Learning Through Comics | Nguyen Ngoc Hoang Thai (Tom) | TEDxISHCMCAmericanAcademy

like this that I will talk about comic

book but before say anything this are

please the show of hands how many of you

up here how many of many of you in here

have read a comic book before right good

numbers awesome now this time just shout

out the words or the first thing that

comes to your mind when you hear the

word comic book keep going keep going

alright so from what I can write here I

here love supers name for some reason

your vegetables and as well as well

entertainment and kids which is

understandable since when we look at the

comic book we see pictures and small

Texas that we think Oh simple there’s

nothing education about them nor they

are for us yes once I look at them I see

that in the images and in those texts

people meaning within them is what I am

you to tell you why we should take comic

book more seriously now before I asked

you all to join me into the geek side of

things you have to know as a comic book

reader myself I am considered to be

dorky which is great there’s code book

readers or socially isolated being dorky

and Kiki I’m proud of it so how do ask

you to join me in the dorks I’d find out

how great code book can be in doing so I

would like to tell you my origin story

it all started back in 2008 when my

parents took me to the premiere of

Ironman back then I was at eight years

old Todd we didn’t know much about

I sit down with a pale face another

movie ray but then I said watch my

expression changes it came from hell and

not expressive to this I was so pumped

because all the action and how this guy

just pulled a suit of armor we’ll check

the world no I went home I did a little

digging Wikipedia of course and I found

out that he is the comic book readers so

so to read comic books years past I was

reading also a book from Marvel to DC

and to some weird Japanese manga which

I’m not going to but I would not take

them as seriously if I should have

accidentally still find them

entertaining and just as time then this

way for me to feel time it wasn’t until

2015 where my where I take it seriously

as I am now when my friends invited me

to a competition

Oh gross scholar cop it is a debate team

competition where each year the team

changes and in 2015 where it was hosted

in Malaysia the theme at that time was

superheroes I guess for sure I knew

everything all the fact that superheroes

I knew was in my head and though they

gave us free materials and know

everything even know that Superman was a

Krypton where he was not actually the

last man of Krypton I actually have a

dog and a sister even parents somewhat

though what got me excited done me was

the questions they asked the proper they

asked me to make connection with the

comics to a real world how the problem

in the comics that are happening

actually is the one that we are facing

right now so having been done and being

challenged and we read all those comic

series I have read in the past

I discovered three things and made me

change my perspective on comic book

number one they are a reflection of our

world now how many of you here have

heard of Captain America before good

as you know Captain America is a super

super soldier so so many knighted States

and that you look more to his history

you will see that back in World War two

he was the Uncle Sam or the patriotic

icon for the United States that tells

the story of war through the pages of

comic books as kids my age in the living

room they can read through the comic

books and see what’s going on in the war

at the actual time where the Battle of

the we thought that America’s us and

about how they want and how the war

changes and Captain America was a way

for the offer to tell those stories in

the real world for us he was always

being informed with what’s going on

second it makes Big Ideas smaller now I

presume you are no x-men and if you’ve

seen the x-men movies of who in a comic

book you see that they are in Google

mutants who have extraordinary powers

and especially one thing they look

different from us then those pages of

comics they were discriminative how they

look and how they act you see any

familiar with it you see that kind of

resemble still right movement but when

x-men was created the Civil War was

occurring and the offers of excellence

were actually using them as a reference

to what’s going on and connecting the

big idea of African American population

at that time which read differently from

publish of the United States they were

discriminated and that they were treated

in horrific ways that people don’t know

when kids my age read this idea they

were able to understand the idea of

equality in their minds being planted

with that we have a fundamental idea and

a concept and what to come to be a large

world problems and yet so in the page of

comics we’re tackling the appalling

problem we’re still facing them in a

real world now even though the idea of

body

change then getting ideas and messages

from comic book isn’t know isn’t so

difficult actually really hard it would

take high-level analysis incredible team

your skills

you understand the pictures and the

words that coming out of the comic book

which is why I wake up of readers read

these things they require a high level

of analysis skills dribbling co2

understand that I have the pictures of

here of the code cover see tickle

ability a cold a Marvel characters as

well I look at them think what’s going

on to this guy so right now what’s going

through in our mind or better yet what’s

the big idea that the author is trying

to tell through this girl now keep that

might get up on your head I’ll tell you

what I see from this picture because

from well I think a small girl who being

trapped she has no way to escape even

though she is like of the room though

there might be a bit of hope for its

presence in hell and though she knows

nothing going on they even look closer

you see all come off her head I’ll be in

a medal to just from this one page well

understand the entire idea as you read

look carefully to see the entire her

entire storyline understand the eye

thick idea behind each character’s I

know this character is called X 23 or

Laura and a clone of Wolverine razor

close and I want to tell you that she is

a symbol for child abuse she did not get

this cloth or this metal gelatin from

nature because I’m from experiment

ruling

now imagine that idea being headed in

those comments that people over the

world are reading these ideas now if

they were able to understand these

messages from the page of comic they

might do something about it it may be

inspired may be empowered to do

something about this problem because

whatever is coming to this girl right

now that may actually happen to the girl

someone out there in the world

which is what the purpose of book is a

way for the author to inspire to empower

the readers do something about the

problems they are facing right now I

have told you all the reasons for why we

should take comfort seriously a section

of our world and that group on critical

thinking skills make Big Ideas simpler

yes am I still talking if they’re here

blah blah blah blah our comic book

storyline yes and still here this I said

look among the crowd I can see that none

of you are convinced now if you will

convince a comic book or more and just

for entertainment and for kids they are

a way for offers send out their message

to the audience in just a different way

they are a form of expression just like

novels in text book now pictures the

Belling of historical events such as

this one if painting this tell a story

of a historic event called

the storming of the Bastille which occur

in the French Revolution of this

painting you can see that there’s a war

that’s arisen going on and that the

people are rising up storming bushes

perhaps though you might not have the

background knowledge of the French

Revolution know what’s going on you can

look at this picture carefully analyze

them getting the take idea with this

picture is a form of expression which

occur a lot in historical text books

which is what all textbook and novels

and comics yes they are format

expression they’re equivalent to each

other there’s no reason for us to

exclude them from being entertainment

now most immediate aining textbook can

be entertaining to a physics teacher can

find a textbook entertaining through the

idea and concept a math teacher can look

at formula and see wow this is really

good even though our student may not

understand what the heck that means or

from a novel where literature’s teachers

look at them and see as a message that

that Shakespeare is trying to tell us

it’s coming book – both of them are a

form of expression and try are their

best to tell the readers what’s going on

and what the idea are being transferred

to the people so I wish to tell you why

not to exclude them from novels and

textbook they’re both educational they

have four purposes just as each other

now you might hear me talking and I’m my

age I might not know yet then thing is

believing I wish I challenge you all

today

koko may go to a bookstore as well go to

the southwest ed comic book I pick up

one read it carefully and see them

through with different lens and that’s

what my teacher out there if the next

time you think of giving us a five page

reading on economic think again you

might give us a comic book instead thank

you [Applause]
