Freedom of Speech | Roberto Segovia | TEDxYouth@Austin

oh I suppose people here love football
right we’re in Texas so in a football
team who’s usually the team captain
isn’t it the quarterback and what do
great quarterbacks have in common for me
it’s always been the confidence they
have in themselves and the confidence
their teammates have in them right so
let’s say you’re the quarterback of your
team and you it’s the fourth quarter and
you have to score to win the game
your coach calls the play you’ve ran it
many times you know it you walk into the
huddle and you try to say the play and
the words just won’t come out oh you
just cannot say the play it isn’t it
hard enough to score the touchdown it’s
n it hard enough to impress the girl you
like on the sideline or not get tackled
by a linebacker so what will be the the
feeling or the shame of this quarterback
who cannot call the play but he’s been
able to call it in practice or prior to
this this situation is a daily struggle
for people who stutter people who start
know what they want to say most of the
time but sometimes they just cannot say
they just cannot speak this quarterback
was myself many years ago and I just
cannot tell say the play I knew we could
have scored I knew we could have won the
game but I just cannot call the play so
because of this and many other reasons I
started to hide my stutter I and this is
known as being a covert stutter so I
found unique ways of switching words
back and forth i expanded my
vocab not to sound more cultured or just
to know more words which is to be able
to have more words in order to change
them as you can see up in the slide so I
always had to be one step ahead of what
I was saying I was talking but my
thought process was in the following two
or three words to be able to react to a
stumble and just switch it out my my
first language is Spanish so that’s why
you can hear an accent so I would switch
Spanish to English vice versa and I even
threw in some German sometimes which I’m
horrible at all this to avoid at the
label that’s really important just all
this to avoid the label so I skipped
presentations in school
I skipped first days of schools I I
rather my GPA suffer than my social life
one time I I met this girl we started to
talk
great great girl and she gives me her
number and her name her name started
with an M and I struggled with words
that started with that letter I never
called so I’ve spent years just trying
to figure out how to improve my my
fluency people told you to read out loud
people tell you to do voice exercises or
just to sing which I’m not good at
either
there’s many gimmicks on the internet
that tell you haters treatment and
you’re going to be stutter free after a
week of month or a weekend but all these
fixes were basically quick fixes and
fixes from the outside in so for me it
was like stopping a leak with duct tape
it does the job for the first couple
hours but then the tapes going to give
out and you have the leak all over
so the fix I realized was from the
inside I was my heart is critic I would
pressure myself to be perfectly fluent a
thing I couldn’t be I was talking with
people and I would stumble over words
and nobody would notice but I would and
I’d be hard on myself so why am I here
if I hate to speak in public I’ll add
Byronic ah well because recently I met
Courtney Byrd from UT from the lang
starting Institute and she taught me
that the more I try to hide it and the
more I wanna the the more I want to be
perfectly fluent the less I will be so
she taught me to speak freely instead of
fluently and there’s a big difference
speaking fluently means doing the things
I did for all my life speaking freely
means speak your mind if you stumble who
cares just speak so since I learned this
I’ve been trying to prove to myself that
I can do speaking in public I I can just
speak freely and be carefree about it
so I’ve sought out challenges a month
ago I spoke in front of 200 people more
or less with a microphone for the first
time I usually whenever I gave
presentations I usually never well I
never used the microphone just I I was
terrified of it and today’s the second
time so still improving
so the common belief of people who
stutter is that they started because
they’re nervous distracted or just plain
clumsy this is because people who don’t
stutter when they do stutter it’s
because they’re just nervous or
distracted or whatever but the real
reason is we get nervous because we
start not the other way around
starting is not a psychological disorder
it’s a narrow physical disorder and at
least 1% of the people have it males are
3 times more likely than females to
stutter I want I want to create a
positive culture about it most people
think we’re introverts but we can also
be extroverts we can be shy
we can be loud like myself and we know
what we want to say the tricky part is
just saying it so I understand that most
people here don’t start it right it’s
one out of a hundred but we can all we
can all relate to having something we
don’t like about ourselves that we can’t
actually control something we were born
with and instead of worrying about this
why not embrace the different things you
you have and focus on what you really
want in life and go pursue that use this
as as a spark and not as an excuse not
to chase your goals if you think about
it the people who inspire you the people
you admire usually had to face a
challenge to get to where they are life
is not going to be easy so you have to
get over the hurdles and the challenges
there’s been many people who started
with being greatly successful and done
many things when I said Sharon
the artist you might all know but
there’s also a former Vice President Joe
Biden I’m not sure if you knew this and
[Applause]
even Kings have started with King George
the six so the motto of the length
starting Institute is dreams speak live
so when you learn to upset yourself you
will be able to focus on what you really
want in life and I hope my words today
inspire you to be the best version of
yourself thank you very much
[Applause]
