy’s house and he would
make different things beds tables
wardrobes whatever the father wanted in
that house and this little boy would go
watch this carpenter make these
different things he would go as a
carpenter you know why he would do
certain things a certain way and he
learned a lot from that and carpenter
goes home at 5:00 in the evening leaves
all his tools in the in his father’s
house and for this boy it becomes his
playground he uses Saul’s chisels makes
his own stuff and here are some of the
stuff that he made safety was
self-taught this is experiential
learning you watch someone do something
and then you start doing it this is
learning by doing this is something
which is very important today it’s
nothing new but something very important
today I’ll tell you why later on so
here’s something that he and his friends
used to have fun they spent a lot of
time using this device today is called
an elf tester but it’s a motor skill
tester so you see this ring you take
this ring through I’m pretty sure some
of you here have used this before take
this ring through and if the ring
touches amaze that bulb lights up means
that’s the end of your turn so it’s a
next person stand you know today when
you play video games you have a level
one level two and so on he had the same
thing which is level one level two by
using different sizes of rings so it
became that after the task became more
difficult to do so that’s a level one
level two exactly it’s the same thing
that goes on today by the way
before I go on I want to tell you you’re
looking at a bigger and older version of
that little boy I’ve had the experience
of learning things by watching people
you know in that day and time we had
books books that were very expensive we
didn’t have any TV at home we didn’t
have any of the eye things that you have
today you know iPods iPhones iPads and
there was no one to say I paid and there
weren’t any things we didn’t have any
you know ebooks he copies he banking we
didn’t have any of that all we had were
books and books were expensive so for us
to get the information was very
difficult you think today getting music
is very easy getting music was very
difficult at the time so where did we
get all the information we had to get
all the information from our teachers
from our parents and our friends you
know I’ve been very lucky to have had
some fascinating teachers I learnt a lot
from them but at the same time I had
some weaker teachers as well and I
learned a lot from those weaker teachers
I learned how not to teach today I teach
I learned how not to teach this is
something you got to know if you don’t
know how not to teach you will never
know how to teach you know a lot of the
students today don’t go to class you
know why they say hey it’s a boring
class I’m I don’t learn anything it’s
not challenging I fall asleep go to that
class go to the class and challenge your
teachers this is what you really need to
do ask questions ask questions ask the
teacher to tell you stories you know
telling stories is very important
because you will remember a lot of
things you know you need context to
remember if you don’t have context
you’re not going to remember anything
it’s just memorizing everything but the
moment you put context into it you
remember for a long time this is basic
of long term memory so go to those
classes that are very boring make sure
you ask good questions I’ve got into
trouble asking a lot of questions I tell
you that another day so people say
lifelong learning
is cradle-to-grave to me is not its
cradle-to-cradle you teach others you
have there are future educators here you
need to transfer that knowledge you need
to tell students how not to teach and
how to teach make sure that is
communicated very effectively this is
very important you need to have these
extremes that’s when you really
understand how to do things right now
the mean new millennium came I’m gonna
fast forward here everything changed
something called a smartphone came about
what happened
everything is catalogued today on the
Internet but for you to find information
you need to ask the right question if
you’ve not been asking the wise you go
to the class and ask the teacher why
does it happen that way or why does this
thing work this way why don’t you tell
me something else if you not been asking
those why questions you’ll never know
what to ask when you go onto Google ok
Google will answer you only if you ask
the right question if you don’t know
what to ask Google’s gonna give you some
garbage you can get million hits you
don’t know what to look at so you have
to really know what to ask this is very
important
so in my time I had a basically a very
straight line path we had a few tracks
you got on the track and you knew
exactly where you were going
you knew where a destination was when I
was six years old I knew I wanted to be
an engineer and today I am or at least I
was but today it’s a different story
what’s the problem it’s a convoluted
path there are millions of paths you can
take students today don’t know where to
go they always say what if I choose this
what if I make the wrong decision what
if I go this way
what if I do this this is like you know
putting a wide-angle lens on a camera
you don’t you’ll lose seeing so many
things but you need to focus what I tell
my students is doesn’t matter
forget the what if
you ask yourself and do what you really
like to do this is the most important
thing if you do what you like to do
you’ll be the best at it
once you’re the best at it there’s going
to be no one else who can do what you
can do so be motivated get that best
thing done this is what’s important so
to do that you know we need some
creativity now what’s happened today one
of the biggest problems is people don’t
have time why because of this smart
device that you have you’re always
looking at it you walk like this you
know get into a MTR get into a bus you
know every months like this you know you
don’t see anyone looking at each other
there’s no time for any creativity but
there’s still one place where you can
have creativity you know where it’s in
the Java every time you take a shower
you have this brilliant ideas come and
go come and go come and go come and go
okay these are like this this monkey
jumping from one branch to another okay
because these are just settling in and
out in and out in and out you need to
hold on to some of these brilliant ideas
that you get and work on it this is one
important thing but something else is
happening today you know we know what
manufacturers today are coming out with
waterproof phones and these people are
now taking the waterproof phone into the
shower can you believe it it’s
unbelievable you don’t have any time you
need to make that time so you know they
say there are four pillars of learning
learning to know learn to do learn to be
learn to live together look at this very
carefully okay they say it’s four
pillars for me it’s not really pillars
to me it’s a hierarchy it doesn’t matter
focus on the four of these four things
basically refer to yourself to myself
okay to each one that’s what it refers
to
you know if when it when you are doing
everything for yourself you know you
lose the brilliance of that you need to
look at the other person as well you
need to really inspire others you need
to think about the others this is
something that is very important that
you need to do so when you start
bringing the other person into the
picture whoever it may be then life
changes you see how happy someone is
when you have delivered something to
that person which is meaningful to that
person
so I said ask those why questions you
see you begins with a why so you need to
have someone else you learn by doing and
help someone else in that process this
is something that you really need to do
you know I teach this course called
design thinking which is a very very hot
topic today with one of the finest
academic institutions in China and where
we take 20 students from the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology 20
students technology science and business
students and put them together with
twenty arts and design students you know
what happens the first few days they
don’t know how to talk to each other
imagine technology scientists how can
they talk with artists and designers no
way and they go to talk with them for
eight hours what are they going to talk
with you know nothing to talk with they
look the other way but after like three
days they realize how to communicate
they realize how to do things together
they become a team and they come up with
brilliant stuff I’m really lucky to be
teaching this course and here’s one
example of that so we were doing a
project for the elderly people now the
elderly people are people who have been
put away and you know why they’ve been
put away because when you around 30 or
40 years of age your parents don’t
listen to you your children don’t listen
to you and your spouse doesn’t listen to
you they begin to wonder what the hell
am i doing in this world you know and
then you start putting away each one is
like okay parents you’re gonna go to
this elderly home you can stay there so
that you listen to them so we’ve gone to
some of these elderly care centers and
talk to these people very sad
they have no one to communicate you know
you say what about your kids or the kids
don’t have time I call them they’re not
available they say I’ll call you back
later
and hang up never calls back later so
they basically live a very very pathetic
life so we said okay we got to do
something for these people so here’s a
device that this particular group built
there are two of these devices one in
the sons or daughters home and one in
the parents chaos center daycare center
wherever T’s and what really happens is
you know it’s very simple but if there’s
a lot of Technology built into that you
just press a button and you record a
message and these these are gold petals
by the way these will bloom just like a
flower whenever there is a message these
petals will bloom so one sip is blooms
the son or daughter comes home they see
this has bloomed which means there’s a
message listened to the message and
reply reply that message they press a
button and reply that message we said
hey this is technology what have you
done you know this is not good enough
you need to have that emotion built into
this so that’s what you see on the right
side there which is a screen what does a
screen do the screen has a picture of
their parents so what happens sons or
daughters or they go out partying come
back late it’s like okay I’ll reply that
message later on okay go to sleep early
morning they’re late to work because
this at a late night you know get up
rush to work now didn’t reply the
message this kind of cycle goes on after
a few days what happens is on that
display you know where they have the
parents picture would gradually fade
gradually fade until it goes off becomes
black what does that imply your parents
they’re passed away you know you sense
the feeling of loss you sense that hey
I’m not doing this right something is
wrong I need to pay attention to my
parents I need to spend and communicate
with my parents so this is this is where
you bring in emotion so this is doing
and helping someone else you know
improve their life
this is making impact with experiential
learning and before I close I want to
tell you another story I told you a
story about a little boy which you are
seeing right now but
– lets story about a little girl so
there was this mother and father and his
daughter of years and so the mother gave
a painting to the daughter and and the
daughter looked at it and said what is
this this is crap and mother mother was
like all right you go first find out how
much this is what before you trash this
so daughter was like okay you know what
kids do today right first thing is
Instagram picture puts on Instagram gets
holy Powe responses from my friends what
is this crap
I knew this goes to the Father dad
everyone thinks this picture is crap
what should I do well your mother said
go find out how much is what right all
right all right all right so it takes
more pictures and puts it on eBay
remember those I think sandy things that
you have now Instagram eBay puts it on
eBay auctions it after one week someone
else was $25 oh crap 225 dollars not bad
right luckily for her there was a
cooperative art fair in a neighborhood
so she takes this nice tablecloth takes
it to Texas picture there puts it on
there and displays it beautifully and
within like minutes there was a lady
walking up to her looking dead why to
eye contact it’s like where did you get
that picture where we deal mom steal
this picture it’s like why I want it I
pay you ten thousand dollars for it what
ten thousand dollars for this it’s like
why remember all those why questions you
need to ask those teachers of their
boring classes very important why
because this is the sixth painting my
mother had a collection of five this is
a six painting that our grandma did and
she’s been looking for this sixth paint
for like five years right now she’s in
the hospital she’s in the last stages of
her life and if she sees this picture
she may recover this is a classic
validation of what Henry Ford said where
do you think you can or you can’t you
are right
at first she said hey this is crap
so trash it but later on she took the
effort to find out that it’s really what
something more than what she thought so
keep that in mind this is very important
now what is that painting that painting
is you you are that painting you will
feel your crap your friends will think
you’re absolute trash but you need to
find the person to whom you’re really
worth this is not easy this is going to
take some time
you’re going to put in a lot of effort
to do that you may have to inspire a lot
of people in the process of doing that
but the day you find that you will
really find how much you’re really worth
and that’s gonna make a big change in
your life so educators future educators
here put in that time that you really
need and you’ll find your that’s
expanding that someone has been looking
