Culture Vulture: Who paints our Art culture?  | Pauly Ramirez Parra | TEDxChicagoWomen

[Applause]
so this all started when my friend asked
me a question
what part of Asia are you from and I
replied I’m in a Mexican part and it was
oh really where is that at
and I’m like you know between North
America and Central America and that got
me thinking Americans aren’t really used
to diverse people like me you know
people that look kind of Asian kind of
Russian kinda Italian I got in a little
bit of everything except Mexico and then
I realized that there’s other people
that look like me you know that look
likely ambiguous and I started doing
research on it it’s like alright there
must be other people like me and what
I’ve discovered was the National
Geographic for 125 anniversary did what
the future American will look like and
in 2015 they will look a lot like that
so by the time 2015 gets here I got
really excited I started imagining
things
you know how someone a person of color
will be able to not think of the race
when they apply for a job or how they
can go to the museum and see how the
past affected them and that struck me
what of a person of color what are they
gonna see in a museum
so for view guys who kind of go to the
museum but really don’t good I’m using
i’m gonna cut wondering why is it there
like I never go there so museums are a
great place where you go there and look
at the past our historians keep specific
pieces not just because they look cool
but because their statement piece it’s a
way for us to cattle at the pass I
remember what was going on in that
specific place because picture is worth
a thousand words
and then it got me going this amazing
let’s say she’s 10 go to museum what are
they gonna find in 2017 80% of artists
top galleries in New York are white and
I was like wait a minute
that’s all wrong where are people that
look like me where the artists that look
like me
so artwork is a way to catalog the pass
currently right now in the tech world
there’s a lot of initiatives to bring
diversity and inclusion but in the art
world it’s not even like someone’s
speaking about it there’s not a lot of
people making actions and all the
government approval or galleries doing
something about it and you’re wondering
why does this matter
so let’s go back to Egypt ancient times
archeologists were able to look at the
artwork and be able to figure out what
they were doing their traditions what
they were eating who were they following
like basically Instagram and if we
didn’t have that there we would probably
never what I’m able to enjoy their
culture like we do now another great
pieces of art were booby are you sure
you’ve seen this somewhere and the
museum you visit though AIC Cosimo de
Medici was someone as a banker who loved
commissioning artwork and he thought
that the artwork was a way for us to get
closer to God but in his way to getting
closer to God he forgot about the
average person the only thing he was
able to remember for us is how great it
was and how great it was to be rich but
if you were poor that’s basically it
like you won’t be remember so that’s not
great right so how do we change that
how do we go from a very inaccurate 2017
catalog to a better catalog for 2018
because remember 2015 will be different
we just start thinking about who is
going to remember black lives matter
dreamers and women rights who is going
to remember this and we do this by
remembering today for tomorrow and that
sounds really cool right I just thought
it was a really cool thing to say right
that’s that’s it but no no I got a
solution I thought about this so
galeries if you think about it are the
people that currently keep what the
culture is gonna look like for the
future but galleries is the main reason
why people like me get forgotten so we
need to get galleries to start thinking
about the rest of us by creating nishan
it’s making sure that everybody is
equally represented making sure that no
matter where you come from you can be in
their space so some of you might not
know what is how difficult it is to get
a gallery or into a gallery so example
if I want to be an artist and want to be
the top gallery in Chicago I need to go
to the school of the Art Institute of
Chicago which is 50k roughly a semester
and not only is that good enough I need
to have the right connections so even if
I do pay 50k I might even get to get
into the gallery because I don’t have
the right connections or come from the
right family which completely unfair so
once we’re being like to that galleries
need to take action and make it better
for us to represent our culture the next
one involves all of you guys so I’m
pretty sure all of you have like
something that you’re super passionate
about you’re super passionate about
women’s rights passionate about the
black lives matter
passion about dreamers this is really
cool things happening right now
what are we great for you to look for an
artist and Commission them or go to a
woman made gallery which is talking
exactly about that and making sure you
get the artist best represents you so he
could be remembered tomorrow I did my
part so this shirt that I’m wearing is
commissioned by one of my favorite
artists she’s an amazing designer and
this is freedom this is a t-shirt of
freedom so talk to me later I’ll explain
it later
but all you guys ok the last one is you
kind of have to know a little bit about
me so I graduated from the School of the
unti of Chicago and I was super
passionate about making sure arteries
cutting into galleries or that paid
ending the starving artist syndrome so I
created a platform that matched people
like you with upcoming artists and
getting custom artwork for a nicer
better price rather than you spending
$500 in IKEA and getting something that
gets made in 10 seconds which it’s great
but what about me right and then I
realized I’m super passionate about
discrimination and this is a three layer
problem and I need a three layer
solution how do I do this which is
something that I’m currently working
right now so it says block chaining
machine learning but don’t worry I’ll
explain it really quickly blockchain
just for this purpose just imagine a
huge slit ledger that keeps everything
safe and secure like Excel document
that’s all you need to know all right
and for me nur is playing this tech is
think about building a house so on the
first picture you see as foundation
currently the art world lacks a strong
foundation they make sure that people in
this little section can remember but all
of you guys get forgotten
so my curator and strong foundation I’ll
be able to bring everyone together as a
whole and ensure that everyone is
remembered tomorrow the second part
that’s we’re blocking away
blockchain so it may level your house
you want to keep everything there and
secure and save so if you have a really
expensive laptop
no one’s gonna steal it right same thing
in the art world as an artist I want to
make sure that my artwork is like
information is kept saved so what is
this artwork information on you want to
keep safe let’s say I sell you a piece
for $100 okay you just got a piece an
original poly piece for $100
later on I go out to be an amazing
artist and I sell my pieces for $4,000
and you’re like oh that’s really cool
I’m a business person so I bought you a
piece for 100 bucks I’m gonna sell it to
your friend over there for like I don’t
know 400 percent plus and I’m gonna hear
like cool like where’s my piece as an
artist there’s nothing for me to get
royalty so now they’ll be able to do so
and then the last piece will be solar
panels there’s a lot of information
going around as artists but we don’t
always know so artists over there might
know something that I need but I won’t
know about it so we’ve constantly be
gathering information and as a solar
panel will be powering up the house so I
know what it sets on a really cool
blockchain and machine learning but the
one thing is that technology it’s
forever evolving and changing that I
think this technology is similar to the
invention of perspective perspective may
ensure that artists were able to create
from a 3d roll into a 2d space and
they’re able to create photographic
images the same thing with blocking an
AI they’ll be able to see the world and
experience a world without thinking much
of the future and this piece right here
is maybe one of my friends Sam Kirk she
works a lot in color and I want sure to
take away something just one thing art
is for everyone and art is
in color thank you [Applause]
