I Talk to Myself! | Evan Garcia | TEDxChulaVista

finish this sentence sticks and stones
may break my bones but words will never
you know personally I disagreed this
quote some people use their words to
cause great damage some people use their
hateful words to attack and belittle
others but the negative words that
people say to themselves what I call
negative self-talk is the most dangerous
talk a person uses when you invite
negative self-talk into your life it can
become like an evil spirit that won’t
stop haunting you
sometimes the meanest words that a
person hears are the words spoken to
themselves so let’s rephrase the
original quote sticks and stones may
break my bones but negative words inside
of me will rip my soul to shreds okay
sorry for such a depressing start let me
show you there is a bright side to this
topic you might think I’m crazy but I
actually would love to talk to myself
here’s why see I’m on a quest to master
the power of positive self-talk that’s
why I’m on this stage today positive
self-talk is so powerful that it can
literally overcome anything including
negative self-talk and yeah it can even
help a nervous 12 year old give a speech
in front of hundreds people something I
feel we should know there are two types
of self-talk one negative and the other
positive and we decide which one will
dole inside of us think of it like this
negative and positive self-talk are
going heads a head inside of your head
if you feed one you will starve the
other I’d like for you to focus on this
question for the rest of my talk
what are you feeding your soul negative
or positive self-talk something I feel
we should never turn our backs on is our
own self-worth today I propose the idea
that our self-worth is tied up in
something very specific our self-talk
our self-talk is a set of ideas about
ourselves and we repeat our self talk
over and over again nobody comes close
to spending as much time with yourself
as you do and if you think about it
everybody’s having an ongoing
conversation with themselves throughout
the whole day the mental conversations
we have with ourselves our self-talk can
strongly influence our outcomes
therefore we should not turn our backs
on the power self-talk for this reason
it shapes our self-worth and it
determines what life will give us in
return
in August last year I switched schools
for the very first time at that point my
self-talk wasn’t so positive but
thankfully on the first day a series of
fortunate events unfolded before me the
moment I stepped in the class I noticed
an old friend from church CJ he smiled
at me as he bit as he began and stack in
the classrooms chairs Wow I thought to
myself maybe this place was something to
offer and I sat down at my assigned
table with a bit more ease sitting
across from me was a classmate I would
soon become friends with Zen I didn’t
know his name yet but I knew one thing
about him right away
he liked water he had five water bottles
next to him would you like one Zen
offered cool new school and a friend I
thought to myself and I gladly accepted
the bottle next I opened up my binder
and sitting right between my folders and
right notebook was a cake a chocolate
bar and a message that read hope you
have a great first day it was from my
big system to Thalia these random acts
of kindness helped me feel happy and
confident again and got myself talked
back on track we can all do the same for
each other I know somebody in this room
has thought badly themselves maybe even
today
but this can change it has to change so
do you now see the power self talk what
do you think you’re worth honestly the
most important person who determines
your self-worth is you so don’t in your
vacuum yourself instead say this words
cannot express what I am worth to the
world my name is Evan Garcia and I’d
love to talk to myself and now you see
why so I invite you to join me on the
quest to become a master of positive
self-talk and please spread the word
because this is definitely an idea worth
sharing thank you [Applause]
