How to reform the health care system | Adepeju Jaiyeoba | TEDxGbagada

[Music]
24 degrees is the temperature of Legos
at its coolest according to Google but
it just as high as 36 and up to like 42
degrees sometimes when it’s really hot
so you can imagine my shop when I woke
up one morning in Canada we had gone
through for a training four years ago
and I found everybody celebrating in 90
degrees Celsius whether as summer it was
so shocking that my Canadian teammates
Totti was a good day to go to the beach
and as you know we should really go
celebrate this 90 degrees weather but
guess what
here I showed up at the beach so I had
my inner where I had my regular clothes
I had my inner woolen jackets my winter
jacket and the woollen scarf around my
neck that was me as my degrees summer in
Canada I come from Lagos where the
coolest is 24 degrees 24 degrees is my
own winter that is when I put on my
sweater
I apply a bony kibum or any other balm
you know and drink hot tea that’s that’s
my own winter 90 degrees when I ask
winter Osama is not normal to me if I
had stayed long enough in Canada maybe I
will begin to see 90 degrees as normal
but right now it is not normal which
brings me to the title of my talk called
challenging the normal in 2011 I lost a
close friend our child beds and a dad
puts a face behind every statistics of
maternal and child mortality rates I had
ever seen
so you know when you see one in 13 1 in
15 1 in 6 those things are just numbers
to you
also have a deep and real connection to
this numbers that is why you know that
there are real faces behind these
numbers my deep connection was my friend
that died in 2011 and that’s when I knew
that behind every statistics of maternal
and child health there’s a fist to it
their families have been shown in two
solos their children whose life may
never ever be stable to deny a woman
diner childbirth in Nigeria is not know
how a baby
Dinah’s path in Nigeria should never be
considered as normal women having he
eats this for ante natal across rural
communities in Nigeria shouldn’t even
ever ever be normal anyway midwives
having to use their mouth to suck up
mucus from the nurseries of a newborn to
prevent us vision should not be no mouth
and woman to be based on best laws is
never normal
sixty percent of deliveries in Nigeria
are taken by traditional birth
attendants who have no education and our
own skewed that should never be on
normal it should never ever be an amount
so what is normal normal is you refuses
to step out of your comfort zone normal
is you refusing to live a courageous
life and take action normal is you
refusing to hold government’s
accountable normal is another word for
average I’m not normal and you shouldn’t
you shouldn’t ever be normal now let’s
do a quick exercise so now take a look
at this picture these are to forget the
green overgrown grass these are two
functional buildings somewhere in
Nigeria one of it is a public health
care facility the other one is also a
public facility which ones you think is
the public health care facility the one
on the left if you think it’s the one on
the left
let me see your hands the one on your
left if you think that is the public
health care facility good if you think
it’s the one on your right there’s a
public health care facility no let me
show you this one the one on your left
that has the solar panel you quit for
alternative electricity supply and the
borough is not the public health care
facility this other one with the wooden
windows falling apart buildings falling
apart roof is the public health care
facility and you would never ever
imagine what this other facility is it
is the public toilets and is right
beside this falling healthcare facility
things like this and not normally but
guess what somebody like you and I
thought it was a good idea suicides and
ultra modern public toilets beside a
fallen healthcare facility somebody like
you and I dressed up in a sh Y B to go
to this commissioning somebody like you
and I commissioned this building
somebody like you and I was the drama at
the events even though his wife is sick
at home and cannot access policy health
care services these things are not
normal they should never ever be
considered as normal as somebody with a
legal background who has their own love
for figures and I barely passed much as
we’re clever going into maternal and
child health and now business is
something that many would consider not
normal but that’s that’s also because I
am not normal I’m not
this is one of the products of my not
being normal
this is Shafaat sue and our baby in the
Far States northern Nigeria Shikata was
able to access quality health care
supply quality health care facilities
and sterile supplies our childhoods like
several other women who found the
statistics she did not become the one
interesting who died at childbirth
Shafaat who had access to sterile
supplies the bet attendant did not have
to use a broken glass or rusty blade too
severe a baby’s umbilical cord shafraz
who did not have to sit on a high chain
and close our legs family hoping that
postpartum hemorrhage or bleeding after
childbirth would cease a better
attendance had access to community level
intervention drugs like misoprostol to
calm our bleeding after childbirth when
you look at images like this it should
trigger in each one of you the desire
not to be normal desire not to be
average
the desire to outlive yourself the
desire to be outstanding save the lives
of several women and babies like chiffon
and a baby rest on the ideas carried
inside each and every one of us many of
them are waiting for ideas to blues on
so that girls can also come to light
ladies and gentlemen I’m not normal I
hope your engine and so as I leave this
podium today I would like you to think
about something never accept as an
amount something that should never ever
in the first place be nama
be extraordinary be outstanding
challenge the nama
thank you
