Expand Self in the Journey of Cultural Exploration | Man Wai, Liman Li | TEDxEdUHK

thank you for helping me to be here and
my title is expense self in the journey
of cultural exploration before I start
my talk let me like begin with like
sharing an aunt moment that I had in the
United States I remember a long long
time ago I attended a summer Institute
in Michigan United States and I whisset
at Japanese restaurant and as you might
know usually the waiters or waitress in
United States they would start to serve
you a cup of like water with ice first
as you may know as a Chinese traditional
Chinese we would know we need to avoid
having too much cold rain so instead of
asking you know to have a cup of water
with ice I asked the waiter but would it
be okay that if I can have a cup of like
water ok warm water guess what the
waited life said he stopped and she did
not know how to respond and then after
like self-respect and he said oh sorry I
cannot give you a cup of warm water it’s
that I can give you a cup of hot tea at
that moment I feel a little odd why how
come a Japanese first phone will be able
to provide me you know hot tea but they
cannot give me hot water I assume that
you know like they need to use the hot
water to prepare the hot tea isn’t it ok
it seems so odd why that would happen
indeed ok the waiters response they use
the expectation collectively shared
among Americans but my request indeed is
following the expectations collectively
shared among Chinese people so that’s
why we both experienced the odd moment
today I would like to share the power of
culture on shaping you know how we
behave how we believe and how we you
know talk to other people as you may
know you know well once we come to the
world and socialization takes place we
learn how to add appropriately at the
end we learn how to be a good social
member but interestingly although was
what I say
power like culture is really powerful
but most of time we are not aware of it
until we get a chance to explore other
culture so here’s a one very popular
metaphor shared by cultural
psychologists we say that human just
like the fish living in the tank we will
never know the importance of water for
survival until the fish lifts the water
just like us maybe you never know how
important our heritage culture shapes us
until we get a chance to explore other
like cultures today I would like to
share how my journey of cultural
exploration helps me to reflect the
influence of heritage culture on me and
teach me how to appreciate the variety
of cultural environment more importantly
it also allows me to expand myself not
only about my ability but also might
well willed to make my talk you know a
little bit more organized I would like
to introduce the models caused by a
professor Kuroda red from the Stanford
University and she proposed that as a
human beings if we want to have a good
psychological well-being we need to
achieve some basic needs what she calls
kept c.a.p
these needs include competence
acceptance and predictability and today
I will share some stories that happen in
Canada where I completed my PhD 3 degree
and South Korea where I went to there to
join exchange program in Japan where I
wizard two years ago to share like how
my cultural experiences with provide
opportunities to me to fulfill all these
CLP basic need
the first one is competence all people
as human beings we need to feel that we
have the ability to add on or in in the
world we need to know how to behave in
certain situations as you can tell we
can learn by ourself but as a social
psychologists and indeed social learning
is one octave major way that we learn
and through my journey of a cultural
exploration I’m like
I met a lot of people they taught me a
lot of things one thing they teach me is
about the passion about life it’s never
too late to expand your capacity here I
only briefly introduced to people okay
they are so interesting and very funny
but they really taught me a lot like in
the same dimension they are Li and also
Ben Fawley okay he taught me okay
the transport that you can use from home
to school is not only airplane train car
or by bus indeed it can go there by bike
but here please note that his home is
located in the east coast of the United
States and our graduate school is
located in the Midwest of Canada that
bike trip took him more than a month and
to make his life more challenging and
after he graduated from the Graduate
School and she took a buy trip from
Vancouver Canada to the end of South
America it took him about one year okay
it means I okay like he is not that
young okay thirty years something but
still like he mesmerized all the chance
to increase its competence Ben has
another totally different story
he was majored in English literature and
then he moved to graduate school
studying psychology as you might know
there will be a lot of experiments
statistics no t-test
and over all these can stuff but later
on after finishing like his master’s
degree he moved to medical school okay
if you know all these subjects okay
English lecture psychology and medical
school well you know how big the gap is
as the person who only studied
psychology
since my undergrad I can never imagine
how brave man is but at this moment you
will start to wonder oh it seems so
difficult to increase our confidence
we cannot be dead you know physically
good okay like lay or we might not be
there intellectual as bad but indeed is
so not that difficult to expand our
competence he
I will show you one example probably we
can just start to explore and unfamiliar
culture and at this moment you may say
no language you know I do not know how
to speak other language but I told you
as long as you know how to say excuse me
and thank you everything will be okay
remember I like I first day okay I went
to Japan the first day I got lost
okay I do not know how to go to the
hostel I met a Japanese lady on the
street and I asked SUNY Marseille do you
know how to go there please know that I
do not do any translation I just say
SUNY masse and then that is the only
Japanese I know and then I used English
unfortunately the lady could not speak
English but she knew what I asked so she
helped me and brought me to the hostel
like to own the way okay if you had the
pedestrian a bad moment you my first so
interesting because we have a
conversation if we can call it
conversation because on all the way okay
the Japanese lady kept saying Sunni
mosque Sunni mosque and I kept saying no
no no thank you no no thank you
you know for ten minutes although it is
not so called communication but indeed
we mutually understand what we meant
okay so Japanese Japanese ladies I’m so
sorry that she could not talk okay in
English and I felt so grateful that like
she can help me say you know it’s easy
as long as you can say thank you and
excuse me you can increase your
confidence like in the journey of
cultural exploration the second one is
acceptance all human beings we need to
know that we can get support from other
people but here I want to add one
additional part at the same time we need
to be accepted but I think at the same
time we also need to be open to accept
other people so this is what I call the
mutual acceptance that’s why I said you
know the journey can be very easy how we
can you know feel the acceptance when I
live in a multicultural society like
Canada I realize that is so easy to make
all different cultures coexist
like in a peaceful way that is we are
open to understand the differences
across the culture at the same time we
are also open to accept ok to know like
each other as you can see the foot here
ok as a Chinese students we try so hard
to introduce our culture to make you
know so-called foreigner but indeed we
were the foreigner in Canada we try to
persuade the foreigners ok to love the
Chinese culture we organize a lot of you
know cultural stirring activities don’t
make it so serious everything is about
foot ok spend like four years we
succeeded in persuading the Westerners
or non Chinese to fall in love in siege
one spicy food ok and we also like
persuade them to have a good taste about
authentic Chinese hot pot but
unfortunately after four years I still
fail to make them love the during
dessert because most of testing
filibuster you know smelly and also like
during a multicultural expiration you
can see a lot of moments here what I
call the moment when pizza meets a sushi
ok indeed like I will have a lot of
potluck but that is the word I just
learned ok in Canada potluck means what
this means okay each person need to
prepare a dish and then we are brought
there and then in some ways home then we
have a home party there and at that
moment you do not need to ask their
nationality based on their food you know
we are from everywhere ok during the
food exchange time indeed we are
accepting other people at the same time
we are also being accepted by other
people so next time if you really want
to you know have this okay basically
acceptance you can start to introduce
tassel bow
you know the barbecue pork bun to
foreigners first probably that is a good
time to you know have this kind of need
and finally what we call the
protectability that is the meat that we
will need to know how the world is
organized here I did not say you know my
journey
my cultural exploration really teach me
how to increase my sense of
predictability
instead they allows me to protect what
never happened in my life here I only
give two example one is I saw a coin how
old are you okay can you tell me okay
whether you know okay the age of your
best friends probably yes but what about
the age of the first person that you
meet though in the first time hopefully
you will never ask how old are you okay
usually we don’t at least it did not
happen in Hong Kong and it also did not
happen in Canada but interestingly I
attended an orientation camp of hiking
club in Pusan University of South Korea
that’s the first day and you know we
need to introduce ourselves and not
surprisingly everyone followed the
script okay there is a standardized form
of self introduction everyone say for
example hello everyone I am Jo Ann and
I’m majoring in psychology and I am 22
years old you have felt interestingly
every follow the script everyone really
like open to tell the age okay two other
people at that moment I felt a little
bit you know it’s change
why that’s like we need to tell other
people how oh like I am is someone you
know personally sensitive especially to
a female and not young female you know
and then but after you know learning
some basic knowledge about Korean I know
age is very critical because when they
communicate to people who are too near
versus who are senior they use different
form of language such as okay when you
say hello and then they would say onion
say all for the like someone who are
younger than them but for someone who
older they might say oh I know has amiga
okay something like that so I’m gonna oh
then okay something is not appropriate
in Hong Kong
it is something expected in South Korea
the last example I will share it’s about
how to use rice bowl okay I believe that
everyone living here would have a chance
to you know use rice bowl okay no matter
whether you are Chinese or you are not a
Chinese you must know how to use it okay
you must know how to you
have appropriate timing man that is holy
rice ball and it’s okay I’m to the end
of the mute right but interesting me if
you get a chance to with the Korean okay
authentic Korean restaurant you will
find a lot of iron rice bowl can you
imagine that how can you hold the rice
bowl when there’s the soup hot soup
inside when there’s a cold rice inside
how can you do that do maybe you were
saying maybe Koreans have a super
powerful hand they want to you know have
a good training but you didn’t know
according to Korean right or like a
dining manner you are not supposed to
bring your you know rice bowl okay when
you want it take instead the rice bowl
is supposed to live on the table when
you are eating that is what they call
appropriate dining manner now you will
know okay it seems like what we think is
correct indeed can be what is absolutely
wrong in another culture all cultures
create their own values and also their
own norms so that’s why I say the
journey of cultural exploration really
helps me or teach me to learn not to
expect anything everything anything can
happen
finally I want to say okay i’ll you know
freebasing needs acceptance competence
and predictability what I call cap model
in fact when you fulfill all these three
basic needs at the same time you also
fulfill what we call companies including
trust control self esteem and self
coherence if you get a chance to read
this paper I’ll tell you achieve all
these basic needs you will be more
likely to have growth my set this is
what what women prove myself that’s the
mindset that you believe everything can
be changed not only about your
personality not only about your
relationship but also about your
intelligence as long as you have the
growth my set you will believe that with
your effort okay you will change
whatever that you want
I think growth mindset is the key
element for life
learning finally I would like to finish
my talk and I hope everyone will be able
to get some opportunities to explore in
the new culture but remember to bring
with your cap or I hope everyone will be
able to find your own cap during the
journey of cultural exploration thank
you so much [Applause]
