How language creates your mental health | Lisa Luxx | TEDxUniversityofYork

so today I’m going to talk to you about
how words are the creator and destroyer
of our realities how the totality of
everything that you know and do has been
constructed by the words that have been
said to you now when I was a child I had
this vision that to escape this world
and transcend up to heaven without ever
happened to die was a task for a poet
who could express the meaning of that I
imagined this God waiting for me I was
like seven years old I throw in a
imagine this God waited me to crack his
cold and once I could adequately explain
why we are here
I’d be beamed up to this palace superior
it sounds like a crazy idea but if you
haven’t noticed we’re all doing it here
every idea that we try to explain to
communicate and to share is really a
claim that we that I know the truth and
I finally found the words to share it
with you so this became my game
rearranging words to try and open up
doorways into better worlds and so up
again my life is a poet and now I write
for a living and so I know it when I say
works will never suffice to capture the
inexpressible experience of life now the
one thing that I’ve written about more
than anything else is the hairline
cracks in my mental health if I’m
shrinking too hard and I just break open
it’s happened once or twice and I’ve
been dunked into psychosis and words
would undermine how that feels
what I could say of what happened would
be like a like a doodle of what was real
did anybody did anyone here used to play
the sins right it was this computer game
where you and built houses and bought
things for these little humans who you
might watch die and get a sadistic
setting them on fire now if you scrolled
past the edges of the house you wound up
in this gray area where there was
nothing about because that was the place
you had not built now let’s imagine that
gray area is the great unspoken that is
where madness lies but I put to you the
most interesting spaces are the ones we
can’t describe the empty places are so
full of possibilities that flicker
endless through the mind that 21 I was
put on medication told I was anxious and
depressed and so I began taking that
diagnosis with water every day
go pin down the words that my doctor
would say when I try to explain how it
felt being alive shuffling words in my
chest to communicate best how hard it
felt to survive and dr. sweet doctor
would reply with the one minute and 57
seconds I had left of his time here’s a
prescription and this is a label you can
wear and so others know you’re unstable
and so I became all he spoke into being
fulfilling what he had said of me
because we do that we humans we we name
things to make you act accordingly
imagine all the things that you could do
with the table if you didn’t look at it
like oh well that’s a table yeah the
reactor basically our boat you could be
a fence he could be a an oak made of
wood full of meaning that you have to
decipher before it morphs into another
being now I’ve got a niece who’s still
younger than two and when I first met
her she was just a few weeks old she was
looking at her hands for the very first
time because a baby’s vision grows bit
by bit to ease them into coping with all
of this and the way that she looked at
her fingers that day has slowly started
to fade away because in the last year
we’ve been teaching her words but so
instead
look at her things we wonder she can
just be heard saying blow doggy Cara
granddad fighting a finger and really
like mad because she knows something and
she can tell you she knows it and that
is what we spend the rest of our life
showing so now she no longer looks at
the things she knows my name is if there
anything more than the sum of those X’s
she’s trying to say but when I stopped
repeating that I was anxious and
depressed I realized actually I’m just
channeling a world that’s on its head so
much has happened on this planet no pain
and loves and we can ever manage to
compute and the minds of mongers there
are that extra bit sensitive there are
some knows were trying more than anyone
else to really make sense of it yet the
insane they’ve seen it like these a
fairground mirrors reflecting a
distorted view of the safe narratives we
humans play on loop this whole talk is
kind
delivered in a rhyme in a rhythm yeah
okay not to be indulgent mostly to show
the narrowband of all these symbols me
speak cuz though we converse on a
multitude of topics they’re generally
restricted to the same core beliefs that
there is hierarchy there is some greater
force whether you believe it to be a la
goddess or gravity or money you know
anything you can confirm with your
senses definitely real but every word
you’ve ever said was born from how you
feel your language he’s so idiosyncratic
based on meaning only you could make
only you will ever know the depth of
everything every word that you’ve ever
said this hidden subtext when others
just see the surface the word it’s like
a looking at the earth and seen only the
grass and not the the modern soil and
molten lava that bring it out on mass
and equally to understand the grass is
to understand the air the wind and the
oxygen which make up the emotional
landscape of the person who listens you
know now we’re starting to see how every
word has mother goes and heard than that
which goes spoken now we invest in the
infrastructure of of shared reality with
common language that is to say that we
you know something’s real if we
communally agree that it is real but at
what point is our communal agreement
fail we all know and use the word unsafe
but we witness it on a sliding scale and
if some may be afraid daily of war and
some may be afraid of it let me draw
I’ll come back to that now when you and
I top a political fear it might sound
like we’re on different sides because
I’m a talk of mama earth and refugees
and you may talk of trade routes in
global economy but
there is a match in our underlying drive
which is I hope the dying tomorrow’s
survived so if we can move past the
divisive nough screed by our
storytelling device maybe we can stop
making a bus feel ostracized for
interpreting existence differently just
because of the linguistics they’ve
absorbed while alive and there is
something so powerful in hearing the
words me too but you only get to hear
when you open your heart with the
language you use but I will us to
recognize that statement between the
gaps in what we say but in all these
chats that we have every day there’s the
spouse and things going on said what
beneath every conversation is silence
and it’s that which binds us all because
it contains the underworld of unspoken
through which no matter mangas sometimes
fall now let’s take this back to BC in
the fifth century before Christ the
turret was written by the philosopher
gorgeous
they named on a non-existent and the
text states four things one nothing
exists – if something exists nothing can
be known a bit three if something can be
known a bit the knowledge could not be
communicated and far even if it can be
communicated it cannot be understood now
without trying to go from them also I
mean I focus here on three and four now
what I interpreted these to mean and
everyone I shared this with ready if for
me is that wisdom is not something that
we can discuss our language was a
logical tool of survival or if she liked
subscrible because there’s some
historians like you’ve all know a
Ferrari would argue
humans capability to communicate is what
Lecter has taken over the world no once
language developed we could cooperate
and build groups and that snowballs but
logic is different wisdom it is logic is
information and wisdom where our ways be
lost in translation after my first ever
romantic ceremony the shaman said to me
don’t tell anybody else what you’ve seen
it is not for them and it will not fit
inside the bottle that we send when we
speak and if you try and split the
inside these bottles well you’ll make
the message weak and the paper will
disintegrate and there’ll only be an
impression left to read and so my
friends you will witness things in your
life that you can’t fit into words and
that’s because the lesson was never
meant for anyone will you to have heard
and so I believe gorgeous to be
confirming to me that the smart person
the smart person may be full of answers
full of answers but the wise person has
only questions that they accept words
will never complete and if I explain how
or why I’ll delete every other
possibility and by the way the most
appropriate thing happened to honor a
non-existent the original text was
entirely lost I love that I feel it
somehow makes this point now the problem
is that we build our perception on that
singularity so we’ve coded reality on
the narratives we weave think of
language is the HTML of the world off
screen you and I are contained in the
context of stories from before his ideas
so old
we no longer question them anymore we
should always be clothed everything is
divided into good and evil and the
masculine or the opposite the feminine
people but upon these all
Hales we build our value of what’s
reasonable but in there in indigenous
tribes the schizophrenic is sent to
become the next shaman the wise person
why because when one loses their grip on
reason this particular perception of
reality may start to slip away and that
will show them something about how it
was built in the first place and that
that that is wisdom so should we take
artistic license with our own eyes we
can be liberated by now seeing this web
of natural lies you know so what’s this
– well you’re a little loose in mind
celebrate this giving you the space you
need to now design your life we create
who will be tomorrow by how we speak of
ourselves today me I wasn’t always this
strong and sassy I just tried it that
way
equally we can we can alter our memory
by the by the way the phrases that we
used to relive them so all the time we
invest more in the version that we’ve
told then the moment as it was when the
truth would first unfold around us you
know and that’s to the present moment
well if I say oh I am having a bad day
I’m more inclined to continue having a
bad day if I say Who the growing pains
are real today I’m more inclined to
learn from that state of discomfort now
last year when I came off my medication
my mum said something to me and I always
thought she wasn’t really tuned in to
how overwhelmed I was feeling but she
was she confirmed that when she looked
in my eyes and explained I never wanted
you to be diagnosed because I knew that
you would believe what they were saying
I’m so it’s time for me to have a chat
with my seven-year-old self because she
she
and claim to write or even know a shared
reality even if there was one universal
one entity the could universally agree
or the humans emotional bodies would
manipulate what she means and then she’d
just be like that doctor and the only
thing I was to prescribe to everybody is
a history and silence so then we could
build a fresh inclusive symbiosis you
know that doctor that doctor wholly
agrees what tells me is me who has seen
people I love and body their diagnosis
because the word gave them something to
pin all that felt uncertain so I invite
you to see when words are being
destructive now when when a an unwonted
narrative starts playing out in my head
which is often one of paranoia and
deeply unreasonable dread
well I swap it was sound that gives me
surge of energy rather than perpetuate
this story how it’s normal for me to be
feeble so I’ll open my cutlery drawer
where I’m always convinced I’m gonna
meet thousands of beetles and either out
loud or between my ears I’m going right
and I’m liberated that sound you see so
I wait from within that I just ride all
the way out and I imagine that when I
tell myself the story of The Beatles I’m
like pushing something inside of my head
and that is how we become full of dread
whereas when I make the noise the
vocalization I’m letting some pronounce
and stay and so we ain’t gonna stop
using words we ain’t gonna stop playing
with words I definitely ain’t but
consider this a bid that we use them
with my integrity
you know you I’ve lost my game basically
I’ve lost my game but it set me free
my mental state can never be contained
in one explanation is constantly
evolving and will lead redefining and in
this hyper communicative age know that
you are more than the song of the words
that describe you
you could never be contained in a
Twitter bio and all the rules about how
to conduct our life it’s made up your
story your human experience
that’s only your’s – right
