not pronounced keep a or pypy okay it’s
tight we derived it from a Scottish word
which means to manifest oneself and we
manifest our doubt for the children and
the families through simple sharing and
togetherness it rhymes with right and
that’s what we do we have lived the
lives of experience and the spirits of
the children and their families eh so er
Castro and myself we co-founded kind
ekari multiple again okay so the Clovis
public type and you were doing our of
course work in psychology at the Ateneo
de Manila University and he had to
interact with a special population and
we ended up interacting with children
with cancer and when we were about to
graduate
we said that we couldn’t leave the
children behind we thought and we saw
that it takes more than medicine to get
well so what we did was we put up a
sign-up sheet about any of the vanilla
the bellowing hall band at the psych
department and we recruited volunteers
and about 20 to 30 undergrad and grad
students signed up and from there we had
to train them and then we grew and we
grew and now we’re more than about 500
volunteers nationwide and we’re not just
in one hospital now we’re in eight
hospitals
okay but on a more personal note I
wanted to be more always one of the
I’d be being close to Paul because he’s
a top young boy so yes what we called
retinoblastoma cancer of the high you
know what you would want as a tumor
clinic could walk like Robin for me yeah
even with that tumor clinic I women
without retinal blastoma and then when
you actually hold one ball and socket
long and it will take time Sam Puckett
the school VNA ideally close to me like
really play with him and all that you
know actually the first ever fundraising
app I was doing my birthday you just
February to instead of asking gifts from
my friends I act in you look gift and
you please the name or the chemotherapy
of bone so we had look online Amy we
have to gala in our parish and then I
was able to raise about sixty to eighty
thousand and we were able to shrink it’s
more but unfortunately let it go home to
move somewhere to be with his family
because his mom had to go back home but
then a month later he came back to the
tumor clinic but unfortunately I didn’t
see the puffy all anymore when you would
go to chemotherapy when he would give
his hand you already start crying so
about two weeks after that I have all my
snakes and ladders board games and all
my
patter for daily effort me and when I
like to determine penny I asked first
all you notice our regular Wednesday
date and then the doctor said all died
so I said okay I went home crying I went
home from heaven see the arrow the boss
of the ways of Makati where I did and I
was asked riding in the Lhasa and I said
I don’t want to go back to the tumor
clinic anymore
why will I subject myself to hurt I’m
not a masochist you know what a
masterpiece so I said I’m not a
masochist I don’t want to get hurt and
hurt again these are even my relative
why would I spend while you’re impressed
I need someone who will just die anyway
but you know as I was going down of
about there down from the bus there’s an
inner voice that told me early if you
don’t go back home take care of the
other children over here of Beckwith of
Junction you would have this way of
so I found myself going back next
Wednesday then next Wednesday so the
week’s turned into months the months
turned into years and I’ve been doing
this for 25 years
oh okay so what can we do in hi we have
a bit of a Child Life program and these
are our services we have an acronym for
it it’s that box let me draw your
attention on educate everywhere children
you know what we do is when a child has
to go for x-ray we explain to them what
x-ray is let me ask you what is actually
what is x-ray like if you were to given
camera okay so when we tell when the
child has to go for x-ray what do you
tell the child what when he goes for a
picture what should he or she do you do
that mean it no x-ray you have to stay
still
x-ray right yeah okay because otherwise
the picture will become dirty yes how
explain Mexico to teachers to children
okay and you can use that for your
nieces and for your nephews okay so we
have red balls okay okay and these are
our partner hospitals so if you want to
volunteer without you can go to any of
these hospitals you can go as far
somehow if you want okay next slide
please and we have embarked on
evidence-based practice okay so this is
to validate that what we are doing is
correct and it’s had an impact
so it’s called addressing the
psychosocial needs the most good child
the role of the Child Life program hey
oh oh no doesn’t work with me okay so we
do see the age child drop child drawing
in hospital so what we did this before
we implemented the program at the
Philippine Children’s Medical Center we
asked the children to draw okay and what
is super section of the hospital and
then six months into the program we
asked them to draw again so it’s what
you call a pretest and a post-test it so
it’s next one piece okay next slide so
this is an example of a pretest since 16
years old has new rubber gloves syndrome
she has boiled all over her body
in so she needs blood transfusion almost
every other day so that is her reality
chance in that reporting she has much
institution every other day six months
into the program of providing
type of social support which had five
services to see this is her drawing
there so you will see her world exchange
I don’t think you need a psychology
degree to understand that her perception
with the hospital has changed next time
this is Joshua has acute lymphocytic
leukemia al del Sol six months into the
program this it is drawing the lady on
the right is our part-time wife or the
intern who stays with a child every
weekday okay so we Randall the results
through statistics but they fix and this
is what we found out that we were able
to decrease anxiety of the child at the
hospital and more importantly next slide
we saw the value of the Child Life
coordinator and the volunteers like you
guys maybe in the future you make an
impact in the lives of this children by
just playing with them just being with
them for two hours a week next time more
importantly – we found out that we
increase the chances of survival because
we make the hospital of the happy place
to be the children keep coming back keep
coming back and they are compliant with
their medical procedures and because
they’re compliant then they survive they
get well and that’s why we have
survivors we already have survivors so
these are the survivors and that is very
bad line they weren’t want to make that
a battle survive and life free time and
it is now our survivors who are helping
other volunteers are assisting the other
one
they’re in the posture that they’re
being for work that way hey so what are
the lessons that I learned a each
encounter with a child is an opportunity
to learn more about myself
hey 1 sorry you said that you know I
heard Beth Beth died when I was in a
conference like this out outside a
hospital it was very close Batman just
like I was close wrong so what I did was
after my dog I had to rush to the
hospital but I couldn’t see where he
wasn’t into the warrior who know what
we’re no better you know what I found
him I found him at the morgue what it
did was without thinking I went to the
morgue went inside took of the tree and
I kissed him because I could not let him
go without saying goodbye I said I don’t
do that normally why didn’t I do I guess
you need somebody you go out of your
comfort zone
Thanks and it’s okay to show your feet
you know in our medical world they say
that as doctors as medical professionals
you don’t have to cry you can’t show
that you’re crying with a patient but we
do because we say that we understand you
and that we are one with you so we show
empathy it’s not a sign of weakness but
it is a sign of empathy another instance
is when the lady to my left Jesus cut
the nail volunteer and just placed to
become the president of but she met a
tragic death
her whole family and tragic them it was
supposed to be kind of leap when she
died we were supposed to be flying kites
that week so what happened was the whole
kind of the near community was
devastated and we have to do counseling
and debris field so we were all there
out in the room but I could not do it I
have to ask help from other
professionals I have a spell for my
colleagues because I could not process
the students so this lets me and you
know it is okay to admit that you are
weak it is okay to admit your faults
don’t be don’t appear to be always
strong and for help especially you’re
really depressed ask for help call
person call a friend and ask for help so
many suicides would have been avoided if
again be humble humble enough to admit
that you have limitations that you can’t
always be strong for others I am awarded
here but what makes me go on and on for
25 years is because I have a personal
mission my personal mission is very
clear to me and this is what I do I see
you’re very quiet let me help you if you
were to die tomorrow what would you like
to be written on their epitaph on your
tombstone they get some volunteers if
you complete the sentence here lies
state your name he or she rather because
there are no boys here she boy I get one
or two older peers state your name and
okay from this side one more no more
Joey Joey God okay this is a simple
exercise for you to determine your
personal mission
why because I think it’s really gamble
alone she wants choose remember really
remember that the person who wants to
keep people happy so that means from
this time on everything that she will do
everything that she will say should be
towards making other people happy
we understand yes
so with me this is my personal mission
here lies Fatima all so long as early
she cared for children in hospitals
always and always thank you [Applause]
