hello everyone I’m glad to be here
well just to correct the introduction I
wasn’t the first to bring in a 3d
printer in Nigeria but I think I have
the begins to repent I in Nigeria and
publicly because on West Africa and I
think we built the first indigenous
makerspace and interior here in Abba
[Applause]
Africa imports over 95% of the
survival and existence as a continent
greatly depends on foreign continent
imagine what will happen if they say ok
we’ll send you mobile phones again Rob
use more effort second asses ok no more
TVs are no more refrigerators over ever
we are gone so we rely on foreign
countries and foreign continents
every year we graduated thousands of
engineers but we have very few companies
to engage them unemployment and poverty
they are very high in Africa but one way
out is technology development and
entrepreneurship if we can engage young
people into technology driven and
entrepreneurship we can create massive
employment reduce poverty and build
wealth America is great and wealthy is
technology we can do that is a way out
however to build to produce technologies
without this technological system we
cannot produce technologies in Africa or
in Nigeria the technology ecosystem is
the collision of the people the
institutions the companies and other
resources that are required to produce
technologies so if this is the only way
out so how do we build a technological
system in my sights for answers I came
across a very insightful document
produced by Aspen network of development
entrepreneurs they published a report on
how to strengthen invention based
ecosystems an imagined market this
report was based on investigations
carried out in the United States in
Brazil South Africa Kenya and India so
they identify five gaps that I resistant
in the ecosystems of emerging markets
like Nigeria and Africa there are five
gaps the resistant indigo system which
are financed talent physical capital
market and policy Cubs fans God talks
about inadequate funding for technology
development talent gap talks about the
lack of skills technical skills business
skills physical capital God talks about
the lack of equipment for prototype
development and manufacturing market gap
is about the failure of technology
products in market adoption while policy
gap was about inadequate government
support this report did not provide all
the answers I was looking for
so what’s the technology ecosystem there
are I’ve been able to identify um a
group of components that are acquired in
a technology ecosystem um actually there
are many of them but I believe them down
I’ll be talking about specifically it
had where ecosystem Hardware referred to
physical technology products like a
mobile phone electronics appliances
television and all that I’m talking
about the components of a hardware
ecosystem at the center of this
ecosystem is the inventors or makers
these are the people who identify
problems in society and then they begin
to brainstorm and generate ideas on how
technology can be applied in solving
those problems he is a very serious
problem in Africa killing thousands of
Africans every year
Charlie everyone here so far Somali at
least once a year but malaria is caused
by mosquitoes so the main problem of
malaria is mosquitoes so as an inventor
I got an idea to create a mosquito net
oh the function of data is to eliminate
mosquitoes in people’s rooms all over
Africa so if you have that device in
your house no more mosquitoes do mom
Olivia that’s an idea to proceed with
this idea I need two sets of skills
first technical skills and then business
skills technical skills will enable me
to combine scientific and engineering
principles in creating a device to solve
that problem however business skills we
helped me to do an analysis of that idea
like if I build this product who buy it
how much will they pay
how many a day can I do the business out
of this
so if I’ve done the analysis tonight
this idea will walk anyway how many of
you think if you walk how many think
people would like to buy it mostly that
I’m not oh if you walk will you buy so
as you go ahead okay okay thank you okay
so if this idea is you sell then the
next thing is how we meet some
improvements to beauty prototypes I need
to test it how to create a design and
then do the sample to test it to do that
I need prototyping equipment that 8 or
10 there was diving equipment things
like 3d printers electronic boards CNC
machines and other things that I used to
build prototypes now a lot of ideas and
designs don’t succeed at the prototype
stage you do the design we test it it
doesn’t work so a lot don’t succeed some
others do succeed so let’s assume that
my idea my design my positive works we
yes who will finance the production and
marketing of this my innovation with
investors bring confirm them I’m going
to need another seed manufacturers what
the Megatron’s you do they will take my
prototype and then transform it into
thousands or millions of consumer-ready
finished product but that doesn’t end
there
I’ll need distributors people who cyclic
this my innovation all over the country
and make it easily accessible to
consumers wherever they might be
however I also need government support
it could be in terms of infrastructure
it could be policy let’s assume that the
government is able to provide regular
power supply which will power production
you know part of this possible is
cheaper than running on generators so
this reduce production costs which will
reduce the price of my products
therefore more people who buy it
our say more and become
of it so these are the components of a
technological system now that we’ve seen
the components how exactly should we
build this new system what are the steps
we need from where we are to where we
want to be the first step we need to
take is to build a network we need to
identify people who are into technology
development people like inventors
engineers make us designers and then we
need to set up local support groups in
each city across the country where they
can assess support to do that we can
partner with technology hubs across the
country and then they can assess
different kinds of support from deserves
then we need to develop capacity
Interpol prepare a training program to
train this members of this network in
pure development and entrepreneurship
they need to learn how do you translate
an idea into a product there’s no deep
oceans and then this you know about the
business bit you can end up spending
five insufficiently president no one
wants to buy so they need to those two
skills so have a program to train them
after we’ve trained them they need to
start walking they need to identify
problems in our society that they can
solve and begin to apply the knowledge
they’ve gained to the training in
building prototypes of products that
will solve those problems the next step
would need to take to set up incubation
centers nationwide this centers will
fine-tune their prototypes and then
prepare them to excel they can produce
small form of their prototype maybe 50
pieces or hundred pieces then we need
investment from them so you can provide
funding for production of this
innovation partnership with look
and factors so that in a few years we
don’t have to ask us again I want to
assume that most of us here can imagine
how big the task of using the speaker
system is is very huge
many of us have complained about it
maybe some of us have blamed everyone
else but it’s not enough to complain we
need to do something about it we need to
take action
so absolutely take action the fashion I
did was to do my results and then
develop the blueprint reduction with the
steps only to do so after delivering
this blueprint I now discuss the idea
with a few friends of mine and they love
the added a button to it and together we
will study the movement in Nigeria
called hardware Nigeria community agency
H&C is a national network of Nigerian
inventors makers entrepreneurs who are
committed to indigenous to the
development want to build products to
solve our problems a vision to build a
successful ecosystem in Nigeria to
transform the interior into a technology
producer interestingly agency has been
growing in two months we’ve established
three chapters in abba in you in a way
and i’m talking to you right now we are
not getting a fourth chapter in levels
[Applause]
the first chapter was no pain in our
hair at a makerspace my mega mattress
padamu Beauty Clinton Innovation Center
on 27th April this year second chapter
into you at start innovation hope to
have me over to the 6th of May today
Legos the massive support we’ve received
shows that perhaps this idea is an idea
hesitancy we perform a lot of supportive
functions for inventors and filmmakers
such as random access to skills
equipment for put that development
investors manufacturers distributors and
government support this is Obama with me
and his friend a Cheeto at our make a
space yeah in about Clinton a Innovation
Center CIC
they are engineering students of the
rapid technically negative building a
new product and electronic device so we
came to CIC for support input of design
and development so here I was guiding
them with put a design here I wasn’t
telling them to 3d printing they were
observing a 3d printer as it use
prototype now the printer is the
computer-controlled machine which
transforms computer designs computer
joints into physical prototypes so just
design your part design your Tencent
dimension you to beauty to deform it
physically you can see the country can
use it so this is about the biggest size
of to the printer in Australia and is
right here with us in about now
imagine what if we have a technology
ecosystem in Nigeria to support
thousands of young people like Obama and
ADA to transform their ideas into
finished products imagine Mahara will
create abundant employment reduce
poverty reduce crime the program will be
engaged they will have time for crime
development djpick neurologically and
then Nancy will become self-reliant not
input everything again with cameras
importation and ultimately will be
building a better world
I’ve stopped complaining of the
connection now we are building the
interior of our dream join us in this
great journey to view the future thank
you [Applause]
