How to Be Remembered | Dana Denis-Smith | TEDxRoyalTunbridgeWells

[Music]
hi whether you have a wedding ring or a
wedding gown or a bunch of photographs
or a book of recipes this is typically
what girls inherits from their mothers
as a gift of the past it is something
that makes us very excited as we walk
out down the aisle that we wear our
grandmother’s gown I for one I was very
delighted when I inherited my
grandmother’s wedding ring it wasn’t for
the preciousness of it
it is a black hint ring that has no
value except for me it is an incredible
gift to have been given with the stories
that it contains and in fact I was so
attached to it that I brought it here
today to show you and maybe for luck I’m
sure many of you have stories like this
but what I discovered is that women and
men have a way of archiving their life
in a very different way warm in Center
themselves on the family the men center
themselves on their achievement and I
wanted to change that I wanted to create
something that empowered women to be
remembered in a different way like a
tapestry in history it is very important
that we don’t let it be rotten or be
left with lots of holes as we forgotten
in a drawer and women have to bring this
history together to create the best
possible and most perfect tapestry there
is because biography is what makes
history it is what we live today and
what we leave to the others that will
create the judgment that we will be
faced in the future as this court quite
clearly says there is no such thing as
history
there’s only biography and that is our
lives so three years ago I discovered a
really interesting photograph it was
centered on a woman and it was a good
photograph from the legal profession
date in 1982 and he had one woman in the
middle I was very excited there were
very few photographs are centered on a
woman I wasn’t interested in the objects
she had on her or the dress she wore I
was interested in what she thought how
did it feel to be the only one what did
she do when the dinner finished this was
an anniversary dinner a hundred years of
this law firm existing how did it feel
when everybody retired to the billiard
room of smoking-room and the old man and
you might not even be allowed in their
room and I wanted to find her story
because very often we as women give the
objects of our lives to our future
generations but we don’t give the whole
stories about ourselves what is it that
we believe in what are our Diaries if we
keep them what is the life that we enjoy
and the detail around it beyond the
objects that we pass on and I realized
the history of woman is very patchy
because in setting out to build a
digital project around this photograph I
found out the woman had been in the
legal profession for less than a hundred
years before then they were legally not
allowed to be lawyers in fact they were
not allowed to be any type of
professional what as it is today and to
create a better archive for women coming
through the legal profession in the
future I felt it is imperative that we
create and gather a collection of facts
that can really empower them to
understand where they’re coming from to
give them a cohesive timeline that they
can belong to a little bit like a family
tree they needed to create a
professional tree in this journey of
finding and building an archive I have
discovered that the picture is entirely
cracked up
it is very patchy of the first eight
women that became lawyers in 1922 we
have one biography and that was
published in 2017 we don’t even have
photographs of each one of them the
history of women is impoverished unless
we do something to change it
because we can’t really understand the
future without understanding the past
but of course when the photograph of
1982 days you know that
inspiration behind the project was taken
the landscape in the world was no
different the woman in the middle in the
legal profession was the same woman in
the middle everywhere else
woman did not participate in public life
if you take this photograph from 1983 it
showed the same picture one woman in the
middle and this is very much a picture
that remained the same – in 1990 and
then I discovered that in the last
hundred years although there are nearly
200 countries in the world we have not
even had 200 woman leaders in the world
we’ve had a hundred and forty-three
women that led nations either as Prime
Minister or presidents in hundred years
of a history the other thing I
discovered is that 19 of those came from
a country called San Marino I have no
idea how many of you have heard of it
but I can tell you one interesting fact
that country is half the size of this
very town it gave us more than 10% of
the women leaders in the world in the
last hundred years this is an incredible
way of discovering your past by putting
together and piecing together this
historic tapestry but making sure we
don’t forget to correct it and that we
fill the gaps so as I said before it is
impossible to understand the future
without understanding your past and I’m
here to try and help you and empower
actually men and women alike although
men are incredibly good compared to
women at doing this much better I want
to give you three ways in which you can
change this and I would like you to do
it when you get home the first thing you
can do is to collect the second thing
you can do is stop serve and the third
thing you can do is to record it’s a
nice way of putting it the biography
that you build centers on you it is your
story you are the core and actually even
though those photographs were very
strange to me when I first saw them it
is okay to be the center of an image as
long as you are putting the core collect
observer record into that picture and
make sure you leave more than one
photograph when you
so to live by my own rules I decided to
go and look into my own archives and
discover what can I collect or what have
I collected over my lifetime this is me
this is me in the year that the
photograph was taken what was I doing I
was in the middle of Transylvania
completely oblivious to this situation
of women leaders in the world I had no
idea feminism and existed at this point
so I was in no way prepped to be an
equality fighter from an early age I can
assure you but this is what really
shocked me this is the entirety of my
photographic collection this is my
visual archive up to the age of 16 I
grew up on the communism we didn’t
really have many things and this is
something that until I took a deliberate
action to document my life I made a lot
of assumptions about how much I had and
in fact I have very little so one thing
that is very simple to do go and look
into what you have and make sure what
you think you have you do have the other
thing you need to do is top serve we all
do many interesting things in fact we
have so many experiences in life we
don’t really observe in a way that is
the lasting way of observing for example
probably the easiest way to describe it
is charity donations each one of us
makes choices around what we donate for
the causes we believe in the purpose in
life that we set for ourselves those
things are the observations the history
will be able to create a character out
of our life if you’re passionate about
children as opposed to helping elderly
people that will tell something a story
about you it enriches and Maps your life
in a better way and recording recording
is incredibly important because really
everything you recall will go into your
box of memories your life will be all in
that box and we you know in the in the
age of technology you can say well
there’s so much in my memory box on
snapchat just remember it is appears in
a second or do you think there’s a lot
there’s hardly anything only
in the world so make a very very
proactive effort to document your life
by recording Diaries by recording the
speeches you give by recording and
writing the thoughts that you have by
making sure that everything you believe
in has something that leaves a trace
because if you want to be remember you
have to remember one thing we all live
life forward but in fact our life is
only understood backwards thank you very
much
