How human development & habitat conservation can cohabitate | Cole Agenbroad | TEDxMiamiUniversity

[Music]
the goal of humanity is to conquer
nature we tried to tame it and we did we
tried to survive it and we did reuse it
for profit as a status symbol and we
avoid it as much as possible we have
insulated housing climate-controlled
vehicles we even have machines that make
clouds if the air is too dry I was
reading a local paper in which they were
talking about a new interchange that was
being put in more roads and businesses
were being built they were talking about
how they wanted to deal with the dark
spots for development these dark spots
were natural untouched habitats the
owner of the cement company and the
developers were all awarded for their
leadership when we talked about progress
on a global scale we tend to value money
the most making a profit earning a
return on investment developing a nation
what tends to be lost is nature habitat
we don’t tend to take into account the
value of a tree nor do we care about the
impact that a housing development or
Road will have on the dynamics of the
ecology when we ship the larger a
Natural Area is the more biodiversity
and biomass accan support 1 10,000 acre
habitat patch can support more species
of wildlife than 10 1000 acre habitat
patches but why is such a large Natural
Area important plooey the wolf was was
caught in Banff Canada in 1991 she was
fitted with a GPS collar and released
the next day they went out and weren’t
able to find her signal over the course
of a week they had gone out several
times in a helicopter and still weren’t
able to find her it turns out that over
the course of a few months
had managed to travel over 40,000 square
miles across the United States and
Canadian border twice through two
provinces three states and a total of 30
political boundaries the importance of
having such a large Natural Area is the
ability for plooey to be able to roam
over her entire range with as little
impact to her as possible as we continue
to develop the world when we talk about
dark spot of nature we don’t tend to
take into account the value of a tree
nor do we care about the value of a
forest a tree will stop flooding prevent
soil erosion a forest changes climates
causes rains provides the air that we
breathe the flora
Kirsti ceases and the ability to walk
into a natural area animal
infrastructure that is what we need the
ability for animals to be able to roam
through between habitat patches with as
little impact to them as possible and as
a little impact to us as possible this
doesn’t need to be overly large or cut
directly through the center of a city
this only needs to be able to bridge one
habitat patch with another allowing for
a network of connected habitat
throughout a county state or country
increasing both the wildlife health and
it’s better for the animals this is
already being done there is a tiger
corridor between China and Russia there
is one in the garo hills of India in
Western Canada and the eastern Himalayas
the problem is that we don’t tend to
take into account nature by jurisdiction
in my time researching in Banff Canada I
found that in Banff they were able to
remove a building if it was deemed to
have a negative impact on the
environment while ten miles south and
Kenmore they were focused on building
directly to the edges of the valley
focused more on development and profit
rather than nature
five more miles into Calgary and it was
wide open plains the ability for an
animal to roam whichever way it so
pleased these variances are what needs
to be addressed highway is only useful
if you’re able to drive all the way to
your destination rather than facing
continuous dead ends the cost of fixing
nature fixing the natural world is great
but it’s one that we’ve placed on
ourselves and it’s a very solvable
problem we don’t we see the value of
having a forest in listening to a bird
sing or watching a field of flowers
bloom these things are bright spots the
beauty that the natural world gives to
us having a corridor is not the loss of
value of land that a strip mall could
have been but rather an increase if we
make a change we save massive amounts of
money we stop soil erosion we prevent
flooding we have cleaner water and
cleaner air it’s simple all you have to
do is contact your senator or your mayor
go to a town hall meeting and say how
important having a tech connected
habitat is for you or if you don’t want
to deal with the government go into your
backyard and plant native species
instead of maintaining a lot one
decision by one person has a great
impact and when we all make a decision
for nature we all win thank you
