let me take you on a journey of
birkhoff’s countries but don’t worry you
don’t have to run you’re going to be
inside of my head as you’re listening
make sure to think about how these parts
relate to life and how these sections
can teach you lessons now let’s start
racing before the start of every race I
always think about the weirdest things
like what if I need to go to the
bathroom halfway through or are my shoes
tied tight enough it must be the nerves
because I always have butterflies in my
stomach when I’m waiting on the starting
line oh here we go he’s raising the gun
really a gun couldn’t it just be a horn
immediately my legs take off like a
bullet the start of the race is so
crowded there are people everywhere mud
flinging off for their shoes and the
only thing I’m thinking about it’s what
my coach says you don’t have to be the
first one but try to be in the front
group now that I’m racing I’m not
nervous at all because I know that I put
110 percent effort into practice and
preparation everybody’s here to win and
that everybody’s going to it but if you
don’t prepare you’ll never have a chance
ok it starts over I’m near the front of
the pack
good job Ruthie now comes the hill
there’s always a hill in the race now
the thing about Hills that you know
they’re coming they’re right in front of
you it’s not like a surprise kind of
challenge like whoops I broke my leg
can’t walk for a month no a hill is
something that you get to think about
before taking it on something that you
know you have to do but it’s still hard
and you can’t avoid it now the trick is
to think positively don’t doubt yourself
and work hard all the way to the top
because once you start the downhill run
it’s all worth it now the race isn’t
exactly over yet but Brian downhill is
like a hot knife through butter
the wind is blowing through your hair
your legs on autopilot and your other
satisfaction at the challenge the hill
is behind you whew that was tough I know
I’m supposed to keep my focus on the
race
seriously look at that view it’s
beautiful with the sun shining in the
trees and there’s a brave red cardinal
sitting right there this is the part of
the race where I like to look around a
bit sometimes you have you have to
realize where you are and how beautiful
your surroundings are okay that was
enough looking around this is already
after all I can’t catch up to her I’m
hot and sweaty and I feel like I can’t
get enough air maybe I’m not going to
finish this race maybe maybe I didn’t
practice enough maybe the girl in front
of me practice for and I did my mind is
racing and they feel like I’m slowing
down but just then I hear go Ruthie come
on earthy you can do it push harder it
was my family turning me on sometimes
when you’re losing confidence all you
need is a little motivation from your
family and friends I know this works for
me because my whole body wants to stop
but my family was carrying me on and my
legs are like cars speeding down the
road almost there whoosh yet I finally
finished it feels great to cross the
finish line because you know that you’d
finally accomplished your goal the cool
touch of the metal felt great around my
neck it was so tiring
I just want to collapse I didn’t win but
it’s not all about winning don’t get me
wrong I love winning it’s just not all
about winning just figured I didn’t win
doesn’t mean that you won’t and even if
you don’t win that’s ok it’s about how
you run the race how you live your life
it’s about preparation call me nerds
appreciating the things around you in
watching a family cheer as you cross the
finish line so ask yourself did you
tackle the hill how did you handle the
challenge did you smile at your family
as you raced by when you run your race
when you do succeed in life just make sure to do it with kindness thank you
