“DEAD VIRUS”: Turning Youth into Leaders | Kanchan Jha | TEDxBirgunj

[Music]
namaste everyone and just to issue a
general notice I’m not here to set up
any fire but yes I look to talk about
some certain issues which we all know
that there’s nothing new about it and
I’m not going to say anything that is
inspirational actually it gives me great
pleasure to meet you all this afternoon
and I’m really grateful to the
organizers for giving me this lovely
opportunity today friends I feel that
the human body I was a bit party truly
an amazing thing it has always
fascinated me since the day I am I was
born it takes you food seven seconds to
get from your mouth to your stomach with
high bones are stronger the country
similarly the average man’s private area
is three times the length of his prom oh
man heart beats faster than a man and I
think that’s the reason why women are so
capable of loving three kilograms of
weight on him
before I pick it I hope you would like
to request you take a deep breath the
street the sacred deep breath and just
tell yourselves how much you love
yourselves you know we never say how
much we love ourselves we always tell
other people how much we love them how
much we miss them ourselves how much we
love ourselves to be first yourself
useful
and about my fascination with towards
youth and in fixes a lot the word
infectious even in the type of viruses
that pokemons we’re suing a scale of the
world infectious laughter is infectious
passion is contagious love is credible
and chains is communicable but you can
see on the screen is just a small word
all infectious but let me remind you
over the decade
we’re in committing ourselves such
furthermore infectious as I was growing
up my pet mother
my beloved my mother down to party she
would come play with me and tell me
stories about the time she was young and
so food could play the world is he or
she could play in the world suicide and
a very quite woman very Tennyson always
fascinated about it believes always
fascinated about Ramos’s I remember the
twinkle in her eyes when she would come
to me look at me and tell me oh boy I
believe you could become a leader unless
you come a little less naughty I never
figure out what it takes to become a
little less naughty
it was only in 2006 upon my graduation
and upon my return to the bar I figured
it out and I slowly understood it was
about less naughty commits leadership it
was about breaking the barrier and
infecting the people around you with
positive actions induce positive change
as well as transform the lives of many
vulnerable and
these beauties it’s about bringing
people together for a common and saved
vision for a common part for a common
home and for a common dream for the
first time in my life I wanted to become
infectious I wanted to inspect people
around me I wanted to protect all so
let’s not be scared of this world
infectious it was then we found a
samaveda in 2006 in English it means a
little step so this was our little step
to be infected and in fact the more
around us named for the idea that we
talking to six other step to serve one’s
community and he disdains the
organisation was founded by a group of
Mancini more completely and dynamic
youth who’s not instead and causing that
barrier who’d do something for the
committee where we were born and for the
committee reveal of and for our beloved
land believe me it has been a remarkable
a long journey of infecting people and
empowering better opportunities to
reduce poverty and injustice in
communities they’re happy associated
from this country’s life the life of the
nation over the decade we have committed
ourselves to define the development
sector of the path by taking a bottom-up
approach to include inclusive and
sustainable Community Development and so
there are remarkable stories from among
people people present here and the
speakers that are gonna say their
stories after me
I’m sure you guys have a remarkable
stories but for me for us what is
infectious about all of us is that very
affected by what we call a dead virus
there is a tournament that we present
you a simple philosophy
but it has been a backbone of siloam
island we have something about which we
call internet virus but spud is simple
but powerful
it stands for D which is dignity eat for
economic power me a for everything and D
for determination believe me we have
been within ourselves but just like
other vaccinations we just need a
booster dose to start it working my
booster doses of a virus we have been
able to inspire human complicated
problems ignored by the government the
private sector the security sector with
local solutions ensuring equity and
sustainability we have a diverse range
of programs and through this
it fires we simply do three things one
we make them away so that they can feel
that means not only see the taste but
feel change at the same time we enable
them so that we can eat meat and thirdly
we empower them so that they can be but
is that they have gone through so to see
the simple philosophy of Sano pyrrha
my booster doses of this virus were able
to do what we are able to do we diverse
range of programs and s0 here each of
the programs has local bread in his
local feeds and local ownership
targeted to improve the lives of
vulnerable people our focus areas span
from using parliament to travel
application to crime prevention and
information anti trafficking and site
protection health services and
improvement and access to age
including peacebuilding likelihood
enhancement and of course the prices
response we were only having visiting to
me to empowerment efforts and through
our programs we have focused primarily
on youth recognizing the high levels of
marginal IDs and then victimization of
youth who are also often the
perpetrators of crime and violence over
at equip we have reached over thousands
of youth and Tracy and have to help them
some means their personal behavior
interpersonal behavior and have made
them good through various social changes
so far we have contributed and transform
the lives of youth affected by drugs and
crimes over 1,500 young men who have
been affected by drugs and crime habit
rehabilitated through our efforts we
don’t treat is it trouble getting people
involved in drugs and crimes as
criminals but what we do is we seek to
reform their behavior and turn them into
leaders that’s how we infect them with
one I sold you a virus it isn’t about
let me say some remarkable stories as I
said I did see some stories some stories
that you might find it special but these
are some simple we had powerful stories
of this young man when such as transport
themselves when a transforming the
communities belong to this part of a day
formerly known as Odyssey whose name was
synonymous to tell all over by reason of
the bath over a thousand pieces
including homicide homicide attempt
explosive extortion and intimidation
were against registered against him and
the local police and I see he fought for
the Maoists for the first four years
during the insurgency and then for the
speeder a girl groups who tricked him
into six
you know this is for the liberation of
police this is for the liberation of the
people became a symbol of terror and
threat for the general public
this despaired security personnel during
his game of cat-and-mouse with the
police who sought three times and
sustained bullet injuries in 2007 he got
convicted of various crimes and was sent
to prison it was released last year and
then has been a main foundation of our
programs in the community who would have
imagined a person who could turn into a
leading social activities visit and
insert it was turning to a piece paper
let me show you another remarkable show
here he says he thought my name when I
system’s first started using drugs used
to think that he was on the forefront of
an adventurous risky way of life that
most dull boring boys of his age in half
he spent his youthful years in pursuit
of drugs and the use of 19 he had his
first run-in with crime now this 26 year
old
is at the Bundy lisa-marie habitation
and crime prevention program with
Wiggins and he helps other empowered
helps other affected youth to be
empowered in Chains not only themselves
but they mobilize themselves to change
others as well let me remind you again
that these were the volunteers when the
2015 earthquake struck our beloved
country we have mobilized around three
to four hundred of these monitors went
in rehabilitated from the background of
crime and drugs and they were the ones
waited through eleven districts of the
affected area and provided support to
15,000 families
our first response similarly in Kota we
have took over the community and we are
working with the committee with these
youths well not only building shelters
but also enhancing livelihood
opportunities in a very remote location
in perkupp but we need to do many of
these young men have been treated as
criminals and as level has been leveled
as pariahs of our societies sometimes my
own society and sometimes by their own
friends and families in a way have been
dehumanized because they had problems
with drugs and committed petty crimes
found him a place to our inhabitation
centres known as school of recovery and
information we not only happy take
youths like Paju and Adam but also help
them envision themselves as positive
contributors to their own community now
let me go a little bit 12 other sectors
that we are approaching and that we are
tracing this is partially we rescued her
in 2013 and since then she has been on
the rehabilitation the name partly comes
from slang because she was found near
the road in Sabah Lee I find out she was
naked and she was actually dumped in a
garbage a volunteer site and responded
well collaboration with one of the
donors at that point but those donors
guidelines didn’t allow us to take its
like much lead to our centre we stopped
the car sale one of the philosophies
that we have maintained is that the
local needs of the committee should be
in priority of all our partners and
donors were supporting us similarly sees
as the photo when she was picked up from
the garbage ambient saveliy Avenue in
2013 and that’s partly she is now
learning basic life skills in our sector
and now she is one of the entertainers
among the other kids if you take you to
another person here
his name is Sahar he attains the name
he’s a trafficking survivor and SAS
doesn’t have any parents he was rescued
from a children’s home in f1 who will to
live homes like those were using it’s
nice to you
foreign donors foreign donations a lot
of money it is children like party and
Sahar’s
that is our priority AHA’s now stays and
so happy to now have a good education
also like having clean healthy food
three because I didn’t have this before
oh God eighty-nine percent is it reaches
recent exams and he loves to play
football and one of these aim is to
serve the nation in the coming future
friends our unique foster care model for
the kids are usually for actives and
orphan kids who do not have a parents
but most of the time when we receive it
we find out that they have parents back
home so what we do is we have a great
integration program in the far west of
the country hoola Hollywood Joomla Mugu
and other places like birth via in the
driver we did we ask you this student we
go back to the parents we work with them
we make them accept the parents because
we believe that every child in this
country has the right to grow up with
the parents education and food should
not be a problem to these children just
do because of these two factors this
wouldn’t be separated from their parents
last but not the least let me show you
one unique initiative called Milan
jewelry which is based in Kathmandu this
is an especially city of Sanaa pyla that
specializes in handcraft children it’s
Social Venture setup that we are
progressing to do each piece crafted
here that you see is crafted by skilled
swearers were deaf and mute or survivors
of trafficking in 2002
I used to miss two children from
services in India in that during that
period we dispute hundreds of girls was
sold by their own families in two
surfaces of India in those circuses
these kids will be treated the same as
they were being treated as the animals
in the sense that were being fed the
same food but the animals were being fed
do be performing and twin 20 24 hours
seven hours seven days a week
and during the night time where the
girls would get laid all sent they would
be sent to various powerful people
politicians bureaucrats to spend the
night away this was a story of the
people who are now behind the man in
jewelry we believe that it’s providing
identity to people who have been victims
of social evils and the only way to make
them in power is the economic
empowerment the way they can take
financial decisions on their own I think
that’s real empowerment Sano pilot
believes that’s really powering a small
video about our humanity really
initiative and again let me tell you he
said the people who saw in the surfaces
in India fears back but now they have
redefined themselves they have redefined
their home and they’re building their
new dreams to build the dream not for
themselves but also for the country so
the idea is that a sorry pass suelen
dictate the future of these survivors so
based on that idea we are providing them
with economic opportunities so that they
can take their own decisions in the
coming future
we feel that develop a suit itself be a
movement a movement by the people for
the people and to the people I think
that’s what development needs to be
redefined as however we also believe
that the protection of human rights
access to jobs and education and
development of beautifully
we’ll be able to me to bring social
economic and political change in this
country
however for Nepal it is a small country
and it is one of those countries where
most people survives with an income of
less than a dollar a day in such a
country with poverty and literacy
illiteracy screaming from every rooftop
we dudes like us like you we have to
take to come out of our closets and take
charge
let’s get infected and let’s get
infected with that virus that I showed
you earlier we have that ability and the
privilege coughing more chains today
what our fathers and forefathers had
they in their lifetimes so ask
yourselves what you wanna do with it
what you want to go in that privilege
how you want to build your community how
you wanna pick your word and how you
want to be yourself failures and
frustrations will be there but it’s not
about how hard you hit it’s about how
you can get in it and still stand up and
keep on going it’s not about the numbers
of bread the course of breads you play
it’s about the moments that takes your
breath away
let me see you one final old-english
perform actually two sanskrit proverb
then i’m translating in English it means
it says when we were born we cry and the
world celebrates if you like in such a
way that when you die the world will cry
and you rejoice
and as always stay not stay be studious
and go out and infect the world
thank you
[Applause]
