Do it Your way! | Garima Avtar | TEDxShivNadarUniversity

being a small-town girl from Brady
I never imagined becoming a rally driver
even though as a child I prefer playing
with cars rather their doors I was
always passionate about driving ever
since my dad taught me at a young age of
14
this had created a strong sense of
independence in me I still remember
sometimes just too sure I would drive a
load and pattered view to school and had
become accustomed to the gaping
reactions of the schoolmates as I would
drive in pull the gear down park at the
driveway and switch off the ignition it
was end poverty to see released but in
Brady tradition route
my parrot decided to get me married to a
stranger when I was just 18
it was not my choice not in my character
I had been a performer and house captain
in my school and my only burning
ambition then was to finish my studies
join the Foreign Services and become an
ambassador for my country the last thing
I wanted to do was to get married and I
had completely no say in this decision
the marriage turned out to be pretty
dorky and turbulent I had never felt
more betrayed in my life if I had stayed
on I would have lost every ounce of my
self-respect
unfortunately my pillow my only source
of strength my father was no more I
didn’t know whom to look up to for help
I felt completely lost in this time of
distress some of the places were
hesitant to help while some other
godsend people would buy me like a dog
and I’m eternally grateful to them with
no professional degree and no financial
independence the president of the future
debate an uncertain nightmare at that
moment the idea of walking alone into
the unknown with countless challenges
was truly intimidating I had two options
one I would have said looting at home
and said God why me and the other was to
take charge of my life and do it my way
I chose the latter I am NOT alive then
we
even options and we make her choices
venomoth take complete responsibility
for the outcome of the choice and be
eternally positive about it and
eventually hold o regrets
so when I decided to walk out of the
marriage I have no guilt no regrets
because I had taught my own part and I
did it my way
pass over to five years my first rally
happened out of the blue when I saw an
ad on Facebook about a woman’s car rally
in 2011 so a friend and I decided to
participate in it little did I know that
what started as fun participation would
become my colleague and career yet for
all the thrill and excitement of getting
into Motorsports I had a lot of
apprehension because it was a completely
unexplored territory for me nobody from
ice and your friends is remotely
associated with rally road racing in
most cases people have their paths laid
out for them by others but in my case
there was no clear path or a role model
guiding me but real inspiration growth
comes from stepping away from what’s
comfortable and familiar and stepping
out into the unknown if only we could
sum up the courage and are willing to
take risk Motorsports is not a that self
financing curve and our stand alone
profession in fact it can burn a hole in
your pocket after divorce ow
when I took up a job in a manufacturing
company there Tim Cape is limited or
which are the vice-president down I had
become financially independent but
definitely it wasn’t enough to pursue
such an expensive sport so inevitably
questions arose as to why I would want
to trade my saved cushioned existence
for something so unpredictable also how
would I balance my life between my
responsibilities there’s a mother a
full-time job and a newfound passion but
I was consumed by this passion we all
want to live a life we love alive that
feel uniquely our own and feels right to
us sometimes car
own part in life isn’t easy especially
the path the balls breaking from the
norm but if you trust yourself and keep
carving your part one step at a time and
keep walking you will get there so I
started to work hard to hold my driving
skills invested in professional training
followed on extremely strict and
well-planned fitness regime I could
visit garages after work and pick up on
the knowledge and fundamentals of cars
and rallying from books and other
sources I could lay my hands on I also
started working earnestly to work
getting sponsorship which is never easy
finally my first big break happened when
highly competitive Mahindra took me on
board as one of the drivers for the time
speed distance for my dragons this was
the beginning of intensive racing action
which were my laurels in many rallies
and by 2013 I had made my mark in the
rally circuit but I have learned that
success lies beyond our comfort zone you
have to be willing to go where many fear
to tread and you have to do it your way
so now my heart was all said to venture
out into the more challenging extreme of
high speed rally which was the real
stuff where the cars grit and skills of
the rally driver were truly tested this
was the glass ceiling in front of me
which I had to soon great Motorsports
has also given me some of my life’s most
memorable moments and one of the women
car rallies my first rally by navigator
and I we got lost at the middle of
nowhere it was a time free distance from
a trolley in every second wasted losing
away could cost us a final podium
position so we did the only thing mature
people do when to such dire
circumstances we argued we quartered
as I said a few harsh words to her about
her knowledge of basic navigation and
she was equally complimentary about my
lack of driving skills we did reach back
and finish the rally and share a hearty
laugh over
predicament when we stood second
runner-up on the podium today she is one
of my closest friends on the rally
circuit so sometimes it is necessary to
get lost in order to find one’s way back
motor sports is a male-dominated sport
in one of the Desert Storm gravies
amongst the 150 participants I was the
only female driver either triple my way
through the hot sand dunes of Jezebel
so as women we not only have to prove
ourselves in the racetrack but also have
to fight through numerous stereotypes
but this has never dissipated me in fact
it made my resolve even stronger very
often when I introduced myself as a
rally driver people want down and their
reaction is really you look so delicate
how come you are into motorsports well I
am standing right here in front of you
the truth is in motorsports mental
strength matters more than the physical
strength once in one of the rounds of
the Indian National Rally Championship
which is an extreme form at rally on a
gravel track as I was negotiating a shop
slippery corner at high speed my car
went off the track and turned turtle
this did not dampen my spirits without
wasting much time I navigated and I with
the help of some passers-by got the car
back on the track and finish the rally
and even won in our category so I have
come far down the road less traveled
finally some fruits of my journey have
been realized I have been an instructor
for Porsche a and one of the
professional drivers for Mercedes for
the links drive program I had launched
in all the men’s del Drive expeditions
for a travel company where we are all
women drove to spiti valley which is
home to the world’s most treacherous
roads currently I’m part of team auto
car which is into his leading
automatically then Auto Show on times
now my recent project took took me to
cover
Reba Malia’s which is the was highest
altitude that one of the most
granny’s somewhere while driving on
those back roads and the rocky terrains
I’ve also taken my personal
transformational journey and I’ve
evolved from being submissive to be more
resolute and assertive from certain
dividend to boost confidence and may I
even say from a victim to a victim
because I did it my way I had continued
on my journey of Motorsports not only
because I am passionate about cars and
driving but also because I wanted to
test my mettle and to create my own
identity which I’d lost somewhere down
the line finally I found my place under
the Sun but the journey continues and
the dream only gets bigger so keep
creating a life which is uniquely your
own carve your path one step at a time
in pursuit of a dream do it your way and
in saying this I am inspired by and
would like to share this wonderful
rendition conducted by Zubin Mehta in
tribute to Frank Sinatra this video
resonates my sentiments
