in 2011 when I was five years old
we were located two Cremona Italy for
two years kimono is located in northern
Italy in our southeastern Milan in the
Po River Valley it is about the same
size as Green Bay with 70,000
inhabitants kimonos downtown is alive
with people thorough cultural events
every weekend the outdoor living room of
the city the Piazza is an open Plaza
that is transformed daily to invite
kamon easy affair una passe Java to go
for a walk La Paz Sujatha the walk is
the thing that separates Italy it’s very
own jaw it is the human connection that
creates community our Italian morning
starts with walk at rafter my mom dug
pathology una panaderia or a bread shop
with chard friend Greta and her family
owns on a typical morning we find all
three generations there today tha’s
mother is at the register smiling and
helping all the customers she knows
every person by name and genuinely cares
about their families Tomasz oh good it
does three year old son comes flying out
of the kitchen full flower and feet
behind him is Greta trying to wrangle
her son into washing his hands larvae
till a body wash her hands
shields after the cloud a flower being
inside the bread shop is like being in
her own home the line of business and
family is blurred when it is our turn I
find I’ve highball a mini pie filled
with Nutella today Fez mom reaches down
and grabs two of the delicate delicious
Christophe it we pay say our goodbyes
our American morning starts with the
drive I follow my mom out to the garage
into your car and bulk up my seatbelt
when we arrive at Target we go to the
bakery section and pick up a piece of
bread the loaf of bread is not delivered
with a smile no one is yelling after
their child and it certainly doesn’t
feel like we’re in anybody’s home our
next Italian stop is the serenity they
eat through the vanilla the fruit
chopped
this means the sisters of fruit chop the
fruit chopping Italy is the place to go
when juicy ripe fruit is needed when we
walk into the shop the two sisters
instantly called from the back
ciao hello ah McKibben no Sophia Anna
oh how wonderful Sofia Nana I smile at
them and follow my mom to case of ripe
peaches as mom is choosing the fragrant
fruit they converse and exchange stories
about what is going on in their lives
when we have decided on the peaches we
want we hide to the small cash register
to pay while my mom is busy checking out
the little old lady smiles and hands me
a fresh strawberry I return the smile
and thank her and then we’re on our way
back out to the streets in America after
picking up our bread we walk over to the
fruit section there is no one to help us
pick up pick up juicy fruit no target
workers know us by name and there’s no
small register to pay out I’m not given
a fresh strawberry by little old lady in
it only walk into EAGA Serrano Mia or
the deli the wrinkled face behind the
counter smiles and he asks how he can
help us
of course he already knows exactly what
we want my mom walks around the glass
display case bursting with specialty
cheeses and of course prosciutto or ham
all the meat seemed like soldiers on the
ceiling by the point of my mother’s
finger he reaches out and grabs the
prosciutto after the prosciutto is put
down on the slicing
he began slicing it thinly we grab our
card paper wrap prosciutto or ham Fi and
jam aprender formaggio or we go and get
cheese once you’ve chosen the cheese we
want we pay and begin our walk home in
America we walk into the refrigerated
meat section there certainly are plenty
of options but no kind when cold old
face helping us mom chooses a packet of
prepackaged cam and we are on our way
the ham is one thickness fits all and
definitely not suddenly sliced our final
stock is at the checkout where no one
knows her name and then we begin our
drive back home in italia a TV a la casa
we arrive back home and it is now 11:30
in the afternoon time for lunch
Oh temple Petitte Franza my mom makes us
panini sandwiches with the bread from
the bakery and prosciutto from the deli
the fruit with lunch are the peaches
from the sisters at the fruit shop one
lunch is finished and the table has been
cleared we all go our separate ways
mom massive a deep Azov sea mom goes and
takes a quick nap Nina my little sister
and I and Yama guardado TV go to watch
TV even if we wanted to go out no shops
are open from 1:00 to 3:00 the shop
owners of cremona closed their doors so
they can go home and take naps and of
course eat lunch the city itself
slumbers and not a single person can be
seen from our window walking back in
America we arrive home and it is not
eleven thirteen afternoon so time for us
to make lunch my mom makes us sandwiches
with breads from Target and
from Target the fruit we have is also
surprisingly from Target bomb cleans the
dishes well Nina and I do our homework
we decide to go to zestes for a special
treat they are open conveniently from 10
a.m. to 10 p.m. because Green Bay
continues to work the city does not
American Italy are two different world
are two different cultures in Italy
human relationships can be found on a
smaller scale human connection is at an
arm’s length because of lack passage
otha the walk to small businesses from
the fruit shop to the deli here in
America connection can become lost in
the larger scale of supermarkets like
Target driving our cars we miss
opportunities around us to create
relationships however even Italy is
changing and the current generation of
Italians is evolving supermarkets are
rapidly multiplying and small businesses
are dropping like flies and don’t get me
wrong
supermarkets are great as long as the
human connection is not lost here is a
quote from Dean Ornish that says this
far better than I can
the need for connection and community is
primal as fundamental as a need for air
water and food it is necessary to
connect with people it doesn’t have to
be making a new best friend every day or
always shopping at a small business it
can be as simple as holding the door for
the next guest smiling at the cashier or
even just waving to your neighbor if we
all connect in a small and if we all
connect in a small way every day our
communities would feel much more vibrant
thank you for your time Gracia [Applause]
