Everyone is an Entrepreneur—The Art of Innovation in Everyday Life | Alex Goryachev | TEDxKGI

I believe that every single person in
this room is an innovator every single
one of us because everything that
surrounds us every object every company
everything was just an idea in the
beginning just like this TED talk that
Andrea and the team put together and
then it happens everything was a startup
but the harsh reality is there is a
circle of life for everything humans and
companies right and the most admired
companies companies that we know are not
gonna be in existence in the next decade
right they’re just going away why is
this happening the answer is very simple
right it’s because of people like you
and I and by the way really helped to
Google to make sure those companies are
not in existence right but it’s because
of people like you and I that are
challenging them with new ideas right
and then their business models become
irrelevant and it’s very important if
you think about it nowadays if you are
on S&P 500 congratulations you have to
work really extra hard to remain there
because not only have to look forward
but you have to constantly look over
your shoulder to be relevant and to stay
relevant and remain in business we’re in
the past you’ve made it you’re there
you’ll be there forever so let’s talk
about disruption and the major
disruptions that we’re seeing I know a
lot of people think about Ober you
probably all some of you took over who
would want to drive taxi I mean or take
taxis it’s awful right that’s that
experience but and we all know the
impact of uber the car ownership the way
it’s changing our lives but I think the
most important phenomena is when do you
think yellow caps notice that uber is
coming they had no clue right just
happen overnight and the cost of taxi
medallion in New York City
for over was over a million bucks now
it’s quarter of that think about it just
overnight right
and it happened despite everything that
kind of my generation that was well you
know I grew up with mantras like never
meet people of the Internet don’t
Garen’s changers cars right but but
that’s exactly what we’re doing right
now and it just kind of not show right
and it’s it’s pretty cool but uber is
happening and it’s changing the not only
changing kind of our experience but it’s
changing the way the car manufacturing
for example because it makes car
manufactures a bit nervous right the
other thing phone TV and media right
just think about a let’s begin with the
phone right
we can’t even explain the expression
hang up the phone
to our kids right and get where where do
you want me to hang it right but the
state of the art bulky satellite dish
right that I was so proud of I remember
I had Dish Network mmm
useless right it just doesn’t belong
anywhere but what’s really interesting
is um just like with uber all of this is
becoming a collection of apps and just
like with uber everyone can be a driver
and everyone can be a passenger here we
phone TV and media everyone could be a
subscriber yet everyone could be a
publisher and get to customers around
the world overnight retail store I know
we all talked about the innovation in
retail but who would have thought when
25 years ago 26 years ago a small
start-up from Seattle sold its first
book on the internet that would
completely completely transform the way
we shop for products and services and
for everything
right right now it’s just it’s just a
completely different experience and if
you think about the quintessential
America when I came to the United States
like the American mole oh my god yeah
the quintessential American mole is gone
and the real estate developers they’re
knocking them down and building
apartments or they’re creating with some
lifestyle concepts right where you have
Ritu mixed retail and residential
because they can’t keep the door open
and what I’m trying to tell you is that
this is all of these examples are
intersection of digital and physical and
they can come at any time from anywhere
what if I were to tell you two years ago
that millions of people overnight would
roam the streets of their cities with
iPhones looking for imaginary creatures
right you tell me it’s a psychiatric
case right in Russia where where I grew
up they think it’s the CIA conspiracy
but right regardless it happened right
it happened and it was gone it was gone
overnight but the people that understood
this they profited from those
transitions and they really took
advantage of it I love Brooks Brothers
so one day okay I admit it I was playing
Pokemon go in a shopping mall where the
Brooks Brothers was and then I noticed
that there’s a lot of Pokemon there so I
went in the store and I’m like oh dude
you have a lot of Pokemon there there
was this guy at the he’s like he I’m
just riding my little experiment I’m
trying to see if it’ll lure in the
customer I’m like well you got me I say
are you a manager here he’s like no I’m
just doing this for myself I’m saying
are you expensing this because it costs
money to to go and lure customers and
he’s like no I’m just doing it from my
own I said one day you’re gonna be the
manager of the store a year later I
walked in he was the manager of the
store and everybody who was working for
him was like double his age right so
it’s it’s very interesting how when we
take advantage of something when we when
we take risks
we get rewarded and this innovation is
not linear right it was Pokemon go
Pokemon gone right today but seriously
today Amazon launch is launching Amazon
gold right it’s the cache later back in
brick-and-mortar it’s a cashless retail
today it’s Amazon’s go there the king of
the hill tomorrow it might be Amazon
gone right I mean again I grew up in in
a large country in the middle of Europe
in Asia
Soviet Union it was gone overnight who
would have thought right but it just
those transitions happen so why are they
happening there couple of things I
really want to look at first thing
Internet of Things is a reality right
look at my household three people I’m
gonna listen a lot of importance my
three-year-old Matthew my wife Maria and
then myself
we have over 60 Internet enabled devices
and we barely have a smart home right
one of those devices is a smart way
scale that’s been publishing the my way
trend to my iPhone which lately I really
don’t like but it’s it’s a reality
everything is hyper connected second
thing is the speed of innovation right I
know we just celebrated 10th year
anniversary of this wonderful device
right the iPhone it certainly changed
our life I think it’s changed human
experience I think the jury is still out
if it’s for good or worse people are
still debating it but what really
created is this virtual app store where
again everyone can become a publisher
and they can put their apps on and then
serve it to customers practically
overnight think about it that did not
exist it’s getting two hundred billion
dollars and it all just takes this
somewhere in the cloud
the third one cost practically nothing
to take risks right nowadays if you want
to try your idea you don’t have to have
office space you don’t have to have
equipment you don’t even have to have
employees right yet you can you can
really try your business and if you need
money to scale there’s plenty of funny
money right you can crowd fund you can
cut fund from friends and family
I recommend you do that but you can
crowdfund with random strangers over the
internet and then scale your idea
globally so the talent and capital fuels
a lot of transitions if I were to talk
about all the technology transitions
here I could fill slides and slides and
slides and slides the one I’m most
passionate about his voice let me go
back to my son Matthew he grows up in
somewhat of a voice enabled home so he
loves talking to Alexa
he’s three years old he’s like Alexa
let’s do this somebody’s listening to
him by the way yeah and following his
commands right so he’s he’s talking to
Alexa which by the way I can’t get my
wife Maria to adopt but and Matthew has
now had high expectations for innovation
he expects everything in the household
to be voice enabled so we have our
little vacuum cleaner going and he’s
like vacuum stopped vacuum come here
right and and he gets quite upset well
it doesn’t and I went to his preschool
and I shared this with his preschool
teacher and what she said she said Alex
believe it or not young kids they go to
the window and they’re swipe their
fingers like this because they expect
everything in life to be stretchable but
how long until it is right and if you
think about the business transitions the
one that I’m passionate about is
subscription I mean nowadays we
subscribe to everything our groceries
for 10 bucks you can subscribe to all
the music in the world and just consume
and listen we have two cats in the
household we subscribe to their litter
and then magically every month there’s
like four letter boxes on our doorsteps
but what I don’t see in my neighborhood
are people subscribing to New York Times
even Sunday edition right if it’s all
done right but there’s so many new
things that are happening and no matter
what those transitions are the one which
I think will all kind of keep us all in
business and keep us all alert is
security because no matter what will
happen on the top or in the bottom
security will keep us
business because we can now that we
understand the physical safety and
digital safety it’s kind of the same
thing it’s very important mentally I
work with the internet for many many
years but I can’t get my head to install
an Internet connected lock on my front
door right so it’s a it’s a very
interesting gun it’s a lot of
transitions a lot of talent a lot of
capital think about what you want to do
right with all those transitions think
about how you can change your experience
and bring it to your everyday life so
what’s the recipe there are a couple of
thoughts I want to leave you with the
first one make what you do your passion
so a lot of people say follow your
passion very important right but making
what you do your passion is as important
you don’t have to go and start a
business or startup you can improve you
can find something broken and your
community in your school in your
neighborhood in your city and you can
improve it and we’ve heard TED talks
about that just just earlier today and
you can be passionate about that and you
can use all those technologies right do
your homework I think that’s one is very
important I worked with startups for
many many years and somehow they keep
advancing things and then they never
bother to Google if they even exist
right but I don’t get arrogant at the
same time I remember I worked for a very
hot startup at the time called Napster
and one day I got a call from a
recruiter and recruiter said hey Alex
there’s a small company in Palo Alto do
you want to go and had an Operations
team there and I said what’s the startup
they said Facebook I said are you
kidding me myspace already exists right
so again do your homework but but be
careful look at where you’re adding
value the other thing is I work with a
lot of engineers and the question is not
can it be built but should it be built
find your tribe the lonely innovator is
a myth it takes teams of people to make
things happen
and innovation is about inclusion and
diversity it’s all about the rare art of
listening to other people’s ideas and
coming together to make those ideas a
reality walk the talk a lot of people
think innovation is glamorous you look
at the startup scene today it’s it’s so
glamorous right but it’s all about the
process and discipline because only when
you have process and discipline you can
actually make your ideas and reality and
last but not the least it’s about
bringing you new value because you have
to be solving somebody else’s problem
and if you’re creating that value if
you’re changing the world if you’re
changing people lives you’re doing
something meaningful all my life I like
if I look at my life’s mantra it’s very
simple form follows thought if you can
imagine it you can create it thank you
so much
