How To Show Up After You Show Up | Julian Bradley | TEDxYouth@DSA

thank you so much I used to think the
secret to success was 80% showing up and
that other 20% was the effort that you
put in after you got there later on I
figured out that I was completely wrong
I figured out that showing up it was
only 60 percent of the battle and the
other 40% was how you choose to show up
after you show up meaning are you
mentally engaged after you’re physically
present
are you putting your best foot forward
and giving it a hundred percent see for
example you can be in school be in class
show up not pay attention to the teacher
at all not even pay attention to your
friends be on your phone and guess what
when a test comes around you showed up
now 60%
last time I checked that’s still enough
you’re in sports and you participate on
a team guess what you go to class I mean
if you go to sports uh practice and you
don’t participate with the rest of the
team and next thing you know you’re
goofing around you are in the game time
the coach doesn’t want to put you in the
game and also even if he does you’re
gonna lose to every other single player
who decided to show up after they show
up and play a hundred percent bülow now
you guys all showed up here on a
Saturday morning which I commend you for
but I’m a challenge here I’m gonna
invite you to show up after you show up
how are you gonna be engaged with all
the speakers are you gonna take any
notes are you gonna look for that one or
two little nugget that can actually help
you charge your life for change and help
you achieve any of your goals in your
life now show of hands who here has ever
set a goal
awesome now who here has ever kept who
ever who’s who here has ever fell short
of a goal only because you didn’t put
forward your best foot forward and show
up after you show up
almost every single person in the room
and those who didn’t raise your hands
I’m sure you lie about other things too
as well so why is that why does that
happen right so I believe our brains are
wired keep us comfortable keep us in our
comfort zone and in order to show up
after you show up that requires us to do
work that makes us uncomfortable
sometimes and when you do work that just
makes you comfortable you end up doing
just enough to get by doing just enough
to be good but not be great and that’s
exactly what I was doing in my life when
I was in high school and so one night
every single thing changed when I was
completely humiliated show hands who he
remembers the first part
well let me tell you a little story
about my first car and how it charged me
up to take control of my life and show
up after I show up into three areas in
my life that matter the most for myself
for my friends of my family for my
community I remember it like it was
yesterday let me paint the picture it
was a cold day just like one of these
days today me and my friends decided to
go out to the movies and so I parked my
car on the hill which for most cars
isn’t an issue but my car had a few
issues one of the main issues being
couple weeks earlier the transmission
went so I reversed didn’t work so I
actually had to push my car to the spot
and since my door didn’t always open at
the jump dude my window
slam on the brake turn the steering
wheel or I proceeded to roll back down
the hill and hit anything or anyone and
while I did this all my friends started
laughing at me stare I never forgot
I was humiliated
hit me like a ton of bricks
I noticed that my car wasn’t the only
thing in my life that was breaking down
this was a trend that was happening
throughout my whole life I was just
doing enough just to get by not only
with my car
but with my relationship with my grades
and also the sports that I participated
in from that piece of plane from that
pace of discomfort and humiliation I
made a decision with myself that I was
never ever ever gonna be the type of
person the dude enough just to get by
get meteor a result and I made a pact
with myself then I was gonna show up
after I showed up in the three areas of
my life that mattered the most with
myself my friends and my family and also
my community now shortly after
my newfound ambition
I really really really wanted a new car
and I presented and I went outside an
opportunity to work with an
international sales organization and
tell some of their products and that
opportunity opened up a lot of doors for
me and taught me a lot of things like
determination suffer Brazilian and
emotional intelligence and all these
other things that were so crucial a
success but the biggest thing that has
taught me was to show up after I showed
up because if I didn’t show up then I
didn’t get paid seeing a hundred percent
per Commission job if you don’t do the
work then you’re not getting a paycheck
and for most people scares people go
into the opportunity like that because
most people they show up they go in the
clock in they go disengaged or they
don’t put in a hundred percent effort
knowing that they’re gonna get a
paycheck anyway and I knew that was my
comfort zone that was all my friends
comfort zone but I didn’t want to stay
in my comfort zone anymore
I knew that this would be a perfect
opportunity to show myself that I can
show up after I show up and creating
magic like extraordinary results in my
life
so it was interesting some of my friends
and even some of my own family didn’t
believe that this would be the best
opportunity for me and maybe I was just
wasting my time
it was a little bit too risky but I
decided to do it anyway so I blew out
all the way across the country to go to
my company’s training
and while I was there I met up with a
man who completely changed my life he
was a keynote speaker his name was Jay
papasan and after his keynote speech I
came up to him and I had a brief
conversation in that brief conversation
changed the direction of my life
I came up to us at hey Jay that was
amazing I learned everything that you
said I learned so much where can I learn
more he said well I’m happy you learned
a lot but the first thing that I would
say and the best resource would be the
book that we mailed to each and every
single person in the audience before you
got here I said yeah about that the book
he said yeah what about it he said why I
kind of threw it away
he looked yeah he looked at me so why
would you throw it away I said you know
see I don’t read I’d rather listen to
audiobooks and I never forgot the way
that he looked at me he looked at me
like that five head it was crazy
never got to look
he said Julian let me ask you a question
do you ever want to be the best at
anything you do and I said of course why
not I wouldn’t want to be the best so
well let me tell you something how do
you ever expect to be the best at
anything you do if you’re not willing to
put in the effort to show up and do the
things that the most successful people
do to better themselves and consistently
grow let me tell you quick back the
average person reads one book a year
while the average CEO reads 10 books a
year fast forward 10 years
one person has read ten books while the
other person is read a hundred books
average CEO read a hundred books and
then who do you think is gonna be able
to see more opportunities who do you
think is gonna be paid more what do you
think is gonna be seen more as a leader
in their field the person who read ten
books in ten years the person who reads
100 books in 10 years or the person who
reads zero books in ten years like you
just like that light bulb went up my
head I decided to show up I invested my
money to fly across the country and be
at this conference
but I wasn’t showing up after I showed
up and decided to do the things that the
most successful people were doing they
consistently grow and become a better
person and from that space I decided
left there I’m gonna start reading every
single day for 15 minutes and boy was it
painful the first book I bought was
actually the book I threw away actually
that book completely changed my life and
I started to do it every single day and
then I started to get addicted because I
started to implement the things that I
was learning and putting it into my life
next thing you know
fast board at the end of the summer
added a 45,000 students that were
competing for the same scholarship than
they only gave me spot I ended up being
number 25 I surprised myself
I actually earned over $30,000 at 17
years old I bought my dream BMW and
everything in my life was starting to
come together and I thought to myself
how was this possible
and an amazing scent I decided to show
up myself and invest in myself so that I
can create change in my life
something happened I was hungry
at 17 years old you know you get a car
now you want some rims on it or you want
you no wonder you want trick it out I
want it to make more money so I decided
hey I’m gonna study the top people what
are the top people doing I reach out to
them and something really special happen
I noticed one thing none of them cared
about money
none of them they only cared about
becoming the best version of themselves
and as a return of focusing on excellent
they were paid and they were able to
offer a better service to their client
which was really interesting so I
decided hey I’m gonna emulate anything
that you guys do I started to read the
same books I started go to the same
copies we have the same mentors get the
same code and something magical started
to happen in all the areas of my life
with myself my friends and my family in
my community everything started to grow
and start become better I said how can I
share this with my friends with my
family I want to share this my friends
in my family so that they can help I can
help them achieve their goals too as
well so show hands to here as friends
in real life and also and show some
media
now keep your hands raised keep your
hands raised if you know your top three
friends goals challenges and ways that
you can hold them accountable and keep
them supported
Oh everybody’s hands just raised drop
right there’s only like probably two
people in this whole audience now why is
that I believe right now in our
generation where we have over four
thousand Facebook friends and followers
on each platform and a phone full of
contact we have so many relationships
that run wide but not deep
I’m gonna challenge you and I’m gonna
invite you if you want to show up after
you show up or your friends and your
family or the people you see here that
you care about the most I’m gonna invite
you to reach out to them figure out
what’s really important to them how you
can help support them because when they
win you win it it only makes sense to
have your team win right because who
ever heard of the quote there’s an
average of the five people who surround
yourself with everybody right so it only
makes sense to have everybody who you’re
surrounding yourself with winning now
start with showing up for your friends
and your family and actually knowing
what they care about you can help
support them along the way and imagine
imagine this imagine every single person
who you were above with your friends and
your family showed up in your life like
that and had that same attitude
how would it be different how would your
life be different let’s take a step
further in the community what if you all
showed up for everyone else like that in
the community
how would it need to be different a
steel chain
one of the ways that I love to give back
to the community is to help show others
how to show up after they show up with
themselves their friends and their
family in their communities and I do
that through partnering programs like
Junior Achievement where we go to
different elementary schools in high
schools and we teach them about
entrepreneurship we teach them about
financial literacy we teach them about
emotional intelligence and we teach them
the things that the most successful
people do and how they got where they
got those you just stand on the
shoulders of those nine and cut your
learning curve in half because I know
our generation is a little bit impatient
that led me to get inspired to teach
other so I created a course that bridges
the gap between traditional education
which you guys are in right now and
personal development and Jim Rohn said
it best he said a formal education will
make you a living but a self education
will make you a fortune
and I believe that to be so true that’s
why I’m so adamant about teaching
Millennials that happens the skills and
a mindset at the most successful people
use in order so that you can cut your
learning curve and get what you want a
lot but it all starts with investing in
yourself giving to yourself putting that
mask on it’s like if you’re on a plane
put that safety mask on first if you
don’t say save yourself then you won’t
be able to save other then you reach out
to your friends on your family and help
them and you spread it the community so
I know we’re here for an event charge
for change and honestly I don’t believe
any change is going to happen unless we
all make the decision to show up after
we show up and put in a hundred percent
effort
so I’m gonna leave you guys here with
this it’s called a show-up challenge
what is one thing that you can do
leaving this event right now to show up
after you show up for yourself
maybe that’s hitting first method or
getting a book or no conference learning
more about something that you’re
interested in in your industry that
you’re that you’re looking to pursue
maybe how about for showing up after
show up for your friends and your family
figuring out what’s important to them
and helping support them but also maybe
showing up after you show up where your
community
and maybe donating your time your energy
and your resources to help make an
impact
I can guarantee you this one thing if
you make the decision today to show up
after you show up play a hundred percent
and all the areas that matter the most
in your life with yourself your friends
and your family in your community
nothing in your life will ever be the
same
thank you
you
