good morning if I’m honest one of the
things that really annoys me is when
people give me advice yet don’t
necessarily know what they’re talking
about look I know they’re probably more
annoying things in life like you know
getting a parking ticket or forgetting
your phone but hear me out so a while
back I was talking to my dad and I said
hey I’m doing a TED talk to which he
replies by giving me his advice on how
to do it I mean I was a bit taken aback
to be honest a bit like excuse me I
hadn’t realized this guy done a TED talk
anytime soon and he hadn’t yeah he’s
still offer me his let’s be honest
pointless advice on how to do it how she
keep got me thinking though it’s a lot
more prevalent in society than I first
thought
not just my dad does it or the register
at law I mean with all this advice that
are fingertips in the forum the Internet
we need to ask ourselves is it all
useful now usually you would hope that
the person giving you advice has some
experience in their field but it’s
important to know that this experience
isn’t necessarily after come in the form
of a qualification for example last time
I took there wasn’t a master’s degree in
dare wrestling but if you met someone
who had wrestled a bear and survived
number one giving their number they
sound really cool they can give a
bodyguard but also number two it could
probably give a decent advice on how to
wrestle a bear like use your common
sense and don’t but whenever floats your
boat even if it’s gonna eaten alive by
bear and truth is though it’s hard to
listen to useful advice because
everyone’s so quick to offer theirs for
example if I went to my friend’s asking
for relationship advice because let’s be
honest I’m in dire need of some yeah
it’s funny because it’s true some my
friends would tell me to be all romantic
serenade her buy her flowers bring a
gondolier into school and row her down
the corridor tried that didn’t work and
conversely some of my friends would tell
me to not talk to her
be cool be mysterious which is pretty
much me in a nutshell I know but how
many of these people had relationships
in the past no and that’s the irony of
all these people have opinions not
expertise and their opinions are only
valid if they have the relevant
experience to back it up with I mean if
you had a relationship in the past then
fair enough
tell
what works who obviously didn’t work for
you but it’s clear to see that
experience creates expertise truth is
though we’re all experts into something
I know I sound like a motivational
speaker when I say that but it’s true
whether it’s in performing arts
academics or sports we can all offer
something by contributing our knowledge
I mean for me although I haven’t
wrestled any bears I mean at least not
this week
I can still offer advice on a few things
whether you listen to that advice or not
that’s completely up to you you might
save yourself a few headaches but by
sharing our differing perspectives and
experiences we can generate legitimately
useful advice so when my dad was
offering me his advice maybe he hummed
in a TED talk but he had done
presentations in class he had written
speeches for his bosses and he had
learned house communicate his ideas
effectively and now thanks to my
relevant experience I can give you
advice on how to deliver a TED talk just
don’t ask me to tell you how to wrestle
a bear any time soon thanks very much [Applause]
