How Video Game Emotes Can Teach Us About Our Humanity | Alex Bories | TEDxTheBenjaminSchool

jump on the point over time over time
come on come on
soldiers lit lit Lucille’s hacked three
people down come on come on that was too
easy
GG sorry I was finishing up a match with
the video game overwatch which I love
and what is really interesting to me is
the power of the / sport and video games
like it do you have to player the
ability to switch from first-person view
where they’re looking out of the eyes of
their avatar to a third-person view
where you’re outside of your avatar
looking at them using this power is
that’s easy as pressing a button and
doing the moat and a moat is a way to
show your feelings on the virtual
battlefield so for instance if you
wanted to appear angry you could press
the mode button and your avatar will
have a tantrum if you wanted your avatar
to demonstrate a SATA mode you could
have them sit down in a closed-down pose
like this what is really cool about this
is when you enable on a moat your game
screen will immediately shift your
perception of your avatar from first to
third person so you can see them from
above using this some experiencing this
emotion as the rest of the world would
perceive it because of this feature of
remotes they can be used be used for
more strategic purposes for instance
when there’s an enemy around the corner
and I’m in first-person I cannot see
them but if I were to switch to
third-person not only could I see myself
but I could see around the corner and
get the advantage on my enemy imagine if
we could have emotes in real life to see
objectively what was invisible to us
subjectively I could become an amazing
poker player or an awesome car driver
not that I have my license yet but it
does come up in life grammar wise
in English class we learn the difference
between 1st and 3rd person and when we
write our critical essays we cannot use
words like I me you this gets the
information straight to the audience but
it does not allow for any emotion to be
seen but this year in English when we
got to write got to write our TEDx talks
we got to use those words and I don’t
feel like and I think this allows for
you the audience to see the work and
emotion put into it but while first
person has more emotional range third
person has its benefits an LaMotte the
author is famous for saying that in
conversation we could take better care
of ourselves in the third person rather
than the first because we are speaking
we are not speaking from ourselves but
we are speaking about ourselves so you
don’t have to feel guilty or apologize
for voicing your own opinion because you
aren’t it’s your third person personal
secretary like when I forget to study
for history instead of me going through
confessions like I’m sorry and I’m lazy
my third person secretary can just say
sorry Alex could not finish his homework
at this time he was attending some very
important business which is true I was
attending a very important TV series but
we’re emotes in real life would be real
handy would be assessing our own
character say there’s a kid at school
who has no friends and gets punched and
bullied and called awful names say I
walk by if I were to remain in the first
person I could just wipe away my guilt
by saying well I didn’t do anything
wrong but if I were to switch to the
third person I’d have to physically
watch myself walk away from someone
else’s suffering that I could have
prevented it is good for all of us to be
in the third person a little bit of
every single day and maybe one day
technology will give us a way to
catapult us from our clothes narrow
worlds to a much broader world but for
now is up to ourselves to to see how we
affect other people in her TED talk the
dangers of a single story Chimamanda
Anna Garcia did she talks about how
knowing a person single story could lead
to many stereotypes she says we must
hear and recognize a person’s many
stories likewise we have many stories
our first person’s story of who we tell
ourselves who we are and our third
person’s story where our actions tell
the world who we are
Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s novel To
Kill a Mockingbird as a character great
as a character of great morality and
kindness
he’s said to be the same inside the
house as he would be on the open public
streets I’m just asking you to take your
cue from Miss adichie and Atticus Finch
check out your first and third person
versions of yourself and make sure they sync up thank you
