Dyslexic Education: A Call to Action | Ersin Oztoycan | TEDxEMUniversity

I see come to the blackboard and spell
telephone no go back to your seats and
write it out 100 times
toko DPL in pH o-n-e let’s see can’t
spell Taylor ever seen can’t spell
telephone Earth’s in can’t spell
telephone that was the song and they
will write my telephone my parents with
my teachers the telling me to try harder
would solve the problem and we need in
the blame for my anger was placed on my
shoulders instead of giving me support I
was given a label so I was 8 years old I
remember running home from school in
tears standing in front of my car mom I
hate school I hate it I absolutely hate
it if a moment say to me but enjoy it I
wasn’t sure what I should be doing but
we need all the labels because school
act for me was more like a judicial
system a court a place where you go if
you’ve committed a crime a place where
there’s a judge a jewelry and witnesses
a place where you’ll receive
my crime was not being able to learn at
the same pace as the other children in
my class my judge was my teacher Miss
Mac batter six foot tall with a huge
beehive hairstyle but made her look even
taller and stereos you already send the
problem what everyone spoke with us
tonight
cockney accent have you ever come across
this microphone in your life there were
weaknesses to my party the class would
ease quite weeds of evidence against me
I see stupid because whenever this ask
her to go to the blackboard and spell
work she failed her seems lazy dismissed
keeps telling them to try harder I see
so is whenever me suspects stand up and
read in front of the class she played so
long miss tells her to sit back now I
had a good defense team my parents
hard-working people but nowhere near
strong enough to stand up to the chief
judge miss McFadden good continuously
sending my trial was a lengthy one but
continued for at my school right from
time to time the judges and the
witnesses would change but the evidence
against me continues until a lot later
on in life and then the judgment day
right I felt my ankle pain exams and I
was sentenced to a lifetime except
without that shake my confidence until
May 25 I discovered I was stupid I was
amazing
I wasn’t slow I was dyslexic which meant
that like millions of other dyslexic
people around the world I process
information using the right side of my
brain developmental dyslexia is a
learning difficulty that affects over
15% of the population dyslexic children
have a normal or above-average IQ but
most will fail at school due to a lack
of understanding and support I believe
the miss my friends of the world and
hopefully not to our support don’t you
agree
I demand a retrial I demand my
self-confidence to be replenished I
demand my university degree it’s taken
me over 14 years to realize but it’s not
the end of the world if you can’t spend
as good as others because we all have
different abilities and talents that’s
what makes us who we are
my story is just a small example of how
childhood experiences can have an impact
on one’s adult life
to this day I still suffer with anxiety
and self issues it’s taken me this long
to realize that failing that school
doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to
fail in life you just need to look that
the famous dyslexics around the world to
see back but Tom Cruise would be
Goldberg Steve Jobs Jamie Oliver Steven
Spielberg who only discovered he was
dyslexic a teenager
each and every one of them have their
own story to say exactly the same with
mine as the civil rights activist Martin
Luther King said I have a dream I too
have a dream I have a dream to create an
education system but it will have
children to learn without being judged
or having to compete with their peers
but first we need to understand that
there’s a distinction between an
inability to learn and an inability to
learn due to the way opening taught in a
quest to create a reformed education
system I carried out a little bit of
research into education systems of other
countries and they carried out their own
rules and I came across Finland global
leaders in education through 16 years so
what’s the secret to their success well
first of all they believe that they need
to eliminate stress in a child’s life
because stress is a huge obstacle in any
child’s learning process they believe
that children aren’t ready to learn the
skills of reading writing and spending
into the age of seven so children don’t
start planning school until the age
kindergarten is based on play because
they believe that play is an important
part of any child’s learning process
homework is non-existent
statutory exams they don’t need extra
exams until the age of sixteen private
education and tuition is
existent all the cheese will go to the
state schools teachers have to complete
an initial five-year master’s degree in
order to qualify as a teacher but in
return they will get kristenuj and
higher pay within the theme of today’s
event I hope that I’ve been successful
in creating the small spark within your
heart so that you can actually help me
bring about a reformed education system
for children that will embrace them and
allow them to learn the joy of learning
that will allow them to use all their
senses to be able to have creative
learning as the my fellow dyslexic
Albert Einstein said we’re all geniuses
but if you try and judge a fish by its
ability to climb a tree it’ll make it
some time I’m believing that it’s stupid
thank you [Applause]
