Kicking with Shoes | Kurt Kroesche | TEDxLosGatosHighSchool

No so my name is refreshed and coaching
is teaching here for a long time and my
top two days while keeping my shoes but
you can also call it writing and syncing
I think it’s really really important
that we tell both stories how we rise
how we sink and what I’m going to do is
just tell a few stories and then play
why and how I think it’s important my 4
year old when she was 4 years old
she saved my pure honor and now they’re
teenagers now but you know they were so
so passionate about the water and so we
would go to the steps and we would you
know splash around and then parents in
the audience and think you understand
what this is all about you look away for
about three seconds and your kids
they’re splashing in the water well I’ve
looked away from her three seconds and
my little ones so babies went boom yeah
now my older one Claire
she didn’t say a word she didn’t say yo
dad
so he little no she didn’t do that what
she did it she just stuck her arm down
as much and there she was
Safety Center I look back both of them
and I use that story because I think I
so perfect we want them to be something
that is really very easy and we didn’t
sink down in our lives
now when I was 18 years old I was kind
of on the rise in my swimming career and
by the time I was in college I was on a
team on a Polish team where there were
Olympians there were gold medalists
little record holders and Anthony will
eat it like it like media I’m here and I
was keeping up pretty well for the first
three weeks until our coach said every
Tuesday and Thursday morning we’re gonna
put on shoes we’re gonna start kicking
with shoes it might hurt you stink
because I knew that I was the worst to
kick around the team and there’s a song
popular’ so long back in the day and it
says I’m so tired I’m so tired tired of
waiting for you and in the locker room
of it all singing so tired tired of
taking tired of kicking the shoes and we
thought we were very clever and then it
just didn’t take away the pain for me
and so I would get in and there were
my high school varsity team in every
morning at 6:00 a.m. we would tread the
water in this circle and the deep end of
the pool and we would pass 45 pound
weights 45 pound weights passing them
around I mean I could make it for maybe
10 seconds 10 seconds head struggle
struggle struggle and then boom right
down right down to the bottom and this
got me the name moon Walker and the
reason why is because if you were to
look down at the bottom pool you to see
me walking as if I were on the moon up
to this rope the birch I’ll just have to
pull myself up with one hand and so I
have never known about this for weeks
so let’s figure down but all I had to do
is position myself right next to Andrew
himself and it was L was about 6 2 to 10
he was just us
a beast all-american he was our captain
if I just trade trade water next to him
as I was about to sink
sit down after about 10 seconds and
really just well that’s finger maybe two
fingers just say so fast-forward four
years I’m in Pablo Morales way why do I
go there myself
it lacks me more than anybody else every
time you laps me
it stops just keep going you’ve got this
let’s go crochet keep going that’s all I
needed
they didn’t tell me to take off the
shoes even give me a break and I wonder
why those two the two best guys on our
team
why did they give each other because
that was the outside I think the reason
why they reached out to me because maybe
they at one time in their life felt like
they were outsiders to about ten fifteen
years after I graduated from high school
I heard about the results I kept in
touch with just a little bit and I found
out that he was gay now back in the 80s
there was no way no way that
especially a male athlete Celinda of his
stature is going to come out because if
and they might write a story of sinking
and rising it’s a story 2,000 years ago
and a story that men today I’m using
paralyzing like that and he hears that
there is a great healer in town and so
he it’s really nice for friends take him
on a stretcher to this house but that
house is full they can
so what his friends do they go up to the
roof and they cut a hole in the roof and
after that these four friends they just
lowered and lowered the paralyzed man
down from the roof through the human
race now I think they emphasis and the
story is on the healer and on the person
you know but I like to think of prints
those four friends who help the road
they do this kind of on the outside and
they didn’t space them but they held the
rope they just held the rope which like
Andrea just reached out to me and Pablo
encouraged me and I have needed friends
of my life to kind of hold that Network
rope in my life because my junior year
in college
well the helper of sight I had a mental
emotional breakdown I quit school I can
hardly function and I learned that
really good for most of my life I
suffered from severe depression I was
just really good at hiding it for a EEOC
ELAP
I have friends who are encouraging me I
guess too close I’d like to talk about
these stories and I think it’s slowly
important that we tell our syncing
stories not just the times one of your
eyes this i think it’s our sinking
stories that define us look I have been
an English teacher for a long time and I
know that the best stories the stories
we want to be eaten and the stories of
struggle the story is where we are down
and the stories of perseverance or
Redemption of course – but I hope that
they need to tell are seeking stories to
each other because it makes us more
accessible I know that’s hard in a place
like those cats I know that’s hard
I just well you gotta spread your resume
around and you got to build yourself up
but I think quite obviously people don’t
care
your mom I care and grandmom I care but
really we didn’t care we want to know
who you are you are and then finally I
think that the syncing story is going to
talk about sweet woman that
four-year-old kid so pulley pull us out
to make it look so easy when we’re
saying getting little dress but that’s
not the way it works the way it works is
that we don’t we can’t really save
anybody or say anything so we can be
there we can hold the ropes we can give
a marriage right and I think that when
we do we rise and help others your
attitude thanks for this [Applause]
