finding a path as a young graduates in
Nigeria is becoming increasingly
difficult because we’re faced with the
very high rates of unemployment it is
becoming increasing difficult for
students to find their feets when you
leave the university according to a
study by Java man he says 47% of
Nigerian graduates are unemployed we
also have 500,000 people that leave the
universities every year back into the
job market we also find some of
ourselves after our parents have
struggled to send us to school we come
out of school and still become a burden
on them not because of our own making
most times but because of the
environments that we find ourselves so
what are the little things that we can
do from an undergraduate stage that will
help us at least survive in school and
we can from there on develop ourselves
to be better people when we leave that
environment
it is true that we were sent to school
to have good races than at it we are
also sent there to be better people but
right now we need to encourage our
students to be able to find
opportunities within their environments
they can do this in various ways one for
example you could land well while you’re
in school how to buy and sell if for
example you fall into the category of
intelligent students you could become a
tutor of subjects that I had to grasp so
that other students that don’t Carolyn
can come and learn from you and that way
you build experience and also end from
doing that there are a lot of young
Nigerians that are using this model to
improve themselves and grow from there a
good example is
in Benson he’s a young Nigerian that
builds a company called – Terrier I
don’t know if any of you have heard of
it before you have okay so he has a
website called – Tara calm
what tutor.com does is that it links
tutors to potential students so if you
have anything you want to learn so you
want to let Mandarin for example French
for example you go on this platform and
you find tutors that will teach you
these subjects he has over 10,000 tutors
on this platform right now
and it’s just two years old and he has
2,500 students that come to this
platform to gain to get two toes I met
him a couple of years ago and he told me
that he started being a tutor right from
when he was in school and when he left
school he got a job works for a while
and left to build this company that’s
really creating jobs and also a man and
helping a lot of Nigerians to reset they
also ran into a post on the internet or
some students that built a website where
other students can come and share
project topics and also interacts with
students from other universities the
university is a great place to test and
try different things which will now
compound and help you grow in the long
run now what can we as individuals here
do to help our young one say if you’re a
parent or you’re an uncle or your aunt’s
right here today we need to start
encouraging students to be problem
solvers when they go to school we need
to tell them to get a skill we need to
also support them when we can
financially so that they use that as a
testing ground for themselves so when
they leave it becomes a bit easy for
them the benefit of doing this is that
when you finally leave school say there
are no jobs with the with the reference
I just made you will never allow
yourself to just lay down there and not
do anything you would try find a way to
do something to affect your your commute
life after school can be one of the most
confusing times but if we practice these
things from a very young age I bet you
will do just fine
I’ll use myself an example as an example
when I left the university most of us I
see a lot of young people here today
most of us when we leave the university
we have this very big dream of how we’re
going to do this or how we’re going to
do that and we become unrealistic with
those dreams most times for example
myself I had this dream every time I am
in a taxi then and I see how people pee
everywhere in porta codes I wanted to
set up a mobile toilet everywhere in the
city so I went on and I wrote proposals
and I was looking for people that would
help me to bring this to life but it was
difficult so what did i do I had to
advise myself and say oh what is the
main thing I need right now in my life I
need a survival I needed to survive and
what the survival means for me back then
it meant I should be able to feed myself
I should be able to clothe myself and
transport myself and stay reachable so I
had to learn how to be a middle man or B
I had to learn how to get commissions
from other existing businesses so what I
did was I find businesses that are
existing and I help them find clients
for their businesses and I stay in the
middle and take a commission from from
that I did that in that part of my life
to survive and I can tell you there are
so many places this principle can be
applied in we can apply it a lot of
people do it in printing a lot of people
do it on social media markets in a lot
of things if we do that it will be easy
for us finding your path will lead you
to try a lot of things in that process
you might come across the one idea which
you might now know chop and grow a
passion around it and at this case my
foots the bill it is a very difficult
journey and I stand here and do this
talk in less than six minutes
and see how easy or just talk about it
generally it is a very very hard journey
but I tell you today that if you try
this from a very young age you it’s a
set a proprietary stage for you
generally you can grow from there to
being a great employer sorry a great
employee rather because most people that
do this
I found out myself they become good
employees when he gets a job or you can
go on to build a big company that will
help to employ all the Nigerians and
also help us get our get out of poverty
thank you
