Have an Idea? Learn to Pitch It | Anup Dutta | TEDxYouth@ISD

[Music]
last Friday when I was in the shower I
was trying to untangle the north’s from
a man boom and suddenly an idea popped
up into my head even last night when I
was trying to sleep I was just looking
at the ceiling I was tossing and turning
and out of the blue I got an idea
governor malloy say I’m in a board
meeting and suddenly our materials oh
gee after journal necktie design girl
maybe because I love tall creatures and
sometimes I kept in him that I also
wondering cuckoo Judah pan Porto fell
cheeky Roberto do very important engage
our covert oh so another idea Gullu on
action coincident could be unexpected
uncle could be unrelated situations with
Tasha
so did you ever face something like that
so what if institution which is seven
which is unexpected you get an idea that
can solve a problem that can make the
world a better place and that can make
the life easier for the people what do
you do them where do you start
you start with sharing ideas
you start with pitching your ideas with
the people that can help you out so what
is pitch a pitch is the way we share our
ideas if you consider games like cricket
or baseball pitching means just throwing
it and ball that is ke you aim carefully
and you just throw a ball and pitching
and idea means is just throwing an idea
in front of an audience
it’s like presenting an idea in front of
the audience and of course for their
consideration so what makes
a good pitch a good pitcher is simple
have good pitches memorable a good pitch
is convincing so we’ll discuss some of
the essentials that can help us to make
a good pitch start the problem where is
that problem that you are trying to
solve it’s an opportunity of
storytelling rather than just a
statement and stories are powerful
storytelling is powerful stories are
memorable stories become a large part of
how we remember things and we can
remember almost everything so the best
problem that we can solve is something
that we have faced in your life or
something that we have faced we’ve seen
people to suffer to that make this story
and focus on the pain point that shows
that the problem we are solving is a big
one and the next part is the solution
every idea is a solution to a problem so
in this section you state your idea at a
single sentences for there or ideally in
8 to 10 words and focus on the benefits
of your idea rather than the features so
there is one significant difference
between features and benefits if you
close your observe all of us use mobile
phone here for the mobile phone it comes
with a benefit of power capcity say for
example for my mobile there’s 4000 mAh
in the battery capacity so that’s the
future and the benefit of that is once
fully charged I can actually use my
mobile for for two days without charging
so it shows that benefits are convincing
and there is more convincing that than
the feature what makes you different
there shall be one point that makes you
different makes your idea different is
possible that the problem you are trying
to solve may have multiple solution may
have not
existing solutions but what unique
benefit that you are providing that
makes you stand out from the rest of the
ideas that makes you stand out from the
rest of the solution in the there and
this is what the audience remember about
your idea next the one more thing part
it’s an opportunity where you state one
interesting fact one interesting number
about your idea it is something that
audience least expect that in that
moment so this is the best time because
it adds one hint of surprise in the
pitch and we all love surprises and
finally the best part and the most
important part is the call to action
call to action is you have to figure out
what so what do you need to execute your
idea and what the audience can help you
out with and be specific and let the
audience know and this is the best way
we can actually utilize the momentum
that we have gained from the pitch so
this is the basic structure of a pitch
how we share ideas now we discuss some
of the best practices that can actually
help us to make our pitch more efficient
now the first one is the Golden Rule
less is more less is powerful so when we
pitch a usually an ideal pitch is short
and ideal which is concise and it’s like
a dance performance it’s like a show so
whoever is investing their time we have
to make sure that they are having a good
time
number two slice slides are helpful it’s
beneficial for both the audience and
both for the presenter it helps the
audience to better understand the
presentation and it helps the presenter
to better and present his presentation
and the last one is practice so the next
time whenever you get an idea whether it
let it be in the shower
let it be in the in the bed when you’re
trying to sleep Whizzer be it in the
middle of a geometry class if that
problem is solving a problem you have to
figure out what are the solutions that
is existing there why are you different
what the benefits of your idea and worse
or do you need to execute that and pitch
and trust me this is this is not a
rocket science all you need is love
I mean practice all you need is practice
thank you
