what is the meaning of home for
generations that struggle with the
question as a kid I used to imagine the
perfect house in the boxes that I played
in boxes
I was literally obsessed with them as a
kid I’d go into grocery stores they’d be
there for free me jumping into them a
little bit of trouble when I wouldn’t
listen I could put them over my head and
pretend that I was invisible or I could
just hide inside of it and act like
nothing was happening boxes I could
imagine
the safe spaces in my mind that would
help me make sense of the meaning of
home a term that has been ambiguous in
that I’ve struggled with the for a
number of years boxes I enjoyed playing
in boxes until one day I woke up and I
couldn’t tell the difference between the
boxes that I played it in the boxes that
the world defined me as boxes the
socioeconomic status the color of our
skin the gender the body that we wear
the cities and neighborhoods that we
live in boxes that tell us that that’s
all that we are except the formal term
for that
social location or technically it’s the
boxes that we learn to define the
concept of home as as early as we can
remember boxes I played in a set of
boxes that the world carefully defined
but after cutting gluing and paper mache
these boxes I could no longer recognize
so I just I just got so tired of fitting
into the boxes that I broke them down
and reimagined my own Playhouse and then
I just built my own world inside of it
boxes
I built a playhouse that could let you
be flawless and fabulous and and
anything that lets you believe that you
were enough so that you could be that
quirky artist that fabulous doctor that
amazing lawyer you could be anything
that you loved so the next time that the
world hands you boxes with limitations
you shatter them break them down and
redefine their expectations
you build worlds made out of foolish
imagination and with your dreams and all
the dreams that you created social
limitations foundation so thank you but
no thank you for your social boxes I’ll
be my own architect I’ll be my own
designer I’ll be my own artist thank you
so much and this is our world for the
taking
