How Debate Education can reshape communities | Nathania Engelhardt | TEDxCuracao

children are the future that is the one
quote that I cannot stand to listen to
anymore not because it’s not true
but because we constantly fail to make
it true one of the many ways sadly that
we fail or you’d is by not including
them in decision-making that affects
their own lives your participation
isn’t right included and the convention
of the right of the child but also it is
the most effective way to reach to
effective solutions I mean wouldn’t you
agree that talking to people with a
problem is the best way to solve that
problem but more importantly by giving
the youth of voice by listening to them
we also give them a set of skills that
is crucial in their own development
unfortunately we don’t give our kids
these opportunities I was lucky enough
to join my student debate organization
and University and for the five for the
past five years I grew immensely as a
person I learned to control my fears but
also I was a girl that loved to talk I
still do but true debating and learn how
to put content to those talks I now know
what I’m talking about most of the times
but I also met a lot of great people I
created friendships I traveled a lot and
most importantly I saw the social impact
of debating how I can transform a person
I went from thinking okay I could have
been a so better debater if I started in
high school – oh my god our high school
kids can smash so many boxes if they
learn how to debate and that’s what
brought me to idea ideas the
international debate Education
Association I first join as a trainer I
helped in a project called joint roots
joint dignity where in Netherlands used
with African heritage
learn how to talk about topics such as
racism and discrimination after that I
did my master internship at idea I
studied how we can use the beta
education here in Curacao to help our
youth and that’s where I am now I’m
starting to work on a foundation at the
bait Foundation obviously to help or you
would hear on the island to transform
themselves and their community but now
you may ask what is debate education
well the idea method it’s simple you
take a safe space where you nurture the
voice of the youth and you help them
transform their raw emotions and to rat
you know motions and from there how they
can create actions to make change so I
like to use the example of youth in the
Netherlands in rough neighborhoods
neighborhoods and police these are kids
that are often negatively portrayed in
the media they are overly policed
there’s constant fighting and they
basically don’t know how to voice their
opinions through different programs
where they get music they get are they
get pizza and also get debate exercises
they learn how to use their voice
instead of their fists they learn to see
that the police is also human being and
also the police also learned to see this
youth as what they are it’s children and
together they can get to proactive
solutions for their own neighborhood and
this is something that can be done in
any setting we can even use it in what
we heard about the hairstyling projects
we can use it everywhere music sports
arts wherever so let’s take a crazy
example football who here loves to play
football see some hands also so Joe
Cooney also likes to play football but
Tony doesn’t care too much about
debating Junior doesn’t like anything
about politics it’s all blah blah for
him Jun he just wants to play ball
unfortunately there is no football field
in his neighborhood so whenever he and
his friends go out and play in front of
an empty house there is constantly
clashes with the neighbors and they call
the police
that becomes another issue and so the
cycle continues you take these kids you
give them a role model someone they can
look up to someone that listens to them
gives them a safe space let’s call her
Jenny
so Jenny helps them to talk what is the
problem actually what bothers you but
also what’s your passion what do you
really want to do and together they go
to different exercises and again the
pizza and the games and the music
everything to make it fun for them and
through these exercises to learn how to
come up for themselves eventually Jenny
gives them an opportunity to talk with
the neighbors to talk with politicians
to talk about anybody that can make a
difference and together these youngsters
and the lawmakers can come up with
solutions that are effective maybe they
don’t get a football field immediately
but it do get empathy the neighbors
start seeing them as kids the police
start seeing them at skits and they
start seeing them as human beings this
is the type of self information that are
you so desperately need to drink dreams
bigger than themselves this is what
transforms them into active citizens
people that works words change people
that know how to talk about certain
topics people that don’t only complain
and sit and complain and sit and
complain if this is not how you smash a
box and I don’t know what kind of
doctors were talking about but let’s be
realistic for a while raise your hand if
you like to debate it’s actually more
than I expected but that’s okay I mean
it would be unrealistic for me to expect
everybody to love debates although I am
willing to convince everybody that it’s
the best hobby there is but the point is
not a debate it’s the skills that you
achieve through debating that’s why I
don’t want all of these kids to become
debaters or politicians or lawmakers
this should be leaders there should be
people that know how to talk how to
voice an opinion without only writing me
opinion on Facebook and that’s it they
should be able to let
to think critically to convince others
and that’s the type of you that I want
to create that’s the type of you that we
need here on the island to get to
changes that are effective and you can
use that with any different methods as
long as it’s important and as long as
it’s relevant to them so we can even use
the meditation that we heard from other
speakers point being I really want you
all to join me in giving this youth the
gift of debate education not for
debating sakes but for the skills for
what they can become let’s not wait for
them to be the future let’s make them
our present thank you [Applause]
