[Applause]
my mother died young too young for me
too young for her too young for my
children who don’t remember her and I
carried a lot of anger and I carried
sorrow inside of me for a couple of
years after she died and I decided that
I could write a song I could write a
song to express my feelings to share
what I had experienced with other people
and maybe they could relate to that and
[Music]
it was an ordinary life
[Music]
mean lemon pie
[Music]
she wasn’t cool not much glamour she
didn’t marry for love fine
that’s how
became my mother she loves me
call the police it’s a pre-crime call
call the police it’s taking her time
she could see me too
love’s on a face
call the police it’s stealing her mind
come
I was watching the March for our lives
on television watching all these young
people all across the country leading
these marches and speaking at these
marches because there was something that
needed to be said and something that
needs to be done
so I needed to do something so I wrote
this song
[Music]
scattered clouds across the brilliant
I take a moment to consider you hurry
her sound that makes me shiver
you better run you
better hide gather up the children get
them inside I don’t know if I can stop
him you can say I tried you’d better run
heart racing in our chest not much to do
but to await our future and pray for all
doors slamming
windows shatter bitter smoke hazy
[Music]
through broken glass I look out into the
hallway
I know you didn’t stop you I can say you
tried you didn’t
this is no time to make some empty
please loving hearts are tough let’s
build the world the way it’s meant to be
[Music]
enough so no to politicians raising
money with check signed by McCann are a
you have bartered your allegiance
[Music]
only this to say you better I’ll be
marching with the children in the
streets outside I don’t know if we can
stop you say we try
[Music]
I’ll be voting with the children in the
streets outside I don’t know if
[Music]
[Applause]
you better
[Music]
we were given a songwriting challenge to
write a song inspired by a piece of art
we were sent a picture of a piece of art
in the corner of this painting there was
a compass and that compass reminded us
that sometimes we get lost sometimes
maybe this regret on his lips if he
he was driven out into this world an
left behind the safety of his home if he
knows of safety
[Music]
someone’s son
[Music]
some nights he finds a safe place to be
[Music]
where words and battles don’t get mixed
up he might sleep the sleep of freedom
if he knows is a free
where did he come from someone’s up
[Music]
me that sliver of light between here and
gone I choked on my embarrassment and
run from soon
[Music]
shadows
where did he go
[Music]
shadows
[Music]
[Applause]
this is a song I wrote actually when I
was working for Jacob’s heart here in
Santa Cruz I wrote them a theme song
which was very heavy that you can
imagine working for Jacob’s Harbor an
organization that works with families
that have children with cancer and this
seems some people would just every time
I sang it and I needed to have something
to tack onto the end of it to kind of
bring them back so this is we’re kind of
attacking something on to this to bring
you back to because when all comes down
to it our greatest creative act of these
lives that we live
[Music]
mm-hmm
and if you don’t tune your guitar while
[Music]
life is a song to be sung from the party
listen closely you’ll hear it singing
which join our voices together and let
it from my heart there will be time that
you will sing alone
there will be time when you’ll join in
the Laura’s feel what happens when
everyone joins in the song from my heart
got to sing it yourself can’t be sung by
anyone else some songs are short while
some others are long what really matters
is that you are singing fill the world
with the music you have to hear from the
heart
whether you’re singing solo or duet you
still have to fashion your own precious
bellowed taking turn trying to find the
right bar Lenny comes from the heart
got to sing it yourself can’t be sung by
anyone else
you’ve got to sing it yourself can’t be
sung by anyone else
when your singing has come to an end
when it seems that you’ve run out of
verses hope that the others who heard
you remembered you sing from the heart
[Music]
join our voices together
with Dora wasn’t together
from my heart I come from the heart
[Music]
[Applause] thank you
