interact with us and our world see what
we see through our eyes but with
Cameron’s fear what we feel in our hands
but with touch sensors reason how we
reason in our minds but with algorithms
so what about a world where intelligent
machines are everywhere and working with
us imagine our cities where intelligent
machines operate around us doing
everyday things think about it and focus
on each intelligent machine one by one
now think about it again intelligent
machines may not always take on the
first form that you see in your mind let
me paint some key machines into your
picture a swarm of drones are flying
overhead to deliver a package to a house
around the corner a small mobile robot
is holding the leash of an excited dog
both heading towards the park a fleet of
driverless cars are pulling up to pet
take people to work for the day this
city is flowing people are lively and
each day is moving forward one by one
people are going about their day just
like they would any other day this
future city is at an intersection of
life energy and peace can you imagine
the day when we reach that moment a day
when intelligent machines have knowledge
purpose and ability to help us with
everything we have ever wanted in our
life a day when intelligent machines can
reason perceive and act just like us to
help you with what you want to do and in
doing so live out the childhood dream
where the gadgets and the robots we all
wanted
see and now real I am excited about
creating this future in which humans and
intelligent machines are working
together for the benefit of everyone
humans excel at what we do naturally
such as being social having a vivid
imagination and having empathy for each
other intelligent machines excel at what
we can’t do naturally such as being able
to translate a phrase into any foreign
language navigating through large
unknown locations and picking up the
same item for hours and hours and hours
when we put these two powerful things
together and then direct them towards
the same end goal can we make that
vision a reality
my research is focusing on exactly this
problem on the integration of artificial
intelligence behavioral science and
robotics to find new ways to create
human-like machines to work with people
on everyday problems humans as
individuals will benefit greatly when
intelligent machines can help us in our
daily tasks humans are at the center of
these benefits with the main goal to
keep us happy healthy and in high
spirits in the future intelligent
machines can carry your groceries keep
your house clean and even keep you
company who wouldn’t want a smarter home
and service robot to do all the chores
yet there is an important role for us to
play in this vision we need to teach
intelligent machines what we want them
to do how to engage with us and how to
work more effectively with people for
instance we need to guide intelligent
machines to act in new scenarios like
how to tidy up your room and how to set
up your workspace people are creating
and shaping intelligent systems every
day we need to guide intelligent
machines to follow our ethics morals and
values to achieve the outcomes we want
but do you know what I’m really excited
about
intelligent machines not just helping
individuals but doing even more for us
as a society intelligent machines allow
us to reach our highest potential as a
civilization they generate even greater
strengths when we work with them to
solve problems in society intelligent
machines can extend our limit
intelligent machines will work
continuously to increase our access to
valuable resources such as fruits and
minerals they create even better
environments for us such as the delivery
of mental health care and even smart
machinery to help with heavy lifting
this extends to an into environments not
previously thought possible like space
exploration without ever having to risk
a human life above all else they will
come to our aid when we are in danger a
drone to deliver emergency supplies to a
remote area or even a rescue robot to
help recover a trap person after a
natural disaster humans and intelligent
machines will create a progressive
society all for people a positive
synergy between humans and intelligent
machines will bring out the best in each
other there may come a time where we
start to see similar levels of machine
intelligence and capabilities compared
to a human there are still things that
keep us from having intelligent machines
in our cities right now for example
their ability to deal with unpredictable
scenarios yet in this very moment
machine intelligence and robotic systems
are improving their perception and
understanding of our world well
intelligent machines are starting to
learn how to classify different objects
such as pedestrians and cars understand
spoken language and predict health
outcomes based on daily information
there are still some shortcomings for
intelligent machines such as common
sense
robot researchers like myself are
working together to enable us to work
with intelligent machines in more useful
ways for example finding a link between
cognitive and computer sciences to
identify how a person deals with new
information and unpredictable scenarios
and teaching a machine to do the same
thing we will start to see fewer
differences over time between humans and
intelligent machines enabling them to
closer interact with us
I am highly anticipating the day that we
can create a human-like machine that can
interact with us and our world the same
way that we do creating a synergy is a
necessary next step it is the only way
to have intelligent machines in and
around people
we have shaped this world into our own
image to suit our needs wants and skills
think about an average day everything

for you to use intelligent machines will
have to deal with the same things for
example pushing on a door to get into
the building picking up a glass of water
with a hand finding your way around
campus by reading signs the world is
ultimately a human creation for humans
it is not possible to have intelligent
machines in our society that do not
understand our world and the way that we
operate it we need to have intelligent
machines be able to interact with our
world the way that we do or be able to
understand how we use those things to
integrate into our society let’s step
back into our futuristic City once again
an autonomous car can now safely drive
you down the road next to a person on a
bike on a busy street the car can now
predict the cyclists movements read
street signs and plan how to drive
around the city in the same way you
would
a service robot can work with you to
hand you objects and help you complete a
task the service robot can now
understand spoken language identify what
you are likely to ask for next and know
how to pass you an object an intelligent
device can provide reliable and
specialized health care when you are at
home and feeling unwell the device can
now understand your symptoms and
identify a treatment that is likely to
work best for you people put their life
in the hands of machines everyday from
computers to cars intelligent machines
must be able to react in a similar way
that a person would in the same
situation this life is only achievable
when intelligent machines can learn
think and act more like people once this
has been achieved we can finally have
the gadgets robots and future cities we
have all wanted to see in our life I
know that this will happen because this
is what we work on in the lab every
single day intelligent machines will
revolutionize the future beyond anything
we have ever seen humans have a lot to
gain with intelligent machines as our
