what’s the third largest cause of death
in the United States visa T ok ok old
age it’s actually medical treatment yeah
I know who would have thought it around
a quarter of a million Americans die
every year as a result of attempts to
heal them I know to put those figures
into context some of those people were
at the end of their life anyway when
quite rightly so doctors will do
whatever they can to actually help their
patients at this time of need but
actually they’re not doing whatever they
can they’re doing what works within the
model that they have been trained in in
2002 I thought I had it all I was
traveling worldwide living in country
amazing countries I was living what some
would call a dream and I’ve made and I
had this success through the success of
my job as a business journalist but what
I soon came to realize was actually I
wasn’t living my dream what I was doing
was interesting and it was lucrative but
I had stopped growing and growing is how
we know that we’re alive I came to my
senses in India the ninth country I had
lived him within a four year period and
something just felt magical about the
place and it wasn’t just returning to my
roots it was the the smell the cultures
the energy the vibe there was just
something very very special about the
country as I set foot and started
walking the land in Kerala I was
actually introduced to breathing
techniques which go back centuries and
it’s no accident that respiration and
inspiration are words that both point
power of drawing air into our bodies in
the Christian tradition God breathed
spirit into humans and animals we may
say that spirit winks at us from
respiration and inspiration relaxed on a
wooden bed I had the most amazing
massage I have ever had in my life
the therapists hardly touched me who
knows what they were doing but something
inside me responded and I knew my life
was going to be about discovering how
what I was experiencing in India could
be shared with people who need new
options in their paths to recovery when
people talk about seeing a GP they offer
make allowances
we know the constraints the NHS is under
mean an appointment to see your doctor
will last just a few minutes in that
time your doctor is expected to diagnose
what’s up with you and prescribe
something that will help you and that
something is most likely going to take
the form of a tablet hopefully that
tablet will sort out whatever is going
on with you but there have been times
when I’ve had an appointment I didn’t
feel listened to I’ve worked out of that
appointment with a prescription I
haven’t taken it to the chemist because
actually I know what’s going on inside
me a tablet is not going to resolve that
issue of course drugs can work I really
am NOT taking away from the power and
the sense of allopathic medicine but
before now I’ve gone to see a florist
and had a richer warmer chat with the
florist talked about what’s going on
with me and actually walked out as a
florist with a bunch of flowers that
over the years I’ve had appointments
with doctors who knew more about the
pancreas than being able to communicate
with their patients the medical model is
amazing
but just like any model it has its
limitations I’ve actually heard it
claimed that putting money into updating
the UK sewage system would have bigger
health benefits than investing the same
in hospitals and that points to a
fundamental truth there are actually
factors to do with social and
environmental issues that make an impact
on our health these are not addressed in
our current model you could validly
claim that the Indian system undervalue
science but what it does do is provide a
proper way of understanding and
responding to a whole person and that
might be the person’s relationships
their culture their emotions their
history all of these things impact our
health on a daily basis and that’s the
future I’m committed to in the work that
I’m doing now there are many routes to
greater well-being and some ideas would
have seemed impossible years ago they’re
now getting taken more seriously thanks
to research results I do believe we need
to be scrupulous about the ideas that we
take up naturally and history shows us
that it can take time for new ideas to
be accepted and I want to share some of
those ideas with you in the 19th century
Ignace Semmelweis was convinced surgeons
should wash their hands but doctors took
offense at what he was saying even
though he could actually prove
immortality mortality rates would drop
if they used disinfectant he actually
ended up getting put in an asylum and it
wasn’t until Louis Pasteur and Joseph
lists
took up his concepts years later that
his work actually became mainstream
today there is a scientist called Dean
Radin Dean Radin discovered that
blessings have a measurable effect on
people he actually got Buddhist monks to
bless tea and he gave people random cups
of it some of it was blessed
some of it was unblessed the rapporteur
difference in how good people felt
between those who correctly believed
they drank blessed he and those given
unblessed tea who believed it was
unblessed was actually around a thousand
percent skepticism about Raiden about
the results raiding claims is
understandable but his backers include a
Nobel laureate in physics and a chair of
even though it’s a physical level
there’s seemingly no difference between
the two teas the subjective experience
he measures tells a different story
Raiden hopes to do a follow-up
experiment with McDonald’s and he’s
actually been if asked to present his
ideas at a pharmaceutical conference the
current generation of medical
practitioners I do believe are more
willing to embrace alternatives they
have seen people experience the benefits
of herbal treatments of meditation and
of dietary change there are aware that
we exist not just as physical beings but
as social beings whose well-being is
effective from everything from Facebook
all the way to the weather now I’d like
to invite you to picture a medical
consultation it’s some years from now
the space is calming this plants in the
room and there’s a lovely view through
the window
you’ve already responded
questions from an artificial
intelligence so your doctor has a pretty
good idea of why you’re coming to see
them today in the initial 15 minutes
which I understand is far longer than we
are we are able to spend with a doctor
today which is around about three
minutes the emphasis is actually on
putting the facts that they are aware of
in the context of the person sitting in
front of them there’s an opportunity to
talk about what’s going on in your life
the feelings and the fears that you may
have around work family precious
responsibilities relationships all of
the things that may be coming up with
you on a day to day basis and maybe
they’re just boiling up inside and this
is something that you’re just not able
to share in your day-to-day life the
doctor’s response might be to prescribe
medicine but this is with the option of
preparations made by practitioners who
actually respond to an individual’s
personality type bodywork is another
possibility we are learning more and
more about the fascia and the way it
impacts well-being massage and other
physical interventions could also be
part of this health program this is an
area of expertise that I work in and you
know we know that working with this
covering I like to think of it it’s it’s
like the equivalent of a piss on a
citrus fruit and it’s protecting our
organs and our muscles conventional
surgery remains an option to of course
and then there’s a wider spectrum of
healing tools we have CBT we can also
let’s hear it for counseling let’s hear
it for jeonggyun therapy let’s hear it
for hypnosis all of these incredible
tools that are there they are there they
insured but probably not at the
mainstream level we’re actually more of
us could benefit from some of these
experiences back in the 19th century
hypnosis was used in operating theaters
and on battlefields to prepare patients
for surgery and it was only when
advocates of nitrous oxide lied about
their rivals saying that people just
pretend
ended not to feel pain when their limbs
were amputated that hypnosis actually
fell out of favor now we know that
working with the spectrum of human
consciousness can make a huge impact on
healing and 21st century tools and
techniques make use of the latest
technologies as well as ancient
spiritual practices there is work to do
we do know that the health care in the
NHS is in a crisis and whatever the
future of the NHS we can only benefit by
exploring newer ways of thinking
older ways to the methods I embrace are
actually about sustaining health rather
than dealing with illness and this is in
line with government policy not least
because supporting people to get well
and stay well actually costs less than
dealing with the consequences the road
ahead is a long one and it does involve
again at how doctors and nurses are
trained and it’s about educating people
to take greater responsibility for their
own well-being all of this points to a
wider range of healthcare providers and
practitioners working in and responsive
to the communities that they actually
serve broadly speaking the Western route
to health is outside in you see what’s
going on with somebody you correlate
that with what other people have
experienced which seems more or less the
same and you prescribe a treatment based
on that conclusion the eastern approach
is to understand what’s actually
happening within someone and use that as
a basis of intervention and that will
impact them then on the outside neither
of these approaches works in every
circumstance and my own experience of
medicine was actually Western for
decades and it wasn’t until I actually
found a profound imbalance and I
discovered what I discovered in India
that I was actually fortunate enough to
benefit from the what we would still can
Sidda alternative tools today I have
heard similar stories from countless
other people and that’s why I’m now
actively and passionately involved in
proliferating effective complementary
health approaches as an Ayurvedic
practitioner as a teacher and as a
product innovator I launched a company
13 years ago and within that period we
have trained close to a thousand
individuals in the holistic concepts
that I’m sharing with you today what
we’re doing isn’t working and it’s
profoundly wrong that people are dying
as a result of treatment that they’re
having alternatives are not being
addressed between us I do believe we can
create a better future altogether my
name is Anita thank you for your time [Applause]
