Diversity- Making the World Go ‘Round | Alexander Kerr | TEDxWoodbridgeHigh

[Applause]
hi Wow lights hi um I’m Alex and first
off I think I’d like to prove a point
here so this is the third speech I wrote
out of seven that I wrote for this to
try and prepare for the words I was
going to say and you know what I was
really like wow I’m nervous
okay so to prove my point I will take
this speech and I will do this and I’m
doing that because my point is that I am
different than who I was when I wrote
that speech you know I can understand
those words and I can say them better
than I could when I wrote that speech so
with that other way you know growing up
I didn’t always have what I wanted you
know I didn’t always have the cool toys
I didn’t always have the things that
those kids over there had I was like oh
wow that’s really cool you know I didn’t
have a scooter I didn’t learn to ride a
bike Wow
think till I was nine so yeah late on
that but um you know I’ve lost a lot of
people and I recently just kind of got
out of this really low point in my life
and I shut everything out you know I
would come to school and I would wear
this fake smile allow to act like
everything’s okay when really it wasn’t
you know um about a year and a half ago
I lost my grandfather you know my
grandmother she’s this great person I
have this memory of her when I just
walked in the house in Ohio and she had
hurt her foot she was in cast she wasn’t
opposed to walk on it and I walk in the
house and she immediately starts trying
to get up it was like hey Alex do you
want anything to eat you need anything
to eat and I was I mean like oh grandma
sit down sit down and that just showed
to me her character as a person so we
lost my grandfather and I had been
asking myself a question for a long time
and that was why me why did I can
losing people why could I not have
something stable in my life because it
seemed to me that everyone I started to
care about was leaving my grandfather he
passed away about a year and a half ago
as I said eighth grade that hit me
really hard
prior to that third grade I met my
great-grandmother once and then she
passed away soon after uhm then in sixth
grade my cat died
and as I wasn’t even there for I didn’t
even get to see her after I had moved
out to California and that was it was
really tough for me so I just kind of
got out of this low point and my point
in saying this my point in telling you
all of this is that we are different
each one of you here is taking these
words that I’m speaking right now today
and interpreting them a different way
each one of you has your own unique
brain that thinks in your own unique
ways and that’s amazing you know and so
my answer to that question why me is why
anything because each one of us has
different experiences each one of us
experience different things we each have
our own tough times that we have to go
through to become the people that we are
and I wouldn’t trade what I’ve
experienced for anything because had I
not experienced that had I not had to go
through that all the tears all the
crying all of the moments where I wasn’t
really sure of myself then I would not
be the person I am here speaking to you
all today and I would not be loving
every second of it so ultimately my
point is that I guess it can be summed
up in a quote from my friend is saying
some people have it worse so don’t cry
is like saying some people have it
better so you can’t be happy you know we
all go through our own different
experiences we all are our own different
people and that’s what makes the world
amazing if
have Democrats and Republicans and
libertarians then what would our
political system look like if we were
all the same what do we even have
friends or would we just hate ourselves
because everywhere we looked we saw our
own reflection so I’ve been dealing with
this and I know if any of you have heard
of him at Tony Robbins I watched his
documentary I am NOT your guru and I
found that really just inspiring one of
the main reasons I came up here and
talked today so if I leave you with
nothing I want to leave you with this I
want to leave you with the idea that
because you are different you are
special because you were different you
don’t mean anything less than anyone
else you don’t need to fit in you don’t
need to be the same as someone else or
have the same hairstyle or the same
clothes in order to be amazing and be
yourself because ultimately diversity is
what makes us us it is what makes the
world revolve in a matter of Oracle way
of speaking of course we all know that’s
gravity but it is what makes the world
the world it is what makes us us and
ultimately when we sit down after a long
day maybe get a glass eliminate or
something who knows we should think
about how amazing each one of us are how
amazingly selves are each one of our
selves are and how amazing we are as a
species to have come so far where
everyone is different and everyone has
their own opinion so if I leave you with
nothing today I want to leave you with
the fact that diversity is what makes
the world go round and diversity is the
thing that makes us us and each one of
you out there is amazing each one of you
out there is handsome and beautiful and
each one of you out there is you and no
one else
