How we can End Poverty by 2030. | Carin Jämtin | TEDxNorrköping

[Music]
do you think that we can end poverty by
the year 2030
do you think that we can eradicate
extreme poverty by the same year it’s
actually only 13 years from now quite
close in time do you think we can end
poverty I do think that we can I think
we can and I actually know we can but
only if only if we put our heads
together we really put strengths
strength and power behind words and make
a difference then we can we put the
heads together and we put and respect
the equal value of every human being on
this globe then we can eradicating
extreme poverty is actually what 193
leaders of 193 countries set out to
achieve in 2015 when they signed an
underline the global goals for
sustainable development the stds 17
ambitious goals covering all kinds of
subjects 17 goals aiming to eradicate
extreme poverty inequality and climate
change big goals but achievable goals
my name is corneum team I’m currently
I’m director of C de Swedish
international development cooperation
agency and I will today talk about equal
rights equal rights as a pathway to
fighting poverty a couple of weeks ago I
had the possibility of going to Tanzania
a country in Eastern Africa amongst many
other meetings I met with a group of
girls and young women
they had all been victims of sexual
abuse harassment and female genital
mutilations now all of them go to school
they go to school they study they dream
they dream of becoming doctors that’s
what they told me or engineers or other
profession sees but most of all they
dream of making a difference in society
they go to school they know that they
have the right to education and that
right or other that knowledge of the
right empowers them to dream of their
future in short the human rights-based
approach is the two toe tool we used
use to do our utmost to actually combat
poverty and ensure the right of every
human it cuts through every project all
the works everywhere whatever we do in
the development cooperation no matter if
we mitigate work with mitigating climate
change support education or promote
peace human rights cut through all of
our work and that is for two reasons two
seemingly simple but two reasons firstly
human rights approach a human rights
approach ensures that everyone knows
their rights like the girls in Tanzania
imagine if they didn’t know the right to
education then they couldn’t claim that
they should go to school and imagine if
you didn’t know that you had the right
to go to the voting station actually
cost your vote in the ballot box on
Election Day
then you wouldn’t go to the ballot paper
through the voting station so the first
reason is knowledge everyone should know
their right and claim it the second
reason is of course or is that the human
rights-based
a Shores that those in power actually
that works takes care of their
obligations and assures that all people
in their society actually have access to
their rights there what they have to do
the people in power is to respect to
protect and to fulfill the rights of all
individuals in their respective
countries so for those two reasons a
rights based approach is something which
guides us in all our works but I would
let the guy would like to go a little
bit further and explain what this is
smart why does it offer good solutions
in poverty combating swedish aids put
equal right at par on the side of the
poor people’s perspective we work with
the two at the same time I would like to
give you two examples of where we put
the rights perspective and the poor
people’s perspective next to each other
and what difference it makes the first
example will be on sexual and
reproductive health and rights and there
were other one on women’s empowerment
the two examples showing how democracy
how democratic and healthy society can
healthier societies can actually grow
out of these perspectives sexual
reproductive health reproductive health
and rights are human rights
it’s just basic and that’s a start and
it can’t really be discussed 830 women
830 women worldwide die every day from
preventable child birth related or
pregnancy-related complications
214 million women lack contraceptives in
low and middle-income countries
68,000 unsafe abortions are performed
every day every day on this globe that
means actually I was trying to count a
bit before 650 unsafe abortions being
performed while I gave this talk today
still some say that the issue of
abortion and contraceptives are
irrelevant issues that is simply not
true when a girl has power over her life
over her body in her life she empowers
herself and she empowers her family she
empowers her future children the
children she will have over own choice
she empowers societies and she empowers
nations this actually leads to poverty
eradication when we sit here today the
me to campaign spreads through our media
through social medias through so-called
old-fashioned media’s when we talk to
each other the me to campaign spreads
like a wildfire
it’s bedspreads into our everyday lives
it spreads into our collective
consciousness and it will lead to change
and I would like to say to you men and
boys it’s now your time to act to really
act and make a difference because it’s
just as important for men to take on the
challenge the challenge the existing
gender norms to push boundaries and
actually make a difference as it is for
women
because to really make a change in
society men have to use you have to use
your voices your votes and your
decisions to make equal the equal rights
of every human a reality on this globe I
would like to quote an Indian woman
whole CD earlier my husband never used
to help me even in our farm activities
now after being part of SIA dar he seems
to have understood the importance of
sharing the workload and now we both do
all work be it inside the house or
outside and I’ll quote the husband OCD
was a participant in a campaign
organized by a civil society
organization in India in Madhya Pradesh
the campaign aimed at the informing men
and women but may men as partners and
responsible fathers about maternal
health and the necessity of good
maternal health in all communities it
was aimed at empowering the community to
demand better maternal health and to
demand maternal health of any kind to
the community the organization which
organized this campaign is part of an
urban alliance called the men engaged
alliance and that alliance works on
exactly that engaging men to change
norms in societies the men engage
alliance is active in 70 countries with
700 affiliates it’s good work it’s a lot
of work but it’s far from enough and we
will try to engage more because in order
for human rights to be realized
sexual and reproductive health and
rights has to be recognized and
established it’s simply a matter of
humanity and reality to be a free and
equal individual once reproductive and
sexual rights has to be regarded as
equal to others to be able to be part of
a Democratic Society
one has to choose when or rather every
woman has to have the possibility to
choose if and when one wants to have a
child that leads me on to the next
example of how Swedish development
cooperation works and that is in the
field of democracy and having a voice
there is no political equality and
really no democracy at all without
equality between the genders the
empowerment of women is actually changes
in power relations the empowerment of
women strengthens democracies in all
countries of the globe but it also
strengthens the economies of the
countries therefore empowerment of women
is a smart way of actually reducing
poverty and strengthening societies I
would like to share a story from
Guatemala Mayan women in Guatemala have
been fighting for justice in
compensation for the atrocities the
atrocities that were made for them to
them during the their country’s 36
year-long
civil war they not only lost husbands
and children they were also themselves
often victims of sexual violence
committed by the military at the end of
February 2016 to former Guatemalan to
Guatemalan former military officers were
convicted they were convicted of crimes
against humanity they were convicted
amongst other things for keeping 15
women sexual slaves and domestic slaves
at a military base they were also
convicted for murder and disappearances
this was of course this conviction in
the Guatemalan national court was of
course immensely important for the women
they got justice and some compensation
but it was also the first case ever
actually where a national court has
reached a guilty verdict a guilty
verdict for sexual way violations
perpetrated during an armed conflict
Sweden supported these mayan women by
supporting the Attorney General’s Office
civil society organizations but also
directly the women themselves by setting
in in the court hearings listening
supporting them and simply being there
the experience from from Guatemala shows
that empowerment of the is one of the
most critical factors to actually
achieve justice for victims of crimes
against humanity it also shows that when
women recognized that they are entitled
to justice a whole nation can move
forward
so can we eradicate the poverty by the
year 2030 I believe we can and we all
have a role in actually working towards
the sustainable development goals
when the world sets goals we can make a
difference between 1990 and 2010 extreme
poverty was hoped we had other
Development Goals at the time the world
decided that we should at least have
extreme poverty and that was done the
head of schedule actually equal rights
for all is the bedrock for positive
change and development for the
individual the change is obvious it may
be obvious to all of us but the equal
rights for all is also the force that is
needed to change and challenge
structural and justices therefore Equal
Rights can actually be one of the
strongest tool in combating poverty
equal rights empower more people to take
actions and be agents of change in their
own lives that is actually all what
Swedish development cooperation is about
so can we eradicate poverty by 2030 by
using equal rights we can put an end to
poverty but only if we put our heads
together and really put our minds behind
it and work together thank you for
listening
