Empowering Youth for a better 2084 | Diego Donis | TEDxHautLacSchool

[Music]
whoa we used to talk listen to each
other’s thoughts
now our lies we lived through schools we
spend more time on our Instagram feed
and learning things we I really need we
my really need cuz Eddie we’ve time the
little cone very selfish when it comes
to go power and money we believe wanting
to be like stars on TV
but you see we’re living in a fake
reality cuz you gotta learn and live by
living and learn to love true loving be
present in the moment
take fighting in love and not what you
you always want what you cannot have
just peed presence not enough people
like to flash that thing it all just
feels like a big big dumb game
[Music]
I have prepared a presentation based on
the work of two of our students here are
all luck I’ve been very inspired by
Julius lyrics that you just have and by
the moving words written in an article
by JA published in the school newspaper
as a matter of fact how could I talk
about adolescence and social media if
not from the point of view of today’s
adolescents I know it’s difficult to
tell but I’ve reached the point the age
in which psychologists define as the end
of adolescence yes that is the 18 which
you reach an and independent role in
society encodes roughly are the lessons
from 10 to 20 and it starts with the
changes that puberty brings along both
hormonal and and physical the good news
are is that experts claim that is
getting longer and longer been extended
to 25 parents isn’t that just what you
wanted to hear probably not so where
does my interest come from he comes from
the five and I’m part of the generation
that had it both ways with and without I
spend the first part of my adolescence
without social media doing normal kid
stuff that’s me with the border the ball
was bigger than me and then I was
introduced to it through very modern
platforms like you can see also being an
educator for the past 10 years and
witnessing the students changes in
behavior has further contributed to my
entry so Julia started her song by
mentioning my making a reference to the
difference in the past between how we
used to live our lives and how we live
them today so I thought that I would
dive into my family’s archives and
Google social media and other lessons
and this is the best match that I got so
the picture was taken a few years before
1984 in a tiny farming and mining
village in the northwest of Spain Maya
had 12 siblings and it goes without
saying that there was no social media no
TV acting and this is what I just found
with the same search
different isn’t it so the difference
between a face-to-face interaction and
an online one is that with something as
elementary as the census in the former
all the senses are involved including
haptic perception the winners of your
body position and your movements so much
more and richer information in the
latter it’s all about reading it’s all
and maybe some emojis if you’re lucky so
no wonder why something the Millennials
are socially impaired it takes a lot of
practice to get socially better in a
screen won’t do the work for you further
difference between the past and the
present are pointed out by a national
trust survey in the UK which revealed
that children spend half the time
outdoors in comparison with their
parents generation so let’s talk about
the present now where are we now Julia
sank as well in power and money we
believe Noah echoes her words by
reminding us not to sacrifice our
personality to become what society wants
us to be this is an age-old concept that
is getting worse and worse with social
media when you feel it when you first
meet someone the first question that you
usually ask them quite awkwardly is what
do you do when I say I’m a PE teacher
people tend to come up with a lot of
excuses to leave and they give me a lot
of sympathy it’s bizarre isn’t it so for
me what is the implication what are the
implications of this I think we must
come up with a needed new definition of
success who do we consider successful
why is it Fame is it money or is it
being an overall kind person with a
strong set of values someone who cares a
wonder about the moment someone who
cares about each other’s well-being and
we must do this not just school but also
parents as well before we move on are
great role models would be great models
for there for the students for the
children in us in an study by column
Annie Henry they pointed out that during
adolescence
parents function as role models is a
surprisingly significant one you
probably wouldn’t have guessed that
because they don’t listen much to you or
to me but I can also tell you that they
are observing 24/7 and they learn more
through imitation or mirroring than
through lectures so from the way you
treat our waiter to the way you face a
challenge they are always learning and
before we dive into social media and
other lessons it is important to mention
that I believe social media is not to
blame for all the problems related to
other lessons or mind time as a matter
of fact in ng Asian Greek times around
2400 years ago they already have naughty
children in a quote that some attribute
to Socrates we can read the children now
love luxury they have bad manners
contempt for authority they show the
respect to their elders they contradict
their parents and our tyrants over the
teachers if I ask you when do you think
this was written you probably have said
two minutes ago two thousand four years
ago so social medias not to blame for
everything the definition of social
media forms of electronic communication
through which users create online
communities to share information ideas
personal messages and other content such
as videos we can see some of the
platforms there and again Julia son we
are living in a fake reality people like
to flash their fame want it to be like
stars on TV or social media you are also
mentioned social media dioxide in some
of the health problems attributed to the
increasing use of social media in a
study but why would and Scott in 1990 in
2016 97 percent of young people use
social media now it’s probably 99.99% so
some of those health issues are poor
mental health overall distress increased
tendency to multitask poor asleep low
like suffix satisfaction and I find and
all those moon and I find this quite
distressing especially we think that
adolescence brain is not fully developed
until they are 25 so if we adults
struggle ourselves with the dangers of
social media
after the equations for other lessons no
one just well I just mentioned now but
about the brain but also their
day-to-day problems and there are a lot
peer pressure
academic pressure to go to a good
university that maybe is not gonna be
worth anything in the future we don’t
know parents pressure alcohol hormones
you name it so I think now is the right
time for me to put my student on a cycle
of psychology hub and I came up with a
few I came up I pointed out a few key
concepts that I consider very important
to understand implications of social
media and based on these try to propose
some strategies both for other lessons
and for parents so the first one is my
favorite one when someone disagrees with
me are you on all right and you know
it’s because of that I’m right you know
so cognitive dissonance a very
unpleasant feeling people experience
when presented with new information that
challenges our strong core belief that
they hold this is the reason in my
opinion well why people still eat me if
I’ve eaten in my whole life and doctors
even say that meat is healthy not
anymore
why should I stop that is why people are
struggled to put the seed but at the
beginning if I if I never whereas it
wore a seatbelt and I’m still fine
why should I bother if I was brought up
with social media
why would I limit my use of it now
remember that we’re talking about
digital natives the second concept of
heuristics and biases there are
different theories that say how rational
or irrational we humans are and I think
we are both so I’m my thoughts are in
line with the dual process theory that
the fence that there are two systems
when taking decisions sits system number
one is fast emotional and more automatic
is based on heuristics and biases system
number two is slow conscious and more
rational so if you have to bet which
system do you think adolescents use more
often in our social media era do you
then think that the system number one is
good to allow for our doll essence to
reflect to
have all philosophical reflections about
their own use of social media being
aware of these both systems and the
heuristics and biases can make us take
wiser decisions and know ourselves
better which is very important and last
but not least maturation gap between the
prefrontal cortex and the limbic system
the prefrontal cortices is key for
higher-order thinking abilities such as
planning control of attention
self-control self-regulation is less
mature than the limbic system the limbic
system is important for emotions and how
we respond to rewards and Punishment as
we said is more mature and it becomes
much more easily aroused after puberty
it controls the higher-order thinking
abilities during adolescence and this
translates into an increase in
impulsivity impulsivity and a decrease
in thinking my son familiar so the way
researchers put it is it’s like having
the accelerator press down to the floor
without good brakes this mismatch in the
maturation of brain networks added to
the solution the dangers of social media
is definitely a recipe for disaster so
it is true that other Italians are very
vulnerable but it’s also true that it is
a time of unlimited of almost unlimited
opportunities where the brain can change
dramatically it’s able to change it’s
capable of great change where the
environment can have very profound
effects so rather than being just one of
Ronaldo 74 million followers in Tudor
take on a sport rather than which is
with them watching Taylor Swift videos
on Instagram learn how to play an
instrument or perhaps to both adults
don’t worry it is never too late if you
want to change thank you to neurogenesis
so the fact that 700 neuron cells are
born every day and neuroplasticity the
ability of the brain to change is never
too late if you want to change obviously
your brain is not as plastic when you
are 50 as when you are 15 but it’s never
too late
so what does the future look like after
a very thorough and deep reflection of
ten seconds while checking my Instagram
feed and pet in my neighbor’s cat like I
came up with a conclusion that is not my
place to say it is up to all of us how
2084 how we want it to look like and
despite very pessimistic cues such as
the increased number of selfies the
increased superficial online
communication the fact that less than
300,000 people like the school of life
on Facebook which is a page that talks
about philosophy psychology and culture
applied to everyday problems versus 30
million who like Kim kardashian-west I
don’t even know who she is the number of
comments on sexy photos versus the
number of comments on per environmental
post or political post political
corruption climate change global warming
oh sorry I think I think I got carried
away
I I think this is what 2084 looked like
at the moment a white piece of paper it
is up to us into our everyday decisions
very conscious decisions how we want it
to look like so if you let me preach for
just one more minute
I’ll let you go I will recommend you all
to use any technique that I use that
works for you that can be meditation
yoga walks on the forest pair in your
pet cooking gardening whatever it is in
order to ship the attempts to take the
attention away from the electronic
devices from the social media and
shifted it to all yourself parents get
involved set limits to the use of social
media with your adolescents remember
they do not have a fully developed
self-control also talk about rules what
photos will be post on social media so
we just put cool photos of our trips or
so we also include some more
philosophical discounts discussions
every now and then
adolescence please use social media use
it but do not let social media use you
and then become it’s slave so how can
you apply whatever you have learned
today within your environment No
in yourself better than anyone else in
order to make a collective effort
towards a better and more and more
Pacific 2084 go out there even from the
social media point of view and try
different strategies see what you
resonate more with and don’t take we’re
by work whatever anyone tells you
including myself in the last question a
very important one for the future what
future do we want to build in order to
be happy with ourselves when the next
generation of other lessons ask us the
same question Julia just asked us a
second ago what have we become what have
we become
thank you [Applause]
