How Do We Build Trust Into The Internet Of Things (IOT)? | Daniel Price | TEDxUniversityofNevada

we have this concept of the here-and-now
this place at this moment and if we stop
for a second and think about this it’s
actually a rather interesting concept
because we as humans we live in the here
and now but we don’t feel that
constrained by it in fact quite the
opposite we often struggle to even feel
present in the here and now and this is
cause we’ve invented technology that
expands our awareness ways to transfer
our here and now experience to others in
this way we’re able to receive news from
around the globe we work across
continents but what I want to note here
is that there are humans on both sides
of the equation and they communicate
through some sort of medium so if you
remove that communication element once
again were constrained to our own senses
and our own immediate surroundings I’ll
give a simple example of this you’re at
work and you realize you may have left
your stove on at home well what do you
do if someone’s at home you just give
them a call and they go check the stove
easy but if no one’s there you’re kind
of stuck you’ll have to wait till you
get back home and you can check yourself
now this is peculiar to me because we
aren’t talking about some sort of
unknowable schroeder stove paradox here
the stoves either on or off and in fact
the stove knows if it’s on or off is
there a way could communicate that to us
well the answer is yes but it may sound
odd at first we connect the stove to the
Internet now bear with me bear with me I
know stoves aren’t supposed to be
connected to the internet computers are
connected to the internet cell phones
yes TVs maybe we’ll allow it but
definitely not stoves their role is to
heat up our food but let’s say we throw
out common decency we connect the stove
to the internet with the Internet
connected stove we could check on it
no matter where we are in a way we’d be
expanding our awareness to include that
of the stoves now this notion
of connecting everyday objects to the
Internet is known as the Internet of
Things or IOT and while it might seem
straightforward it has far-reaching
effects just imagine anything a machine
could sense we could sense through it
anything a machine could do we could do
with the Internet of Things we would no
longer be constrained to our human
senses
now this isn’t futuristic daydreaming in
fact the Internet of Things is already
happening I’ll give an example of IOT
benefiting our communities already today
internet connected sensors are being
deployed in city dumpsters they monitor
the level of trash and report this data
to the trash collection service they use
this information to optimize the driving
routes so that only full dumpsters are
visited this simple thing it turns out
can increase the efficiency of the
system by 90 percent while reducing
vehicle emissions as well and this is
just a small part of the story the
global investment into IOT last year was
500 billion dollars it’s the size of the
entire United States military budget and
this is communities and businesses
investing into improved efficiencies
creating smarter products and crafting a
more connected world however for all of
this
IOT is still just in its nascent we’re
at the cusp of what’s to come
now I’m someone who builds IOT products
and so my goal here today is to take us
through a journey of just what is coming
in IOT what should we be excited about
what should we watch out for and what
might all this mean in our day to day
lives so here we go number one
IOT is a social network we’re familiar
with social networks Facebook LinkedIn
Twitter however these are human to human
networks IOT introduces devices machines
into our social networks IRT is a system
and a language for us to communicate
with these devices and for them to
communicate
back to us but where things get
especially interesting is in this world
of IOT devices we’ll also talk to each
other now you may be conjuring up images
of the movie Toy Story where the humans
leave all the toys wake up they begin
talking and in a way this isn’t too far
away from reality there are already IOT
children’s toys and this aspect of
machines talking to machines is
incredibly central the IOT devices can
compare notes they can learn from each
other they grow up they socialize they
improve over time this is what makes IOT
not just a new tool not just a new
technology or invention but it’s the
start of a whole new social landscape
that includes humans and machines now a
metric worth mentioning here is known as
the Dunbar number the Dunbar number is
the total number of relationships that
an individual is capable of maintaining
essentially it’s the maximum number of
friends you can have humans have a
Dunbar number of 150 and this is
significantly higher than any other
animal
however IOT devices will not be subject
to our limitations they’ll have it
almost or at least relatively unlimited
capacity for social relationships our
human Dunbar number will be shattered by
the Internet of Things which brings us
to our next topic
IOT enables our environment to know us
in this IOT world you’ll be known
wherever you go this pervasive physical
awareness of us and who we are it opens
up many new possibilities just imagine
entering a hotel room you’ve never been
in before and automatically room confers
itself to suit you the temperature is
just how you like it and your favorite
music is on or imagine walking into a
shopping mall and all the window
displays recognize you and they begin
marketing specifically to your interests
or imagine jaywalking across a crowded
City Street if the environment knows you
are you may just receive a ticket in the
mail
now these aspects of the IOT future they
may be making some of you uneasy and in
fact I selected those examples to
indicate that there’s a possible loss of
anonymity in this IOT feature we already
know that if we browse the web we’re
tracked but we’re not used to being
tracked in physical space today people
use something called a digital VPN to
mask their identity when they’re online
tomorrow it’s realistic to believe that
there’ll be something similar to a
physical VPN that people can use to mask
their identity when they go outside so
that every trashcan in street light
doesn’t know who they are all the time
now piggybacking off this point IOT will
change or at least challenge our
concepts of ownership one thing that I
RT devices will be really really good at
is generating enormous amounts of data
in fact by 2020 IOT devices will
generate 2 Zeta bytes of data this is
not a normal household unit so first of
context a Bible is 4 megabytes of
information so 2 Zeta bytes would fill
300 million Olympic swimming pools full
of Bibles it’s a lot of data and the
question is who owns it if you purchase
an IOT device do you own all the data it
collects let me reverse that if someone
else has a device that collects
information about you do you have
certain rights to it and critically how
much of this data will the government or
law enforcement or the producer of the
device itself have access to so taking
this in a different direction
not only are there questions of
ownership of the data produced by IOT
devices but also of the IOT devices of
themselves likely a few of us have ever
gone to the store purchased a toaster
and then wondered if it was ethical to
own that toaster well at least until
2014 when an hour to toaster was
launched this toaster which goes by the
name Brad is designed to want to make
toast and if Brad feels neglected he can
wiggle his little toaster handle trying
to
your attention if he’s further ignored
eventually what Brad will begin to feel
that his current home is not a good one
for him he’s connected to the Internet
so he can post the foresail ad for
himself trying to find a new home where
someone actually wants some toast
now you may you may not want this needy
coaster in your kitchen but he certainly
does make us think about household
appliances in a different way
which brings us to our final topic that
IOT must have Trust as its foundation
we’re only at the beginning of this
world of IOT it’s a world that expands
our senses it connects our surroundings
and it can transform our lives in
amazing ways but equally it has the
potential to put us under constant
surveillance the potential to exploit us
how do we set the tone the foundation
the framework now such as the Internet
of Things leads to a world that we would
want to be a part of I believe that
trust is fundamental not blind trust but
proactive trust the most important topic
that should be in IOT discourses of
today is how do we build trust into the
very fabric of this whole thing so my
challenge to those who make IOT products
as well as those who use them those of
us who use them is to look for and in
fact demand the following traits to be
in any product that’s connected to the
Internet
transparency in its operations
authenticity in its behavior reliability
in its performance and trustworthiness
in its nature because remember we are
social beings after all but IOT is
nothing but a network of social devices
I believe that IOT can only reach its
potential if we get to a point where we
feel trust not trust in some big
abstract Network but trust in the
individual devices around us the devices
that we interact with that we
communicate with that we have a
relationship with this is the Internet
of Things future that I see thank you
