most of you probably remember this sound
it was only 20 years ago that you had to
use and complicated an expensive
internet dial-up modem to connect to the
internet back then only a small minority
of households had actually access to the
Internet and the technology was the
first time to promise instant access to
all the information that is available
worldwide even though the technology had
some severe limitations the people that
actually used it had already seen that
this technology was a complete
game-changer and not a fad like some
people predicted the internet as well as
the open-source movement share some
ideals especially the community driven
approach to development improving and
sharing is very important and today a
word without open source software would
be unthinkable but it was really the
development of the Internet that helped
to kick-start this movement twenty years
ago a company called Netscape released
the source code of its internet browser
the Navigator completely for free on the
internet
this move kick-started the whole free
software movement and coined the term
open source’
without this event many of the
developments of the internet would have
never been possible and it doesn’t stop
there
even the blockchain technology is mainly
made up by open source components they
were put together it starts from the
networking code to the encryption
algorithm all the way to the hashing
algorithm and I think that the
blockchain technology would have likely
never been invented
without the open-source movement today
access to the Internet is so important
that the United Nations are actually
thinking about adding the right to
Internet access to the Human Rights
charter the way we
consume and search for information has
drastically changed in the past years
everyone on word that has internet
access now has the same access to
information as everybody else projects
like Wikipedia where 34 million people
can commit their information to the
database would have been unthinkable
without the internet and the way we
communicate has also drastically changed
at first with email then with instant
messaging and now with social media the
communities can now organize themselves
and achieve amazing things events like
the Arabic Revolution would have been
impossible without social media and also
other platforms for example change.org
provide an amazing platform for people
all over the globe to submit a petition
to mobilize their supporters for the
cause over 200 million people have
already participated in this platform
and it was 10 years ago that the world
was already more interconnected than it
has ever been but which would be a good
thing but in the financial industry this
interconnectedness nearly led to a
complete financial meltdown and it was
exactly in this environment that a guy
called Satoshi Nakamoto invented the
blockchain technology and its first
application Bitcoin what this technology
sought to do was to revolutionize the
way the trust was involved in our
everyday lives today we have to trust
companies to keep our data safe we have
to trust banks to keep our money safe we
have to trust the government to keep our
records safe and this technology for the
first time wanted to remove the way the
trust is implemented and by doing so
they also in many cases removed the
middlemen bitcoin was the first
implementation of this technology and it
has since revolutionized the way we
think about how money currency and store
of value will be implemented in the
future and this is really only the first
step of this technology and many areas
will follow suit
there is a flood of Yankee developers
that are actually starting projects in
this space and they all share one common
vision they want to improve the world
with this technology and the speed at
which they are doing this is amazing for
example one month in the blockchain
world is comparable to the developments
of 12 months in two traditional
industries and because of these there’s
thousands of projects already are being
developed in this industry and it’s very
hard to keep track of all of them so
well I will just give you an overview of
a few of them the project called SIA
wants to revolutionize the way data is
stored instead of moving data into the
cloud they want to provide a
decentralized network where data can be
stored you can think about this like the
uber for data storage and the amazing
thing is that they managed to do this at
the cost that is lower than for example
Dropbox another project that I’m very
passionate about this is the
decentralized land registries currently
there is a major problem with those
registries because in countries that
have a very high corruption rate those
entries are often manipulated and the
blockchain based service in this area
can provide a completely transparent
entry of data that can be audited by
everyone in the world there’s already a
few countries thinking about doing that
and many in Central Africa but also
Sweden and Estonia are working on this
mainly for efficiency reasons and
Estonia especially is very known for
being innovative in their governance
they they already implemented a digital
ID and online voting for their citizens
and they are now moving forward as one
of the first countries in the world to
issue their own cryptocurrency it’s
called the East corn and there’s many
countries that actually also want to go
into this direction issue their own
currencies like Sweden which is very
innovative and also Hong Kong and
Ecuador for example
one aspect of blockchain is called
digital assets where you can actually
have decentralized tokens on the
blockchain and in the last years this
became very popular I’m sure most of you
have heard the term icos initial coin
offerings and this technology is being
used for the centrally crowdfunding
money for blockchain products but I
think the more important use case for
this technology is actually something
like a digital IPO where companies all
around the world can issue their shares
and bonds on the blockchain at a very
low cost currently those companies can’t
access the capital markets because the
barrier of entry is in the hundreds
thousands of euros we are currently
seeing the developments in many
different areas
but it is really only the start of this
development I think the most important
part for this technology to reach
mainstream adoption would be when the
applications will be so user-friendly
that everybody can use it
at usability that it as good as the
centralized services there is a hedge
fund manager that funded the 300 million
euro headphones and he said the
following words when the centralized
blockchain protocols start displacing
the centralized web services to dominate
the current internet we’ll start to see
real internet-based sovereignity the
future internet will be decentralized
and with this a very much agree and I
think that all the services that
currently are dominating the internet
will be challenged by decentralization
and in 10 years the blockchain
technology will be so ingrained into our
everyday lives that we will not even
think about blockchain when we will be
using it much like applications today
that use the Internet
we don’t even think or make this
connection that they are connected in
the future if you want to send money to
your friends for example using a smart
phone the payment will most likely be
settled using a blockchain without you
or your
and even noticing it if you are surfing
the internet your browser will
automatically handle all the payments
that are done to the content creators
and also to block ads completely
automatically and trust free settled
using a blockchain based system if
you’re waiting for the next election you
don’t need to go to a voting booth
because you can just use your smartphone
that is actually an in blockchain based
voting mechanism that Anonymous’s your
vote and stores it on the blockchain
completely transparently and can be
audited from everyone in the world so
the women no more cries for manipulation
if you voting in in those elections the
the governments of your country can
actually reward you with the currencies
that they have issued I expect a flat of
countries to issue their own
cryptocurrencies and there will be a
need to distribute those coins to the
public personally I think that in the
next 10 years there will be not a single
area of the internet that will not be
affected or challenged by
decentralization let’s recap the
internet was intended to be open and
egalitarian with with the rise of
centralized companies everything became
very Central and monopolized now with
the rising popularity of the blockchain
technology for the first time ever we
have the chance to build alternatives
for those services that give back
control to the users of their data of
their content and actually built the
decentralized internet s was intended
thank you
