Does technology affect brain development? | Jason Teo | TEDxPSBAcademy

when I was very very young I live in a
component in gayden in this component of
many many neighbors many families and we
share a little hot a wooden hut that all
of us go there to do our business and
every few days our nice toy uncle
welcome to clear the I cannot
remember can never forget the kudos
Trotta yes and what was so vivid what
smell the Mehcad and the newspaper we
used to kidnap excite when I was in
primary school bus pass only five cents
was that noisy very sugary and a
conductor come to give us a bus the
kidney punch and of course it the
accountable for money pay him one of our
favorite pastime was going to collect
all his use the kid you know I remember
I went to the bus interchange collect
like like a bring home and try to find
whether this and cow sequence because
series in the number in order we had to
change master chem our friends and if I
can find a series of number like 1 1 1 1
2 2 2 2 2 3 SEC remember consecutively
what are you that’s very valuable I’m so
proud to show my friend YC 1 no 1 to 999
that’s how we pass our child II when I
was working starting over at time my
boss gave me a pager and we beats at the
key run to the nearest neighbourhood
telephone with my coins in da and
contact my boss and if I call him back
too late I’ll get scolded now 2:01 it I
live in a wonderful
htb apartments where they leave bring me
up to my floor
I don’t worry about whether the roof or
leak or whether they be flood
when their incomes but I do you know
enjoy and Remy sent those companies
there’s one wah
you know black trees you know enjoy
myself in those companies and now if you
go to the little island and pullout bin
you understand what I mean for transport
now we just go and tap to the boss I’m
MRT so seamless and all this information
to add ult a click it and it’s already
able to design you know our public
services I now have a personal chauffeur
that’s on call 24/7
it brings me from where I am to anywhere
on the go in many parts that were the
personal chauffeur is crap uber when I
go to toilet down today there’s some
toilets there warm up the seat and I sit
down it automatically watch my back side
now we’re handphone it’s more the pager
just become my personal existence he
wakes me up early the morning tell me is
what ready to do reminds me of all my
appointment for today is now I become my
my wallet my bank and everything else I
need to survive for today imagine live
without a hand phone and laptop in our
office in our home and our school
technology interestingly for the past 50
years compared to the past 2000 years of
the exponential growth and accelerating
power of this technology has totally
totally disrupt the way I communicate
the way I commute the way I live play
and learn now on early years of our
first invention of the printing press
we’re now looking at the next phase of
chip design Corder 3d chips our brain
has 100 billion neurons connected inside
the little chips in your PC contains 100
billion transistors inside and they’re
compressed into one thin layer of
silicon wafer 3d chips now we are able
to combine the huge power of a processor
together in a huge flash memory of a
storage capacity into one hidden layer
and now we’re using new material with
known as carbon nanotubes and these
carbon nanotubes is mechanical
properties electrical properties and
most importantly thermal properties are
so much more superior than the silicon
cubes we use instead of having four
edges to connect the PC together to our
to our M now we have layers they can
integrate and connect layers and layers
millions of integration each layers such
Chile chips it’s predicted to be even
1,000 times fastest and our chip nozzoli
what it says I gotta take us maybe 10 to
15 years because I become commercialized
but I’ll be amazed how power how small
our gadgets you know thank you who could
become
the question is there’s so much
advancement technology so question is
that our brain there’s technology affect
our brain development do we become more
stupid do we becomes change has our
memory or have our brain become much
more worse off because we rely so much
on technology what were human be like
hundred years maybe a thousand years
from now the brain is you’re aware of
your the very assistant of a human being
how well your bill works effect how
happy you are how effective you as a
person and the effect the current
relationship we people around you the
brain is like a muscle okay
the more you use it the more vibrant and
more powerful become we don’t use it you
lose it
this arm of mine if I would try it here
for the next three to five years you
become useless and I might have to
amputate our brain
well prune away those connection that we
don’t use and your strengthen those
connections that we keep practicing
practicing but most important it create
new connection with novel and new things
that we do every day so the key to
mental health is actually to do
different and new things everything they
are like so many people ask me a
question you know this how do we improve
our pin but good and bad we are now
start to outsource many of our brain
functions to technology we have now
source our memory to our gadgets now our
source our knowledge and information to
mr. Google and now Google has become my
teacher
we are not outsource our spatial
awareness
– GPS ways google map and now we are
even outsourced know-how thinking to
call artificial intelligence and these
artificial intelligence they are not
powerful they can able to predict
analyze predict future future trends
much more powerful in us and now with
technology we are able to use our brain
to control our posterity lips as you
think bin we scientist has now been
trying to file in fact researching how
we can convert our thoughts into text
imagine in the future we wear a special
top cap and then I look at it hey John
where are you screen and John reply I’m
a stop back okay coming soon scary but
it’s gonna come so how much technology
were able changes we can run away and
avoid technology is everywhere
technologies about us ok so because the
technology we become so addicted to it
smart phone user is they admitted that
they look at your screen every few
minutes know in a very few minutes at a
time even for myself I was looking
around for my phone hey you know weapon
is anybody calling me am I missing
anything and why are people not
addiction human has been addicted
thousands of years to drugs alcohol and
now for the past 10 years scientists and
psychologists are looking at the
epidemic human addiction to technology
addition ladies are smoking first puff
is horrible second path you start to get
used to it the more pop you have you
certa enjoy it and the more you take the
more you take you start to be addicted
to it so then the question is that human
has ability not to be addicted some
parents always asking me Jason
computer games is it good for my
children where the children become more
aggressive less human less so sure what
happened there is when you play computer
games there’s definitely a link between
exposure to violent computer games and
increase aggressive behavior research
says it these games many times because
the sanitiser human emotion because less
empathetic because less more accepting
of violence in amigas as more aggressive
toss and sometimes give us to be more
aggressive not behavior a few years ago
I have a child
set 1 what’s been computer game at home
4 to 6 hours every day the mom was so
fed up so mom just block off off the
fish wiping Hwy he was so furious you
were so angry you’re so frustrated it
took the whole screen and smash it
other side if user right now computer
games computer games has shown to
improve many cognitive function for
example spatial visual awareness pattern
recognition but the reaction time better
five hand coordination better
decision-making faster decision making
and problem solving skills it does
sometimes helps up in this question is
it so every day we are bombarded with so
much information everywhere we go how
easily distracted by all this technology
the ability to focus is a very very
important mental skills that we need to
thrive in our very competitive
environment when you want to do a very
cognitive demanding tasks like for
example like preparing for exam writing
a piece of paper the key to success is
not to be distracted where promise
technology is that is designed with this
continuous flow of distraction
interruption to keep us English you or
their devices so it’s up to you whether
do we allow technology to destroy us to
interrupt our life or KDS research of
technology we put your button this
question is that sometimes you are using
a social media Facebook Instagram
doesn’t become less human does it become
more and more socially a pet like you
know like the movie called real player
one you know yeah you know oddly
portrayed the car life you know 60% and
behind the virtual world because
technology is so fun times a day we
don’t need to have this face-to-face
interaction anymore there’s no need for
us to meet up you know what’s the point
of coming to a Tech Talk when I can you
know view it in the internet already now
research shows that because of social
media we become more and more isolated
more sellers up more and more detached
now customer more individualistic
I have a friend a family friend he was
so excited after passing the exam even
for the second interview he was looking
for this government agency job you’re so
excited at all you been getting but you
didn’t get in
so because of us after second TV was
rejected he was so depressed and he stay
in his room for the next six months and
I have to go to encourage him right cuts
and slim it below is many times we are
using technology to sell Medicaid you
know to sue our so we use MTV’s you use
Korean movies because so many been
gadgets and sometimes all these
technology has that you creating more
and more mental health problem that we
start to we stop to seek help when
people are nervous as you can see
everywhere I see in a shopping mall
sometimes the whole family the mom the
dad the kids are out iPad an iPhone
80% of human communication comes from
nonverbal cues our tone our body
language our guests years you know
social medias sometimes you know
deprived of the opportunity for
spontaneous social interaction I contact
self-regulation many of us juror now
today Turkey they are losing life skills
people skills
and many of them do not know wise
streets my auto so the question now is
technology is affecting everything we do
so what can we do about it in fact as
you say technology is good for the brain
but the problem is the overuse or the
excessive use all the over reliance on
orous technology we should never allow
certain be physically emotionally
mentally handicapped by our technology
just a fire is a very good tool for us
to cook a wonderful me
by the same time fire can burn a house
down technology don’t need to defy us we
define the kind of technology we won we
defined a current media we consume every
day our life for example there was many
many developer announced today they are
looking at designing computer games
there’s more pro-social more empathy
promoting games and now they’re trying
to use this game to how kids to be more
cooperative more autistic having a
better perspective taking and also able
tourists other people behavior nowadays
it’s a great great emphasis on human
centric design thinking in creating our
new technologies look at what the human
need and not what the technology can
give us there are many many platform now
you know in social call EKOS a platform
that a promoting our service team
self-confident and now they are looking
at something called virtual empathy you
know creating that in our virtual
community I always have teachers you
know that come to me hey please give our
children one hour every day of
unstructured free play don’t control
them if you have kids one hour free play
everything they need communication
skills conflict resolution social skills
problem-solving will automatically be
built among these keys which are now so
lagging character empathy compassion
consideration all these areas can be
built just allowing the kids to play
among themselves the power choice we
live in a real world we are not living
in the matrix and Oasis
we should all go out and enjoy life to
the fullest at human being let’s enjoy
adventure go for dance enjoy the arts
travel be what we human are supposed to
be nothing can replace our face-to-face
interaction that we human need be a good
friend and enjoy a wonderful time to oil
friends in person come down and attend
the technologies socialize with each
other
Simon Cowell he says that he had not
used his headphone for the past 10
months and he says that he is so good
for his human he’s meant to help you see
now it’s so much more happier so much
more focus in his work can you imagine
no phone no laptop no gadgets no internet no technology freedom thank you
