Emerging Technologies | Tom Edwards | TEDxOakLawn

all right it’s an absolute pleasure
today get’em unable silence talking
about the evolution to once you started
your day what captures your memories
connection with your love
let’s get you from point A to point B
Cox endless entertainment options you
have against it already to mobile device
it does not are in your hands
let out look at it for a minute think
about your relationship with I think
about the fact we’re computing power in
any generation and that’s just again so
today we’re gonna look at my research
we’re gonna wipe the slate and we’re
gonna take a trip in the very near
future so when the mobile device is no
longer to people with primary way in
which interface but Before we jump to
the future I like to talk about the past
a little bit so growing up in the late
seventies early teens I don’t love Star
Wars but instead of wanting to be Han
Solo or the extrude liner I was just
fascinated in the past interview on
March 22 words and how the technology
with the Star Wars universe seemed to
just enable and empower the characters
at every step of life growing up in the
80s you definitely weren’t quite Star
Wars technologies it’s worth it I loved
gaming and watching China robot shows
but even then my general of shows was
predetermined by mr. Schilling just been
to watch the entire series but heading
into the 90s there was hope we start to
see this this connectivity that comes
online we see the graphical user
interface coming around more important
that we begin to see the acceleration so
I got my first mobile phone at 1998 and
then we saw from 1998 of it to balance
just honey
types of thoughts and actually we’re
talking today as one of my all-time
favorite right and this is a key point
to consider about innovation when we
talk about innovation or disruption it’s
about removing a barrier so but also by
building on something
so as we move forward into 2007 it
transformational innovation the iPhone
there’s a clean user experience as a
touch interface as a consolidation of
all these of the doctors didn’t want but
I would argue what was even more
important was the launching the
absolutely because what that did is that
allowed for this democratization of
knowledge to create applications that
were personal aspirator your life so
when we think about that it’s amazing
and the impact was almost immediately
felt but of course of the next five
years that one in five people had it on
this one you fast forward to today 95%
of Americans mobile devices so as you
think about that big we know that you
did what he evil is excessively and with
the accessibility were empowered we’re
empowered to create more power to
implement or incontinence
we created 400 million selfies 95
billion to those industry and would
create about 300 hours of YouTube
content every minute
part of that process would definitely
empower to create when it comes to
amplify our expectations when it comes
to content you’ve got social channels
that allow us to amplify and exceed our
message everywhere and it’s changed our
behavior we expect to be able to consume
information in real time so the
Economist names who is influences
changing influence no longer comes from
Hollywood it’s coming from the YouTube
streamer that your kids are watching
potentially getting streamers etc I see
it in my own home I have three Genesis
15:13 tenure and it’s amazing you watch
they’re part of their personal first
channel
they learned to swipe what they learn to
speak and when you think about haters of
Gen Z you’ve got two and a half hours
today on Dominion content in consume an
hour a half of a game in about 15
minutes every single day listening to
music by trundling Gen Z is going to
represent 40% of consumers in the United
States and their behaviors and
expectations are quitting impact the
experiences that we as individuals will
have how technology there’s an
expectation for on-demand content
there’s an expectation the cameras
become the new Holmesburg because the
expectation in YouTube is remote control
and augmented reality their filters is
just a way of life in terms of allowing
curry – speaking of creation so 69% Gen
Z considers the camera as a platform and
that’s an important one is for life 66%
have her YouTube channel and when
Millennials are all about co-creation of
content for all so now we start talking
this is really important to consider
because these experiences are just
becoming expected hardware manufacturers
and others never democratizing the
ability to create so when we start
getting into all of these various
expectations that are coming of how we
rise in technology now you begin to
align all of those expectations with its
knowledge systems and I used to talk
about this I give disruption but now
what I see is exponential acceleration
what’s going to happen is that our
environments are going to begins without
us versus us in
and would be thinking about why are we
in this golden age of AI our three
primary reasons the first is David in
the last year we created 10 trillion
gigabytes of data 10 trillion to obtain
you know is oil or artificial
intelligence the second reason is this
ever-evolving advancement operatives you
may have heard of machine learning which
is unitary operators teeth learn English
very official intelligent systems
training themselves or computer vision
and image processing but the fact that
we have all of this data analysis and
power rules plus there’s a decrease in
costs of graphical processing it’s all
leading towards this will make you say I
what does that means with the videos so
43 percent identity 53 percent of
Millennials 42% of genetics oh they
wanted to make their lives and so what a
lot of you may not realize is that
you’re already interacting with a donor
databases so 35 million individuals over
the last year basically use some type of
virtual assistant conversation
experience and maybe in your living room
your kitchen right now the reality is
were all degree virtual assistants
around our planet so the key thing to
consider what’s and we’re moving towards
of times where artificial intelligence
is going to basically
redefine how we interface and interact
with technology we’re going to move over
from desktop phone voice vision and
touch so we’re learning interactive
interfaces
the key thing to understand is that
voice is going to be the first area
that’s an enhancement option that’s
incredibly important to consider so as
we begin to move along and we continue
to have these dependencies on on virtual
assistants we’re gonna begin to see the
rise of what’s known as the proximate
whether as these systems become more
intelligent and they’re able to actually
predict four of our means
understand situations this is a time
where these individuals are kind of
problem or arte today responsibility on
to these virtual assistants how you can
do to say you want to get into so both
you and the individual you’re eating
dinner with essentially both having
sponsors or agents that were longer than
half of the factory they are no one
understand with rush watching what’s
your food preferences on whether or not
you have food allergies where you’ve
been ultimately the reviews of the
restaurant they can help navigate
traffic lines working so again it’s just
all about providing and we implement
across the generations need to talk
about this concept gen Z is all about
scheduling personal time when you talk
about Millennials not replenishing
purchases through these systems they
want their agents to have Wireless and
be able to just take care of certain
things when you talk about you max it’s
more about managing finances so as long
as these systems can enhance or a lot of
those kind of predict certain things
that we need this is a very key point to
consider so that was a choice now as we
shift from voice into vision we’re going
to talk a little bit about computer
vision
computer vision is basically a form of
artificial intelligence that allows for
essentially understand high-level
contextual understanding of environment
we’ve been actually trying to students
think of it this way it can basically
make your camera tell you how we talked
about the importance of the cameras the
home screen as well as have to create
the platform 3 from what you’ll begin to
see happening this you’ll see this
alignment avoids plus vision or even
understand context within your world
around you it opens up this new
possibility of how we search and how we
crap and it’s also not that difficult to
believe to understand that we can move
beyond the little lies into another form
factor we start looking at these
different interfaces and finally there’s
a notch so when you think about natural
gesture bases
you think about this connection between
the true visible if it really comes down
to our ability to work our environment
becomes another sensor it’s so thinking
about us yeah
preparing for this talk I realized I’ve
had an 8 t mobile devices in the last 20
years London’s been incredibly
consistent throughout that experience in
his programmed in the operating system
so when you think about this bridge of
how we’re gonna get from where we are
today to where talking about what voice
vision and touch it starts with
conferences and here’s what happens what
we’re going to see happen is we’re gonna
see the virtual assistant become the
primary way which we interface with our
technology record about the App Store
being innovation it hasn’t been
disrupted since 2008 we still have
hundreds of applications on earth and
yet at the same time really been used by
so what’s gonna end up happening it is
this concept or idea of scenes where the
virtual system will be able to pull
together multiple elements of
applications into an experience I’ll
give you an example of what’s called
scene designs so as we’re thinking about
this I have to have a different
application right now into a place to
store my car to listen to music in this
example of scene design what ends up
happening is the system is intelligent
enough to basically predict this violent
I like to check in two hours early and
essentially stream great I didn’t notice
that when we pour on and to actually map
the location that is how we’re gonna
take so here’s what we get to the
prediction when we no longer going to
have to use the mobile device it’s the
primary interface intuitive so my
research is things were discussed for
2021 three form factors feasibility mass
adoption by consumers so prediction is
that by 22
we’re gonna reach a point in time to
where halting little interfaces of scale
such as voice vision and touch through
differently for factors such as glasses
contacts earbuds really is when we’re
going to see the shift away from the mobile device into our environment
