presently some people on Facebook
decried racism I think what was more
interesting was that there were some
people who supported these lenders
saying why shouldn coordinates have the
right to protect their property now I’m
going to give you some context to
Singapore first race is a big deal it’s
a it’s almost like one of the
aspirations or an advantage upon which
the country was fought was called
multiracial and multi-religious harmony
of peace
the idea that forgot us of race language
or religion anybody who works hot in
Singapore can see now in the home where
it’s predominately Chinese much renewed
sense of that much but in Singapore
there is a more diverse racial mix that
we commonly refer to as sea and IO
standing and sense where Chinese Malays
Indians and others so from beyond age we
have big told about the dangers of
stirring up racial and religious
conflicts in schools we observe
something called racial comedy day every
July and this commemorates on the racial
line there will happen in pre
independent Singapore and did you know
that over 80% of the same for resident
population analysts in public housing
and that actually original protest right
down to each block this is to prevent
racial on place so the big question is
after so many years of very
is social mingling and simple still a
racist society what I have experienced
one of the study activities we did for
my more than just in the series we asked
our participants to independently you
rate the level of racism that they felt
in Singapore and to justify why so I
thought a bit interesting if you can
take a moment as well and think about it
for yourself in context of Hong Kong or
any other city if they are familiar with
okay so I’m going to share some findings
from on more than just discussions we
could be in contact in Singapore but I’m
guessing that some of these are actually
quite universal so in Singapore and I am
glad for it that we generally feel that
there is more harmony than there is
racism and that’s because we all see
widespread in your face racism we don’t
care of violent racially motivated crime
at all so the authorities kind of pretty
much anything but what people do see and
do experience as something like cattle
racism jokes and insensitive comments
that way to funny to you
but it would actually be quite so most
of our participants actually immigrating
from about 3 to 6 depending on how much
casual racism they experienced in their
lives so we have a few people as well in
very damning ratings something like it
or not they say the very idea of see and
idle is the exact opposite of the greys
life and the exact opposite of race
blank means for a hyper aware of our
race differences are racist society now
I think from this styling exercise
we can see that it is a creative spoken
existence they were living there is one
situation a Singapore that we’ve all
grown in and people have different
perspectives but because of the
different lenses and the merits and the
different elements that get thrown in a
specific line of vision for some people
it’s a very rosy outlook while others
that’s so now why wouldn’t that be taste
and I want to introduce this concept of
Chinese privilege to you this and notion
is increasingly disgusting Singapore the
idea is similar to the idea of white
privilege it’s a mother a society’s
discuss that be the majority and
dominant group enjoys the social
societal advantages and benefits that
they may not actually receive and these
could be things like job opportunities
because they speak the majority language
or it could be something less tangible
something like how you needed three
people the strangest you speak because
some of your own culture dominant
culture is more aligned with what a
societal noughts compared to a minority
group as you can imagine this is the
type of that’s a very divisive topic in
Singapore as well you have people who
think and this includes Chinese singer
parties by the way people who say yes
there is trainees privileged in
Singapore and you need to raise the
awareness of this raise the level
sensitivity that that changed community
when you talk to my other two girls and
then they’re understood and okay and
this includes not many Singaporeans
music no there’s no such thing as
Chinese privilege because everybody has
access to good education and a good
public housing and opportunities if you
will convert it don’t propagate itself
victimizing culture another of this was
a solo it it and they have a point
actually looking at everything as a baby
these are other factors that affect that
we have fully waved off or decided and
there’s a problem with service call
sometimes it gets very heavy and very
confusing and it’s very desperate boost
by oh who is wrong or what is real or
whether it’s justified to think in a
certain way or not now in this day and
age where it becoming increasingly aware
of how the inundation of both
information and this information is that
contraception and health and affecting
opposition maybe the politician things
of this it is good that we’re looking
for facts and truth desires everyone
wasn’t just oh I come to realize that
one is real may not actually be what
uneasy vocally truth and objective that
do a big fat check yet I go on race
which is what I’ve been talking about
since the start of this presentation
race is not an unequivocally true
and content there is very little
biological basis for that idea that
there are racial divide amongst the
human race and this is why an Indian boy
and a Chinese phone you put together and
had a baby because essentially we are
one human race so what we think of as
racial device are actually social
constructs and amalgamation of anything
that we want to discriminate equal right
that could be language that can be
physical appearances pastiche at history
before I go on to the next lecture I do
want to say though that in certain
situations we do see that race becomes
real
and this is when it enters somebody’s
agenda or somebody’s policy now in
Singapore it could be like event is CMI
our own policy stands and it affects
whether or not combine your choice
property unit and baby weather may be
either not eligible invited over the
forgotten anymore things like this but I
know about the days of history race was
real even though it’s got very little
biological basis it was very real
in not least Germany for the ku klux if
if you’re out pool news and all rebels
it it was a matter of life and death
some people one thing that becomes one
be railroad and this is why I found up
to my more than just Tennessee’s if that
cut is really whether or not you think
it’s warranted or logical for somebody
to think all to feel that cut instead of
situation it’s very difficult to
rationalize away cut feelings and tell
somebody like it doesn’t make sense you
feel it because of their but they are
but and acknowledging cuts is important
because we acknowledge the fact that
people ultimately vote for different
experiences in life and then indeed some
people have had the shock banana to
stick people are looking for safe spaces
to talk about these feelings and
experiences and it can be sure that
their choice medium is not these for so
it never got eleven those and I were
able to come up with one and just where
it’s all participants were able to share
it more free even though it couldn’t
solve it politically incorrect so before
we get too carried away
face I don’t want to warn you as well
that safe space is another emotional
evening and so that people argue about
the one that some people say
marginalized groups need safe spaces so
we can share about things open these up
here for practical without fear of
reprisal the many we can’t we have the
other cameras a safe spaces then it free
speech so that you know we can singles
emotionally damaging things which
constitute and alternative viewpoint so
as far as Lewis and I will concern we
just wanted a safe space whatever that
could mean where people have different
experiences and opinions people
different ideas but just come together
and talk about it respectfully without
breaking up into a fight that’s about it
well to be sure we’ll be trying to reach
out to frozen racists for a lack of
better term those an I admit that that
goes through a lot of people articles
and comment sections and when we saw a
meet spirit to comment we would actually
meet that evokes a like hi you’re
interested you seem interested in this
topic would you like to come join a more
than just in it well I think we didn’t
actually manage together as a group I
got that very different person well not
to be deterred because it still needed
somebody in our movie in our discussions
to articulate some racist notions you
can put explore called who all the races
and then basically use it and I think we
may be familiar this concept it uses the
I Google autocomplete such suggestions
and we wanted we wants to use this to
help us articulate some of the people
thinking about Ruth there’s a property
in that science but let’s give it a try
so I did this this is google.com but
each case incoming solo and I type it
live to Chinese what do you think auto
such like autocomplete suggested anybody
wants to suggest something why anybody
no biggest thing up I feel oh no sorry
like shopping there’s possibility but at
Easter boola talk about it kick in
company to vote it seems like some
people are searching for quiet I am
saying when do I read why do you
birthday more like you spit why do you
eat everything
what is one my name is chopsticks I eat
moon cakes and what if small eyes what
is this mess my festival without so you
get the idea right let’s move on to the
next one
why do in it once again doesn’t blowed
up on the H pink incompetence with
anybody like to suggest what people
could be searching for in this people
sorry good man an IT baby who guess what
I saw but actually why I do and then
separately
why wouldn’t be nice both ends and one
little bit service did it concur some of
one hand okay so because this exercise
in a few languages actually because it’s
a for several communities you use
different languages but in English
Michigan people who interact with the
world a differently which have exposure
to different media and therefore they
may have different ideas about certain
things and then different questions as
well so I try this again google.com not
escape in healthy Tomo and I typed in
Chinese why you Indians you think of
it’s a most you think is similar or
different from what what was it in
thought this I honestly don’t really
understand this I’m asking frame but she
has an explained it to me so I’m waiting
for it I get it like why somebody would
be not use wine in a people okay but I
think it was an interesting exercise for
us realize like for us to just get into
somebody’s head why is somebody asking
these questions so to be sure we are not
trying to racist Shane I mean I’ve been
trying to advocate for the anti racism
we just really try to
somebody else’s great to know what are
you thinking and why did not see
questions that it articulates and Benny
could be construed as being racist
competition from this little exercise is
that ignorance is real and people do a
comfortable position up if there is when
they see certain things it sounded
increases thanks moving so this will go
exercise and it’s not until we get
attentive a part of the position of
ignorance it also coming from a bit of
from quite a bit of curiosity and that’s
that’s the thing so the two realities
received from our more than just project
one is hurt
the other one is ignorance and I was you
know my mean can indulge me a little bit
I like to bring you to your colleague
your go-between and stuff and a chicken
to explain why for the ignorance go very
well together
well that’s it it’s not funny what
people call us class and it not chicken
well still to acknowledge the clip but
if this the duck though shut down the
conversation that’s it you can get it
never get it this chicken and at this
point the chicken hill post-op even at
this point was a certain is Mike to see
whatever you want even I can see
whatever I’m a free range chicken
unfortunately this is this is the kind
of compensation I see a lot on all these
things
free-to-air your point of view that
possibility it’s not very helpful is
luck are constructed because they see a
lot of things for each other but
nobody’s actually
conversation is high especially when
you’re trying to get disagreeable people
in the room together to come back and if
your purpose is really to try to throw
it in conversations broaden perspectives
and wider horizons it is a lot of work
there is a lot of sanity holes there is
curation and there is a lot of research
and then it comes with three topics and
print out information and digestible
nuggets of wisdom so that people get it
a lot of thought and consideration went
into the format for more than just
because and a lot by consideration has
to go in if your time to do it things
like this because people need to feel a
bit safer and to share it in your life
now I’m sure about this wanted just like
even for today’s lineup is the same
thing so you can be sure that woman just
was really more than just one reason
recently and it will be more than just
about sex and sexism for ancient
ages more than just was about a process
in which different people and talk and
negotiate ever-changing boundaries in a
pluralistic society it is about being
able to engage somebody unlike yourself
now prior to today somebody that
suggested to me that it wasn’t it in
kombu instead I a Singaporean
will come speak to Hong Kong audience
about civic discourse for that and I
thought it’s a good fitting end to my to
my presentation all right because we
might be nice for us to all go back and
have a think
what kind of labels to replace much as
but also on ourselves and what notions
of civic this costs do we have that may
not actually be true and that’s but not
least so you’ll be able to let me this
single party be more than just those labels thank you very much
