very good morning I am Sofia I want
share a series
stories and photo projects was
developed in recent years
the interesting thing about these four projects
because at the beginning
They seemed different projects with
different communities in places
different from the world for this talk I
I realized that all those projects
had had a very clear
invention this principle
and
in the first project that I’m going to
project does not waste it and pulls everything
is with the university for that
project and unlocks the theme of the
home
ah
and really I knew that I was going to
find because there are many things that do not
it had been two minutes when
they were suddenly heard to come down
[Music]
out of topic
Y
instantaneously with old people I started to
speak in these considerations and account
that I wanted to make a project of them
because all these women that you are
the first day that I started talking and
share with them they left more about
of what it was to be Dominican that I
up to that point I had not known
those were the ones that I
1
and in two minutes known balls
and each one of those ways really
had a past history donors all
with reason for having been to that already
spent more years and me what they continued
It was never the photo you can accept
know can I make these people their
stories and it was election that you’re
women were not only connect let’s go
and how we would do so much culturally but
all of a sudden their lives got involved
well their stories this I realized
that in most cases their
Realities
and for something that was difficult to process
for the next project that I
I developed
I did it in Australia everything and this has
been a university exchange
and I finished a cultural exchange
but not with family and family
let’s get to your culture it’s not convenient
that with my hands with them in really
it was again an experience that is not
it was about the photo it was about sharing
and learn from that other culture
It was much more
[Music]
to learn and I put
through the pictures that gave me
permission
[Music]
this was the family that was like that and this
It was the picture that I
his store that was a store
It was the process
between them
head
because
in this project
like all those Dominicans
where
absolutely nothing because there is no longer
that
to the head only if I had to
deal with certain things for their religion
for its culture for the country
I know a lot about that situation and one day I
I was telling a friend
and he
I want to meet these people not
only it was not because of the fact that
they were snipers and that was a
war or nothing will be able to see that other
side of the coin that is to speak with
people who had been in that
situation that in some way or another
displaced so many people from that
culture that I briefly met there
two interesting things happened
I was they lived in another city
we drive eight hours to spend a
time with them
and since 20 I realized that I was
creating images of my head of how it
I saw a soldier
one of those on all sides that is the
television of the news and really that
was
that was prejudice that was all that
I had previously said that not while
they were telling you the stories of
the war they showed you scars where
between a bullet
in an area of the house where suddenly
there were all the things that they had
brought from that time in afghanistan and
when they tell you this about euphoria and that
adrenaline that gives you and they say there is no
nothing like that with a face like I think
your conversations are not very real
and one is created as true or
ok that person and so on like this and of
suddenly then I ended up in the yard with
they and you see normal people
people like you like me where
each person has his past his history
have different circumstances because
they ended up in those situations and that
very interesting that I found while
I shared with them was that they gave me
the opportunity to see a bone a disc
hard practically full of images that
they had done while they were
in afghanistan and all those images was
as
they give me permission to see that they
they had lived had they had video had
photos of different thing because in the end
of the day that is the photograph or the
photography is a reflection of what you
you are interested
and be able to see where they stopped at that
at that moment so
or is it so difficult and so stressful already
that they paid and they threw photos
for me was it was very funny bone
and see how that reflected his personality
and when one was talking to them
after
my time in australia I finished
coming back here and during those
vacation I spent most of
my time in prison for victory and
the victory is a very complex place or
be that place really deserves a shock
alone
but it is
a neighborhood between walls that is
where one considers all
social problems of this country or
be it corruption prostitution
the drug the flow of money the elitism
racism all and further intensified
by the fact that it is between walls or
it was a situation that now when
already presented the images you are going to
see that it really does not look like a prison and
that was to be my point has never been like
you see a jail like it looks
a soldier that is simply
that me in that situation like I am
reacting to them and how they
they react to me and it’s about that
everydayness in that space and what
interesting about the victory was also
the fact that
it was a community like all
others that I had done but in a
Dominican community in republic
Dominican but as you wish it was not a
normal circumstance were people who
had a clear physical delimitation and
socially so that there was like that
that barrier that one had to cross
to to be able to enter his a
your world or your reality
[Applause]
the thing of the whole project what
was that I always always came
unconsciously dealing with not
only minorities but people who
they had they were in different
circumstances and it was pretty much
empathize with these people by the
fact that I as a Dominican in some
moment was searched then really
for me it has always been very
difficult I already know how to say that I am
photographer much more difficult to say that I
I am an artist or visual artist
because I really believe that I
I’m just a curious person and
that curiosity has led me to connect
with these people and find out
they and they help me discover
things about me and this whole process makes us
more tolerant person
tolerance makes us better people
Thank you
